The Honda CT-90, also known as the trail 90, was manufactured from 1966 to 1979 and was commonly regarded as the best motorcycle ever made. It featured an 89cc 4 stroke air cooled motor. The motorcycle has a dry weight of 179 pounds and featured a step through style frame with a low center of gravity. The bike was marketed for the farm, ranch or any outdoor activity that required a do all machine. Owners loved this bike for it's versatility and ease of use and is still very sought after to this day. There are rumors that Honda will be introducing a modern version of the bike in 2021 in the form of a Honda CT-125. Although, if you are interested in a bike with the same great attributes as the Honda but want to explore electric technology, look no further than the UBCO 2x2.
The UBCO 2x2 carries a lot of the same attributes that the Honda had. It's lightweight at 144 pounds, has a low center of gravity and is very easy to ride. Where it is most different, is the electric motors that power the bike. The UBCO 2x2 features dual electric 1 kW hub drive motors that give the bike plenty of traction and because it has no chain or sprockets, it keeps the bike whisper quiet.

Brings back memories. My dad bought this for my mother. The first time she rode it she fell over and skinned her knee. She didn't want to ride it after that and so me and my three brother inherited the Trail 90. It was the same as CT-90 but had a split transmission. Low range for woods and high for highway. I rode the bike hard on the woods trails and up some pretty awesome hills. I used it when I got my learner's permit but before I had my driver's license. I took my youngest brother to see Jaws in the theater on the back of that Honda 90.

Its a brilliant bike, easy to use, cheap to run (the only cost in 2 years has been 1 set of brake pads and charging ). Very easy to transport on towbar rack. Its fantastic in town, amazing in the wild and easy to attach tools and gear to for work. Most of all it is fun to ride and I have to say well done the UBCO team in New Zealand.

Great review and yes you nailed it with the comparison. The CT 90 was the first motorbike I rode. So easy to learn on. Twist the throttle n go. We can still get the CT110 here in NZ. The same place the UBCO was developed and built. Good old Kiwi ingenuity.

@Cam Dunnage Thanks Cam! That's awesome man, such a cool bike to learn on and jealous you can still get the 110 as well as the UBCO. Great to have options. NZ seems like a badass country!

My first dirt bike was a Honda 90, but not this CT 90. It was basically a 90CC scooter that we threw a knobby tire on the back. We rode the hedoubleLL out of that thing! We kept the road tire on the front, but we rode it like that anyway. It was all we could get our hands on. That bike lasted through 3 boys and a girl for probably 10 years before Daddy finally sold it, still running, and got us a Honda 125 dirt bike.

Look at all that storage 👀!!!! And you can lay the ubco down into a car trunk or crowded pickup, you won't need worry about gas pouring out of carburetor. 👍

Funny because I converted a CT90 to electric back in the 90's. I upgraded it to Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries. & an E-tek motor.capable of 65 mph . Just dissembled it and parted it out a few months ago. I quit riding it when I bought my Zero MX.

@@lostinspace280 yeah if you read what I said I converted it back in the 90s and later upgraded it to lithium ion phosphate batteries. Original conversion was done with AGM

In Australia those Honda CT 'S are used by Australia Post and their contractors. No clutch so you ride with your right and stuff mail in the box with your left. They are real work horses.

Great fun on the flat. The current version of the 2x2 is eaten by the CT90 on hills. Hopefully the next version will not over heat on inclines.

I do like the styling and functionality of the 2x2. Looks like they are on the right track. However, we are still limited by battery price and efficiency, brushless motors have come a long way in the last decade. Hopefully the next few years will show some more power dense batteries. I've wanted to find an old sub 150cc motorcycle on the cheap to convert to electric but there are just too many compromises right now... Especially since Honda just released the Trail 125 for UNDER $4k (US), 150mi range on 1.5 gallons of gas, and a top speed of 50mpg. In order for me to choose the 2x2 the price would have to come down to under $3k or I'd have to be limited to a non ICE vehicle in the area where i'd want to ride it.

As an effing old fella I loved my CT90. My 'modification' to make my CT90 lighter was to remove the air cleaner box, replace it with one of my mother's new pair of nylons using rubber bands from my paper route as the air cleaner. And yes I got a spanking for that! (The days when you could not sue your parents for getting spanked btw...) As an early adopter of EVs I find your perspective on the UBCO 2x2 refreshing. Despite what most people believe about themselves not all people are racers and having choices of a wide variety of EVs is just so exciting. Thanks for producing this video which is out of your 'normal' type of bike to review. Kudos

I want one of the UBCO 2x2's, but my concern is how well it will do in mountainous areas. I am in the Brushy Mountain are of NC. It is a subset of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Not as big, but mountains nevertheless. I am in a valley on the side of the Brushy Mountain range. There are some pretty steep trails up in them thar hills behind my house. I want to know how well one of these will do around here or if they will do anything at all?
@jeffdmax
@jeffdmax 3 года назад
I have one and what your talking about, steep trails, it falls way short. Plus when you start climbing steep stuff the motors will start to over heat and cut power. I still like it fine for around my property and flatter trails . I have a KTM 300 for steep stuff
@peterwilliamson4296
@peterwilliamson4296 3 года назад
I agree Jeff, I think its hill climbing ability hasnt been clearly shown. They say it goes 50kph max speed on the flat yet there are no credible tests on hills! If it cant climb at 50kph then it fails as a commuter since riders would be pushed into the curb by the traffic. If it could climb at 50kph it would be quite appealing as a commuter.
@Bowhuntrr
@Bowhuntrr 3 года назад
@@peterwilliamson4296 Yeah, and if it aint good enough for commuting, it sure aint going to be good enough up in these hills.
@Bowhuntrr
@Bowhuntrr 3 года назад
@@peterwilliamson4296 I started doing a bit more research on these things and found this vid on youtube. This is a good review and testride and although the hills are long still not quite as steep as what I might encounter. But it says a lot about about both our concerns, good and bad. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KSzvZX8BZaY.html
