Quick and Easy Steps. Your chinese scooter won't start? Or does it die when you give it throttle? This is a condensed version of the process by which I figured out the problems with my friends scooter. Not saying yours will be the same, but these are good steps for anyone diagnosing scooters to run through. Also the information compiled on this page will keep you from scouring youtube and the forums for good information. One thing I did not mention is that I did do a valve adjust, but it didn't help me with my scooter (valves were near spec). However, I have read and I do believe stuck exhaust valves can be the problem for many people experiencing performance issues.
If you aren't getting spark (do not fear) look for links below about how to diagnose the issue. Most common problem would be CDI or Coil failing. Luckily on these scooters parts are very cheap, never a bad idea to have an extra part or two in the trunk compartment in case it decides to quit on you.

2:42 Checking for Spark. Make sure ground spark plug, key on, kill switch off. For instructions on how to remove spark plug see video-- • How to install a spark... You can use tool kit provided with tao tao, use screwdriver inserted through end of socket to remove spark plug. Do not overtighted upon reinstall (use anti-seize).
3:23 Checking for Intake Leaks and Dirty Carb. Use Carb Clean not brakleen. Brakleen won't actually run scooter and may make it die, carb clean should act as a fuel where spraying it directly into the rear of the carb should allow the scooter to run. I don't care about people saying this is bad for the scooter or the carb, sorry but these are cheap chinese scooters-- get a life.

Good video. One thing to note-empty a whole can of carb cleaner if you have to. Keep the factory carburetor if you can. The aftermarket carburetors are actually worse. I went through 3 of them. Eventually rebuilt the stock carburetor and put it back on. Runs great now.

I want to add that two of us spent a day + trying last year to get this "thing from hell" going and I frankly just gave up. Everything you pointed out was "wrong" The downhill hose wasn't, The carb needed to be blasted with cleaner and that input hose was so loose I thought I was turning a stripped screw to tighten it. I just did this stuff one thing after the other and it was ready and working in short order. You really made my day so thanks for doing what you do.

I have a 2014 taota0 which I brought last summer. It stop running towards the end of the summer. I have been trying to get it back running since December, changed everything to keep it from bogging out and nothing until I came across your video and low and behold I AM UP AND RUNNING AGAIN- IT WAS THAT LOOSE AREA YOU SSPOKE ABOUT THANKS A MILLION!

Great video! Will have to try these steps. Was having a no start problem which turned out to be a carburetor. Now the problem I have is that the scooter will run fine when it is first started and I can get up to 32 mph but as soon as I let the throttle back any it bogs down and can get 12 mph max. Let it cool down 30 mins and will work fine again for 2 minutes.

Just an update. Its all still working great! The neighbor with the other ride from hell is going to try following your advice. He really had some wild problems. He got it running for a day then the next time out gas pouring out all over the place. *He was tempted to throw a match on it what with the trouble he has had.

Ok I got mine to work got a new carb. My problem is I can get it to idle but when I add throttle it starts to die on me. So I can’t drive it. I don’t know exactly what it is but everything seems sealed. I was having a little trouble getting some gas pressure at first now I got it... hmmm this is like a puzzle tbh

Good video, 3 things to get a engine to pop, spark, fuel and compression,,,I have bikes that good spark and fuel, but tested very low compression, rebuild top end or fix compression issue and you are good,,,test the spark first and foremost, its the eaisiest,,,,,,if you are supecting fuel, remove airbox and hit it with carb cleaner into the intake,,,,,, bike does not start, keep it simple and test those 3 things first,,,99% of the time if you address all of those the bike will at least start,,,,,,

Hi Nice video. Good approach to some of the most common issues. Just one note on a small detail it's a "vacuum operated fuel petcock" or valve in short, has On/Off position no pressure regulator capabilities. Thanks for sharing.

