This video is damn late and was supposed to be out on Monday but I was ill. And also playing Monster Hunter. A lot of Monster Hunter.
I figured I'd make a review since I already did a preview video for it earlier and give my thoughts and opinions on the episode. It's pretty good.
No cut content video for this episode since there's not a whole lot to speak of and the stuff I am aware of might end up being used next episode so that'll have to wait. Sorry.

Biggest complaint, the end wheree you get all the characters and only some have their exclusive screens (Louis, Violet, AJ) but others are all clumped together (Aasim, Omar, Willy) like it incentivizes us not to care as much for them.

I have a theory on why the game doesn't allow you to get to know and interact with the other kids mainly because I don't think they are going to have a very significant roles in the storyline so therefore those teens could likely be more of a _minor characters_ in the rest of the episodes - I think.

10:00 - 11:00. I completely agree. What were Clementine and Christa doing that entire time? They were together for 16 months, surely something would've happened worth talking about. I wish they'd do a better job at filling in the gaps.

I agree with you about the possibility of Aasim dying off quickly, since he said that he chronicles everything in a diary, I'm wondering if you'll obtain that later on and learn more about the raiders since they've dealt with them in the past.

Yeah good point, forgot about that. If anything maybe his journal will have some patterns that they pick up on, such as him noticing Marlon's erratic behaviour around the time the twins went missing. Surely there has to be something he's noted down that'll be useful, otherwise I'm not sure why they'd have him chronicle everything to begin with. Maybe it won't end up being a thing and he's just a smart dude who likes to keep a diary. *shrug*

This final season could be the 2nd best after season 1. Remember when we had to wait 2-3 months for each episode back then? Ahh.. good memories But yes If you pay more attention, choices actually DO matter in this and i'm glad Telltale finally took a step. Anyways i'm really looking forward for the future episodes!

Not a chance, we're going to be stuck in this school for the whole game. Doesn't matter what you do in the end, AJ is a fucking moron and kills Marlon when you could've done anything else. (Why shoot Marlon when he puts the gun down, I ask you?)

Well I'm sure we're going to be visiting the base of operations for the raiders next episode, but being this season is only 4 episodes if we're still in the schoolhouse by the end of episode 2 we've been stuck there for 50% of the game; lest we spend a lot more time out next episode, there's a good balance, or the places we visit in episode 3 and 4 make the school pale in comparison I don't see it as a highlight

Cinematics in this episode were amazing. That one shot where there are no cuts, and it even goes first person(I noticed 1st person shots a couple times, odd for a game like this, but very well done this season). That shot was amazing. Also I agree with you on the ending.

I think it's unfair to compare the Final Season to Season 1. They are both completely different in overall story, narrative, setting and characters. The first season had the appeal of the apocalypse as it was happening, the final season takes place almost ten years later, where the characters have already developed for the most part and the world is already in ruin. I keep seeing this with almost every franchise. To the fans, nothing will ever be as good as the original, or at the very least, never as good as the first entry they ever played. I think it's important to judge each season individually, rather than judging them by their predecessors. I agree with most of your points and thought you did a great job for a review! I thought this episode was a great beginning of the end and I can't wait for the rest...

They definitely have different goals and like I said, it is sort of unfair considering the circumstances surrounding how the game was set up. They were kinda limited in what they could do with this season without going really crazy (I think that's why they initially tried to give Javier the spotlight because of all the conditional factors around Clementine but clearly that didn't work). That's why I dislike how much they keep pushing the season 1 references - let this be it's own game. A reference every now and then is fine but there are ton of parallels towards the first season, even the keyart is basically the same as the original. I feel like they oughta let it be it's own thing instead of trying to remind us of Season 1 because it encourages the comparisons.

Very interesting point you made, the one about the overkill of Lee mentions. The first ever time Clem spoke about Lee in season 2, I felt my heart ache when she did. But then she did it again. And again. And it became less special and gut wrenching? Never realized it affected me less and less because the callbacks were used too often after S01. I have very high hopes for this season though. Thoroughly enjoyed episode one and I liked your review! Curious to see your next one after episode 2 has come out.

