The Vectric Tool Database - Tool Naming Conventions
More down here ↓↓↓ Click SHOW MORE!
This video is an answer to a couple of questions I have received about the Tool Naming Conventions in the Tool Database in Vectric Cut2D Desktop, Cut2D Pro, VCarve Desktop, VCarve Pro, and Aspire, Version 10.0 and newer.
In this video, I’ll talk about some of the changes in the Vectric Tool Database, starting in Version 10.0, when Vectric introduced the new Tool Naming Conventions. I’ll show you why the convention is important by demonstrating the addition of a new tool to the database.
Then I’ll show you how to get in and edit that tool naming format to standardize the tools within a group, in order to make the addition of new tools easier. I’ll also show you some of the new variables you can add to the name format should you wish to do so.
As usual, if you have any comments or questions about anything I covered in this video, please join me for the Live Q&A, or put ‘em in the comment section below.
On Sunday, October 10th, I’ll be hosting a LIVE Q&A session, where you can ask your questions pertaining to anything I’ve covered in this video. That Q&A starts at 3 pm Eastern time, Noon Pacific time. Hope to see you there!

Thankyou perfect. I was looking to see how I could name specific tools, like Yonico .... This video was perfect, but had to infer, that you can put the brand name into the specific tool by adding it without parentheses Much appreciated. I learned a lot

Most excellent video Mark! Very clear and concise. The big learning for me here is the naming convention and how it works. I now see this all thru a different lens. I should have looked this one over much earlier since it would have saved me a lot of trial and errors.

It's how we all learn, Alan. I used VCarve Pro for 4 years before I learned about this. Of course by that time my tool database was an absolute mess. When I got to Version 10, I was better able to organize things. Now it's super easy to keep up to date.

One thing to help shorten names for v-bits. Instead of typing Degree in the title and your name is now long and you have to use lower slider to read the full title. Use the "ALT" command for degrees. Press your alt button and type "0176". You now have say 90° instead of 90 Degree. You save 5 spaces.

I appreciate that Mike. I totally forgot about that when I made the video, AND during the Live Q&A! I had it written down, too!

Good video Mark. The standard database (including downloaded Amana database) include many tools that I do not have. I created a new group called MY TOOLS and have been copying tools into that group to make it easier to find what I actually have. Steve

Great workaround, Steve! Between you and me, I downloaded the Amana tool database and installed it on an old version of Aspire so I didn't fill my database with tools I don't have. Then when I purchase a new Amana tool, I go to that version and export a TOOL file for that tool, then import it into my current database in the newer version.

If you are worried about the width of the name for instance, let’s say you are in the End Mill section so why name each bit starting with the End Mill seems redundant, another thing why do you keep bits you can not use in your bit list. That being said; Thanks for the helpful information you provide.
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 2 года назад
I'm not personally concerned with the width of the name - I'm just warning folks of the potential if they are concerned with it. Also, I removed the two bits I added in this video during the Live Q&A to demonstrate how to do that. All the other tools in my database are tools I use - even if only rarely.

Hey Mark!! Great video - I'm just getting started and am a big organizer of things, so this video was spot on for me. I do have a question regarding the tool number. While watching, it looks like all your tools are number 1. How do you handle that as I've gotten some errors when saving tool paths where two different bit geometries conflict with the same tool number? Thank you for your time.
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 4 месяца назад
Basically, the tool number is really only important if you have an Automatic Tool Changer. Then, assigning a tool number is crucial. I never really bothered with changing tool numbers, because I don't have an automatic tool changer, and I save separate g-code files for each tool. That way, the tool number doesn't matter. You're free to number them however you wish, though.

Does anyone know if there is a way to distinguish between an up cut and a down cut end mill? I suppose I could add a note.
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 5 месяцев назад
If you're talking about within the tool database, about the only way to distinguish between the two is to add a note. The toolpaths will be identical whether you're using an upcut or a down cut bit.

Question Mark, On my Amana tools I like to have the part number with it to keep track of them is there a good way of doing that
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 2 года назад
You can easily add the Amana part number to the name of the bit if you'd like, just my typing that number into the Format blank after the last variable in brackets. I tend to put that info in the NOTES section of the tool info area. I'll get into that a little deeper during the Live Q&A today.