Max's Garage I have the same moped, 2012 taotao 50cc atm-50a1 I believe is the model, my issue is in having no response at all from my electric start, it has no ignition on it, removed the key and lock and bypassed it. The issue in having is that since if had it I've rode it twice, moth times we've had to jump the starter. My question is, could it possibly be a bad solenoid? That's keeping the starter from getting signal? At one time I could unplug both wires to my electric start, touch them and then I could hear the starter solenoid clicking, no response from starter tho, only seems to work when we jump the starter. The scooter is something I got from a friend for cheap and I'm guessing it was just to big of a mess for him... As it is being for me... I'm having a real hard time finding an exact fit for a wiring harness as I'd like to completely and properly replace all the wiring, there's been to many snips and reconnects for me to feel like wiring is not the problem. I've got an ignition and key and that will go on, but until I can find a new harness... Any kind of help you can suggest? Pleaaaaase help if you can!!! Lol thank you

@@Unknown-hl7sb It could also be a faulty brake switch. My electric start would do nothing when I squeezed the front brake lever. I finally tried the rear lever and it worked!

TheOVERMUCH go through the steps in the video. I don't really understand what problem you are having. 3 elements you need for starting: fuel, spark, and air. Get a bottle of carb clean and spray it through the back of the carb if you have spark

My problem is, I'm getting gas in my floaterchamber but it won't go via my sparkplug to my cylinder. I think it has something to do with my fuelpomp/vacuum thing. Not a TAO btw.

For me, the spark plug was loose. Put some never-seez on it cranked it hard, and it runs beautifully.

I have a 2015 tao tao. Ran good until today. I ran the battery down trying to get it started, so while it was on the charger, I sat and thought about what could be wrong. Small engine, first thing to check is the plug. (learned this when I was a kid mowing yards) Pulled the plug out, it was black and gas soaked. Cleaned it up, used an emery board on the electrode, put it back in, fired right up. Gotta get a good plug for this thing next time I go to town.

my kids quad bike was bogging down on acceleration I just found a bad connection on the safety cutout switch it was sparking nothing like working in the dark to shed a bit of light on the problem lol anyway rewired the kill switch and sorted it now thanks for your video ;-)

Have a 2014 tao. Have to to hit the gas and give stay giving it gas or it will shut off also before that happened the scotter kept going fo rears even when I let the gas go. But I'm going to try everything tomorrow, I appreciate it the video was very helpfull.

I decided to open up my speedometer case up to see how the miles tracker and speed cable make the orange needles turn but after reinstalling it on my scooter the needle for the speed no longer moves it is literally stuck and wont move unless I push it with little force and I'm thinking that it may just need some lube since I woke the thing apart or something, any thoughts on a fix ?

They may just be air pollution hoses, which are worthless and don't affect anything. Not sure, but I think so.

Hey Max great tutorial video I have been having a bit of a problem with my gy6 150cc Chinese scooter Eagle I replaced the motor which is now brand new i recently been having a problem with bogging down while riding at high rpms and it would bog down and completely shut off while I'm riding it and giving it gas full speed but It starts right back up it just boggs down??? Any suggestions would help?

@ I doubt if it's the fuel pump because this is a brand new motor I installed two weeks ago and I don't know if it could be a vacuum leak I haven't checked it I guess that's a good place to start I will check that as well and I will keep you updated! Thx a whole lot!

I also replaced the new stator with my old stator because the new one that came with the new motor is not working my headlights and taillights but when I installed the old stater all the lights are working so both stators differ slightly in center width but the same the new stator is not the original from the scooter!

sears woods Definitely a fuel flow issue or a carb issue. Follow the steps for checking for gas at the carb, and then spray carb cleaner directly into the carb. If it starts with the carb cleaner being sprayed in then you know intake leak, or dirty carb. Luckily carbs are cheap and carb cleaner is cheap. Go throug the steps in the video. Also, make sure it is clean fuel and gas is full.

ADJUST THE VALVES. I replaced carb and CDI due to bogging out with no results. I finally checked the valves. The exhaust valve was too tight.

ok, so first of all thank you for this video, definitely helps narrow down the issues. Now, i checked the fuel lines and im getting fuel to the carb, i checked the spark plug and im getting spark, i checked the connections for the intake at the manifold and at the airbox and made sure they were tight, still no start. i removed the intake boot and sprayed carb clean directly into the carb, still no start. im out of ideas. any suggestions? thanks in advance.