I didn't have as much of a problem with the Lee mentions in the second season because there, his loss and subsequent legacy was still relevant and fresh. She was still trying to carry on his teachings, follow in his footsteps (like mentioning to Sam that they were smarter than the walkers), and ultimately manage a group just as he did before. But by the Final Season, he should be well and truly dead. There's supposed to be a bittersweet tragedy in passing the torch to her. She survives but eventually he is forgotten, just like everyone else who dies in this world. Of course she should honor his sacrifice but to basically keep bringing him back from the dead to pander to fans removes the power of that original ending. Lee wasn't the only one who made sacrifices. What about Luke? Kenny? Hell, even Jane? And she shared her PERIOD with Javi, a very personal and vulnerable topic regarding her puberty. You don't share something like that with someone you could care less about.

I feel like Tenn was a better written "Walter" of the series. The person who retains their optimism and still sees some good in the world. But whereas Walter went the preachy, in-your-face route, even to the point of being an idiot (trusting Bonnie when she was clearly scouting out the ski resort), Tenn is handled with more grace. I was genuinely touched with his vision of what an afterlife could look like for the walkers and the victims of them, a place "where everyone gets to be a person again". This is coming from someone who's an atheist. Non-religious. But nothing is wrong with a HOPEFUL thought, however fanciful. These things can keep you going in tough times. Tenn would also teach AJ things about how the old world worked, about the people who protected the citizens like firefighters and policeman, and how before the apocalypse, you held a trial to determine if someone was "justified" or a "murderer". Tenn was the one character I wanted to REMAIN an artist. Imaginative and hopeful. He never came across as insufferably naive, completely delusional, or a mentally disabled idiot.

Eh, I think you may have misunderstood Walter's character. That's kind of the point. Walter was a guy who tried to place himself in a position of trust to the point of being naive and not realising that you just can't do that in a world like TWD. He talks about mistakes being something that you can forgive, but as we know, when he finds out Nick killed Matthew - he stops being the friendly person he was previously. He has to be convinced not to kill Nick. It's actually a pretty good character arc because it shows that it's easy to just say optimistic things all the time but when reality hits hard it's really not. I respect you're feelings on Tenn and I sort of agree but I think 'being an artist' in such uncertainty won't work out that well. Everyone always talks about the future when really it's all about the present. Nobody ever mentions accepting death if it means they keep their humanity or morals. I suppose that's a bit of a criticism I have with the series in general and it seems as though Kenny was the only character to have a strong stance on his beliefs (he would easily sacrifice himself for the people he cares about). Would Tenn like to remain an artist if means the risk of him dying unprepared? I wish that kind of thing was discussed more in these stories.

But then how did he survive so long? It's kind of the same incredulity I hold towards James. How could he turn his back to Lily like that and truly believe she could do no more harm? Once again, that may be the "point" of his character, but it's hard to believe he survived to this point being that careless. That moment with Nick was probably one of the best moments in Season Two, and that's a season I really dislike. Not as much as New Frontier but yeah. Also, Walter's story with Matthew felt very much like a *Bury Your Gays* moment. He even looks at the photo of them together before he's shot. What I meant by "remain an artist" is, I didn't want Tenn to become bitter or cynical. No one can retain complete innocence in an apocalypse, but that doesn't mean joyful moments or hope disappears entirely. Tenn even goes through that character arc you're talking about where he realizes he's been naive this whole time and even asks if AJ can teach him to be more like _him._

