On April 4, 2017, one of the world’s largest tunneling machines chewed through more than 1,000 tons of concrete and fiberglass to end a 1.7 mile journey underneath downtown Seattle. With a drone’s eye view, this video shows the raw power of Bertha’s breakthrough - start to finish.

I got the chance to visit Seattle Last year. I loved everything except for the fact that there was a noisy, elevated freeway downtown right on the waterfront. It just seemed odd to me that it would be there. I didn't find out that there were plans to remove it and build a tunnel it until I got home and started reading about Seattle. The downtown Seattle area is going to be a lot nicer when it's all finally completed.

The machine will be cut into pieces and hauled away over the next several months. Some pieces may be reused on other projects while others will be recycled.

How many times did you need to replace the boring-bit? Also, how long did that replacement take? How long did disassembly take? I saw the video. It looked like 2 months.
@wsdot
@wsdot 6 лет назад
Crews stopped periodically to replace teeth on the cutterhead. There were more than 700 cutting tools on the tunneling machine's cutterhead. Tunneling machine disassembly lasted for about four months.

Nice job...It took a lot of tenacity to get her to that point...People were trying to sabotage this project since the beginning...There are hundreds of great tunnels, and many are far more extensive than this one; but; They took a used TBM and made it work...You guys should be very proud; we tradesman can appreciate it!
@patrickkelly5009
@patrickkelly5009 5 лет назад
A "Used TBM"? Bertha (the TBM's name) was manufactured by the Hitachi Zosen Sakai works in Osaka Japan. It was specifically designed AND built solely for the SR 99 tunnel replacement and was a BRAND NEW TBM, NOT USED!!!

As traffic is quite horrible in Seattle, I am surprised more tunnels for mass transit are not planned. Perhaps some technological advancement will solve the issue.

Politics are nasty as always. Specially when you hit something that wasn't supposed to be there. I know I install outdoor plumbing for 7 years now. Horizontal drilling, diamond drill you name it. Like 15% of the time you find something thats not on schematics or is on schematics but should've been removed. Nobody wants to take responsibility.
