In the US we really do have what we would call scary "backwoods" people so the story is perhaps not as symbolic or farfetched as you might think. The film sort of feels like Tobe Hooper took something real and exaggerated it, which is not uncommon in good drama. Especially the manner in which the family of maniacs is portrayed. And this film clearly inspired The Devil's Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses (both great films). Great review.
I never knew that was a thing, it's a crazy world out there 😂 I guess that adds an extra touch of horror to it, as it's something that could actually happen! And honestly, I consider House of 1000 Corpses near enough a remake haha! Glad you enjoyed the review!
@@ARealHorrorShowIt's not really a thing lol. People in the "backwoods" are no crazier than anyone else in New York City. Honestly, the big cities are more fucked up than the country. Ive lived in the rural south my whole life and Ill tell you that you're 100% more likely to meet someone in the "backwoods" that will help you rather than hurt you lol.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A film Rex Reed called the most horrifying movies he's ever seen. I loved the style of this film, the visuals are amazing. It almost has a documentary type of look. One of the most iconic scenes has to be when Leatherface kills Franklin with the chainsaw. Seeing Leatherface come down on him as he's in the wheelchair and Sally running for her life is truly horrifying and the amazing part is they didn't need any blood or gore. I was lucky enough to get Gunnar Hansen's autograph when he did a convention up here in New York City. He was the nicest guy you could ever meet. He was telling me that all of the actors who worked on the movie got paid very little money. The people who bank-rolled the movie allegedly had some criminal ties, so a lot of the money the movie made disappeared. Gunnar told me he made 47 dollars from that film. He said he would've made more money working at McDonalds. It was also hot as Hell, as you mentioned. Gunnar only had one outfit and they wouldn't let him wash it, because they were afraid it would either shrink or fade. So, the clothes Gunnar wore stunk to high Heaven. They also had to film the night scenes in the daytime, so the windows had to be closed and have black tape over them. Ed Neal(The Hitchhiker) said someone had an idea to put a cooked chicken on the table. The problem is that is was so hot, the chicken de-composed quickly and it stunk up the place! Ed Neal said the looks on his face wasn't great acting. He couldn't stand the smell. Tobe Hooper also directed Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Gunnar didn't come back because the studio felt his price was too high. Personally, after what he got paid in the first film, I don't blame him for upping his price. The sequel is a cult favorite. Tobe said that he didn't think he could match the intensity of his first film, so he brought a little humor into the sequel. If you haven't seen it, give it a watch. The other sequels weren't too memorable. The 2003 re-make with Jessica Biel and R. Lee Ermey was really good though. I rank it right up there with the original. The 2022 re-boot. I'm not even going to mention that one. I wish Tobe was still around, so he could see how popular and iconic his film still is today. They've made several sequels and re-boots and the even got a video game about it. I will definitely raise a glass of Guinness to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the actors, and everybody who helped make it happen!! Great video!! Keep them coming!!!
Unfortunately I never got the chance to meet Gunnar, both him and Tobe Hooper did various conventions over here in England but this was before I started to attend them! I've only ever heard great things about Gunnar though and how nice he was. The conditions that they had to film this movie in were just absurd, they all deserved a medal for it! I've seen the sequels, the second in particular I've seen many times and had the fortune of meeting Bill Moseley who played Chop Top and I have a figure signed by him in my collection! (If you haven't seen my horror collection room videos, I highly recommend checking them out!) The 2003 is a great adaptation of this classic, but yeah, we don't speak of last year's film 😂
I won't be able to cover that film within this series but it's a film I could definitely do a review of in the future for sure! And thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