I enjoyed your analysis! I also think your points are definitely valid, but I just want to slightly rebut what you said in regards to AJ. For AJ, you used the word "unacceptable" for a lot of his actions, which I 100% agree with. However, though what he did in the finale ofcourse was unacceptable, I still think it's justifiable. Here's why: Like you said, AJ is not socialized and also is currently unable to decipher different complexities of confrontation and danger. All he knows is, if he senses danger, reach for his gun and be ready to shoot. He did it with Abel and he did it with Marlon. Here's the key difference between those situations though. In the Abel confrontation, AJ is looking for Clem to make the call because the situation arose so quickly. He chose not to take matters into his own hands. In the Marlon situation, he's given more time to think about what's going on (which doesn't really mean much because he's so ignorant) and this time decides to try and make the call himself. Lol so using all that he knows, he decided to shoot Marlon (which ofcourse isn't surprising based on AJ's upbringing). Even if Clem tells him that not every confrontation needs to involve violence, he still was never clearly taught when a confrontation does or doesn't, so he resorts to the "never hesitate" instruction, which I think is a reasonable decision for AJ to make given his ignorance. Just my two cents.

I actually totally agree with what you're saying. I could've worded it better. I think my real issue is that it seemed like the only time where he didn't wait for Clementine's call in the game. Even when he does something bad he always looks to Clem and does what she says but here he acts without warning. I think I would let him off if he at least said something like "Clem, I'm gonna shoot!" or something. I'm not gonna hold it against him or anything but I really hope this is will be the last time and isn't a recurring issue.

@@InColdBloodTTG Ah, I see yeah you're totally right. He never really gives any implication that he was planning on making a call himself. I guess he sorta does while trying to convince Clem for him to sleep under the bed. I remember him saying "I can protect us Clem!" Or something like that, but that's just speculation, and may have nothing to do with his decisions that follow.

I really enjoyed your review of the first episode! I find myself agreeing with most of your points throughout this video, or at the very least got a new perspective on the plot. I didn't feel very empathetic towards Marlon and his struggles immediately, but I really liked how you framed his situation and showed the reasons for his initial reactions. You do a very good job explaining your points and it's hard not to agree lol Carrying on a little about your point of over emphasizing season 1, I'm really disappointed that they don't address season 3 at all. I understand that a lot of fans didn't enjoy the game as much, but it's as if the game never happened within the story, and that makes me a little sad. I don't want them to make constant reference to it like they do season 1, but it would have been nice.

Yeah, they seem to be acting that way towards Season 2 as well. You can't even choose the Wellington ending in the choice-save feature and it mentions two things. At least there's a Javier and Gabe mention.

InColdBlood I hadn't even realized that there was a Javier and Gabe mention, I must have missed it lol. I wonder why they want to distance themselves so much from these seasons, I understand showcasing their "Magnus opus" in the first season, but I feel like most people playing this season, played those other seasons as well. I find it very peculiar, and I have this sneaking feeling we are going to get a lot of comparisons between Clementine and Lee within this game, and I really hope they don't go too far down that route. I guess only time will tell.

Something that really bothers me about the first episode is that when you can say to AJ 'don't hesitate/save the last bullet for yourself/aim for the head' AJ hesitates with the walker in the car no matter what you say, and at the finale some of the options just don't fit. I think 'What? I aimed for the head.' was the only option that felt natural and fitted to the situation. I love the first episode but that's just something I can't get past.

Walking Dead has changed. Clem was an innocent 8 year old and then she hardened after the 9 years since the apocalypse started but I think it is still part of the story. I consider New Frontier part of the story even when I don't really like it. Season 1 is pretty tame compared to the car crashes, explosions, gun fights and action packed scenes in New Frontier. In Final Season, it goes back to the tame and normal feeling like season 1 and 2 even if it feels REALLY different from them. I like Season 1,2 and Final Season but this story is great.

This is what I was thinking. If we're lucky, the devs put out the choices/script for this next episode so we can at least try to piece together what the story was supposed to be. I absolutely plan on looking at the files and I have no doubt lots of other people will do the same too.

I only watched a playthrough of the first episode, so I don't know if this is dependent on your choices, but I noticed that AJ was in the middle of the other kids when Marlon asked them to let him leave. Did nobody notice him go behind Marlon, not even Rosie, before he shot him?