Basically. If you’re spraying carb clean directly into engine and it has compression and spark it WILL fire. No ifs ands or buts. So go do that again and make sure it is carb clean not brake clean although that prob will work. Then I would start with easiest- replace plug. Sometimes you can’t see a bad plug. Gap new plug. Use ngk or denso. Then double check spark again. Then make sure scooter has compression (I would think you have checked that). You can have air fuel spark with low compression and you’ll spend your whole life trying to get it start. Cheers hope that helps. Carb clean direct into carb removes all fuel components. You’re left with a problem with spark, compression, or timing. 👍👍👍 also, never think just because you checked something you checked it right or it’s not actually just a weak spark etc. keep at it

Ok so I double checked all of that stuff again and still nothing, I took the carb apart and cleaned out the jets and got it all nice and pretty but still nothing. And funny story, I don’t actually know how to check for compression 😅 how would I go about that?

another update, i dont have to tools to check compression but from all the other videos ive watched that seems to be a pretty common problem as well so i went ahead and gapped the valves to 0.003 intake and 0.005 exhaust, thikning this is definitely the problem because when i opened the valve cover, the rocker bars were stuck so tight there was no gap whatsoever. so like i said i gapped them, put it back together and still no start. i have to be missing something or doing something wrong because now im fresh out of ideas...

First thing you wanna do is spill a shite load of fuel everywhere...second thing you wanna do is make a shite load of healthy blue sparks around the general area you just spilt fuel. :D Just kidding, had to laugh...great video mate. Maybe just put a warning up for really really slow people, that they should wait a few minutes for the fuel to evaporate before doing the spark test...or just do the spark test first to be on the safe side.

as long as gas hasn't sat forever and isn't bad and it really is brand new, I would skip to checking for vacuum leaks and then making sure spark plug gap is good and spark is strong

hi, my scooter starts, then runs for about 5 seconds tops then dies, this is only with no accelerator. after about 5 start, idle, die it will not start again. so i pull the accelerator 5 times or so, then i try start is again and it starts second time and runs for about 5 seconds any advise?

try bypassing the starter solenoid, typically located on the right side. Follow the wire from the starter back towards the battery, you'll run into it. You can also see if the starter will turn over by applying 12Volts directly to the lug on top of the starter.

do you know how to get 50 mph from a 50cc motor put it on a bicycle frame and run the transmission to the front front. then use a gear shifter and the rumor is you get 80 mph.

i heard if you switch gears without even reving the motor only turn up the carb so it will roll at a little higher than idle it will make you 200 miles per gallon. but hey someone prove it.!!!

I really don't know what could be holding it but just really try to yank up on it and then feel where it's catching and look for a bowl or some kind of screw something and just take that out and then see if that helps or not

I recently purchase the very same Scooter 50cc 2014 taotao black the same one from the video I had a situation that wen I was driving at 40 miles per hour the Scooter lost all the speed I was literally driving 5 miles per hour on the intersection hahaha what happen was that my Neibhor told me that it had a brand new carbonator. but he haven't use it in over 4 months and it only has 800 miles I seen some videos but I'm not sured what could be

+Qué Onda Productions Hey mate, I have the same problem unable to start the bike. The battery is fully charged so it has to be something else. Could I use starter fluid instead? If so, where do I put it? Newbie here.

Optimus Prime yes you can definitely use starter fluid. use same steps as video, check for spark, check for fuel, then spray fluid looking for intake leaks. If scooters starts while spraying starter fluid into carburetor then you know a) you have spark b) the engine still works c) carb is either dirty, you have a vacuum leak, or some other issue related to fuel air mixture

use common sense as starter fluid is very flammable. have a fire extinguisher handy and don't get your face near anything that could ignite (like the fluid after spraying it into the carb)

not a great idea checking for spark right after you spilled gas all over the engine LOL ive done that mistake on my lawnmower it got on fire funny asf

+ESCvideos2015 yeah you are right, hopefully people can figure that out for themselves. I didnt even think about the proper sequence as I figured it´s common sense. Plus gas evaporates real fast, you wouldn´t be watching youtube videos if you worked that fast.