What do you think about the way telltale handled Kenny ? it would of been cool if he can see Lilly again, I think she'd forgive him because she probably had to do more or the same amount of shit to survive.

Terribly. They really could have done so much better with his character and I was disappointed we never got to meet Christa again with him since Kenny can save her life determinately in S1E5 but we'll never get to see that scene now. It's why I prefer the Wellington ending. I'm not sure what Lilly would think. I think she would still dislike him because of what happened but I think she would have moved past it. I like Lilly, I hope (if) she returns that they don't change her character too much and make her an antagonist.

Yeah I probably will! I did see the trailer, and I'm a little bit worried. I like Lilly as both a person and as a character and they made her seem like Carver with what she said to Clementine. That was unneccesary and harsh and I found that to be a really weird thing for her to say. I hope they don't turn her into a villian for no reason. But I can't judge the episode until I play it for myself so we'll see how it all plays out.

I would have liked If you will! So please make a review. :) I know what you mean, but to me it sounded more like a serious advice to make Clem more careful. The Line that bothers me more is the " don't ever say his name" thing. Lily only mentioned that she could have die, like Lee, and Clem gets angry and defends Lee with the intensity again that made us believe AGAIN that there was no Christa, No Kenny , No parents in her Life... Only Lee... You know what i mean? I can say that again and again, but to make us believe that Clem was soooo Close to Lee for the few months He spent with her, so she barely mention Kenny, although he did as much as Lee did for her and became another father-figure when she stayed with him for two more years, forgot about Christa, who she didn't mention at all since Season 2, even If she spent the whole S2 to ask herself where she is and tried to find her after the long time they stick together, and don't really care anymore about her own parents, her biological Mom and dad! In my personal opinion that is really ridiculous If you think about that..

(I would have replied to this earlier but RU-vid still doesn't tell me when people comment, really really annoying sorry) I think you're right actually, it's just her tone and the footage (someone standing on Clem while she's on the ground) makes it seem a lot worse. I also totally agree with you on that last part. I think there's a reason for that, which I don't know if I'll mention in my EP2 review, but in a review I might make for the whole season because I'm starting to notice the frequent callbacks to Season 1 and over indulgance in Lee to the point where it's starting to undermine the other people in Clementine's life. Season 1 was a great game, I love it and I love Lee. But as you said, Kenny, Christa and obviously her parents are people she should be thinking about way more than Lee considering the time she spent with them.

I get it People loved Lee's and Clem's relationship, and it is indeed lovely, but come one why is the story only about Lee's and Clems bond (except from Clem/Aj) if they developed and showed other relationships that Clem had throughout the years? Why they gave us a choice to stick with Kenny and brought him back in S2, and showed two S3 flashbacks with him, and made us believe that Clem really wanted to see Christa again, if it doesn't mean much in case of impact in her life now? I think it is not fair to make us believe that lee was the most important person in her life, even more important than her parents and to neglect the relationships she had with Christa or Kenny, although they also did whatever they could to take care of her, just because the Clem/Lee bond was the most popular by the most fans. Telltale should have focused on CLEM'S actual feelings and point of view she should have, but instead they focuse too much on FAN'S point of view. They portray it like that, because this is what the the most fans want, that Lee should have been her closest person, but that is not the reality, how it should be. I think it would have been much better and more fair to portray the relationships with Lee/Kenny/Christa on the same level, because all three of them impacted her in different kind of ways, but with the same intensity. Before S4 came out, I already had a feeling that it would be like that and that is one of the reasons i didn't buy this game, and if i'm being honest with you i'm glad about that. Even if i still like this game and it is still interesting to watch for me, it has many issues and flaws from a rational point of view. Since A new frontier this game series isn't the same anymore to me personally, because it disappoints me over and over again in some kind of way. We already noticed AGAIN that our choices don't matter in a game that always tell us the exact opposite, they forced unlogical plot twists to make the story interesting, they make most of the characters to act or to feel unrealistic and more...but i still want to know how the story ends, how it all will turn out. It was for me unexpecting enough, that they showed Lily in the trailer! Okay the story builder kinda spoiled lily's return but still... that makes me believe, that there is another old character who will return, and that it will be more shocking than lily's comeback...someone that Telltale didn't mention at all until now... i don't give up on my hopes to see Christa again. ^^

Yeah that was really stupid. They think the worst episode in the entire franchise (S3E1) is 9/10. I'm 100% sure they were being paid off by Telltale but now they can't afford to.

What do you think about all the shipping war of Clouis and Violentine that is going on now in the comments? In my opinion neither of them fits Clementine. Louis is ridiculous and hormon-driven and thirsty on Clem and Violet still mourns after Minerva and is too serious, plus i don't see Clem as gay, i think Marlon was the best choice for her until the basement scene and everything could have been so good, if the plot twist didn't happen. It makes me mad, how they wasted so many opportunities and potential.

How this question wasn't asked in the first 100 comments I will never know since it seems to be all the community talks about, lol. I have exactly the same opinion as you. Neither fit the criteria for me honestly for the reasons you mentioned. I'm of the opinion that the romance should be something that occurs naturally, not as a selling point of the characters. The community is forcing it way too hard. We barely know these people yet and we saw how Marlon was, how do we know Violet/Louis aren't hiding their own secrets? Nothing has happened between either characters to indicate some kind of romance. I think the worst of it all is that Clementine is so emotionally detached to anyone but AJ that I can't ever see her in a healthy romantic relationship. She's lost so many people that are close to her it would feel incredibly OOC for her to somehow be in a relationship that isn't incredibly fanservicey. Marlon could have worked but we'd need to see more of him before I could say one way or another. I'm very likely going to ignore any advances just because I don't see how it would make sense for Clementine to follow either of them. That's just me.

I think Louis is acting the way he is because he wants to impress Clem ;) Maybe he acts different without Clem around ;) I think its too early to tell do they fit with Clem or not :) And really its a shame that they killed Marlon of... like his character was so interesting D: And they did the exact same thing with the new frontier episode 1!! :D Like nowadays it's normal to expect telltale to kill somebody important of in the first episode. And the death was same... Bullet trough head :/ Poor Marlon and Mariana. :(

@@InColdBloodTTG glad to hear that you agree with me... I especially think that LouisxClem is way too overrated, and i always feel alone with my opinion when i see all the Clouis shippers. After what happened to Marlon and how this poor guy became a victim of Telltales writing i want my Clem to be on her own now... Not with Louis, not with Violet, just with Aj... If Clem will die this season, it would be kinda sad, when she dies as virgin, but having sex with a clown or mope isn't better either.

Abel at the station is just a guy trying to get supplies (like AJ and Clem), at that point in time AJ had no reason to think of him as a monster. Lilly and Nick don't get a pass because of circumstance of the killing, but because Lee and Walter are not keeping stationary camps. Marlon has knowledge of the boarding school, he can escape imprisonment or if exiled he can reveal the boarding school location to his slaver pals. even if you justify the enslavement of Tenn's sisters as keeping the group safe, you can't justify the bludgeoning of Brody and the attempt on Clementine's life. when all off this is revealed to AJ he is convinced that Marlon is a monster, furthermore at the moment of AJ's shot Marlon was getting away with murder. it was by this lack of will to act from the rest of the group that had AJ to do what is right (in context). Same as Carl had to kill Ben.

I don't know about that, you could say the same thing about the bandits from Season 1 Ep3. They come to your motor inn and take you hostage, demanding food. Any positive gestures at that point are long gone. Also, AJ actually wanted to shoot Abel. He gets annoyed that you let Abel leave and you have to explain to him why you did that so no I don't agree that Abel is any different from you're average bandit/raider. Also, Marlon was not a friend of the slavers. I don't know why you think that - him giving over Tenn;s sisters was pure risk assessment like dropping Ben in the belltower. You don't drop Ben in the belltower because you hate him (well, maybe some people did) you drop him because you're weighing up "Is it better to let him die to save everyone else?". Marlon decided it was worth the risk in order to save his group. Everything he did WAS for the group, there is no reason he would sell them out. I'm not trying to justify him murdering Brody or selling out Clementine, it was an accident and not planned at all. He was willing to do anything he could to continue protecting the group even if it meant extreme circumstances. If you think Marlon deserved to die then I can't say you're wrong but I don't think you're giving Marlon the credit he deserves for doing whatever he could to do what he believed was right for everyone else.

The end should be Clementine getting bit by the LAST walker, since we know that even just in Season 4 in the tv series, the zombies started significantly weakening. At this point, 10 years should’ve definitely got rid of the zombies.

Yeah I saw that too, but it won't be the same one they were going to do in S3 with Sandra. I'm kinda confused what they could show us because I'm pretty sure we saw Clem and Lee together all the time without any timeskips in S1 E3 to the finale.

You thought Marlons design was terrible? Really? I thought he had one of the best designs in the whoile franchise. I don't agree with that... but i do agree with other points you made... personally i HATED this dumb plot twist, it didn't make much of sense to me to portray Marlon like that in the end, while he was so kindhearted before...i had the feeling it came out of nowhere. I get it they needed some interesting story plot, and it could have worked, if marlon wouldn't have treat Clem like his prisoner and victim at the end, cause there was no need for that, since he started to like her before the basement scene. My point is, this plot twist could have been better written, more logical...I was mad that there was no choice to save marlon somehow... what's the point of a game based on choices that don't matter? Also Marlon had much more potential than this, he could have rescue the twins to make up for his mistake, he would have shown that he has courage and bravery, he could have been Clem's right hand after the group would have forgive him. But Telltale chose the easiest route.. killing him off in the first episode. Also to portray Clem like a strong heroin again, like a level-headed bad ass, who has leader-skills and knows what to do in this situation seems over the place to me, a bit of helpless would have been more realistic. Like you said the wellington ending was also totally pointless at the end, they even didn't include it at all. A few years ago they promised not forget about kennys hat, that he can only give us if we chose the wellington ending... the game FORCE you to stay with kenny and not staying at wellington, and while i stayed with kenny, it is totally unfair for other people who went to wellington, because it doesn't matter at all... and the reason why Clem mentions Lee that much is pure fan service. Honestly... like you said... Clem had so many people in her life like her parents, Kenny and Christa, all people who spent much more time with her than lee. But since lee is the most beloved character, telltale don't need other characters to make money with... In reality Clems feelings would have been much more complex and deep, she wouldn't think only about lee... she would have think about all of the other people, too.. she often acts like she only knew and loved Lee....that is a point that really bothers me! Also thank you that you mentioned how goofy Louis is, i think he is really cringy and awkward with his "jokes" and flirty comments.... a bit of joking around here and there is fine, but he is over the place for me, i reallly tried to like him but i couldn't. He doesn't take things seriously and acts like a comedian...

I think we pretty much agree on everything except Marlon's design haha. I dislike it personally because it feels out of place, he looks like a punk rocker from the 80's and it doesn't vibe well. But it's not too big of a deal. I agree, they could have given us a redemption arc for Marlon, prove that he can make up for his mistakes and change but like you said, they took the easy road and decided killing him was a more interesting 'twist' which I wasn't a fan of at all. I think him being a determinant character would have been perfect but that's gone now... I'm actually kind of mindblown by how silly the whole Kenny's hat thing is - they promised it would matter 2 years ago and yet here we are and it's nowhere to be seen. They definitely know about it 100%. People on the forums and on AmAs, twitter etc have talked about it for 2 years but it looks like they're just going to pretend it and the Wellington ending doesn't exist. Pretty disappointing.

Yepp, i also liked Marlon as a character, and if they would have portrayed him only as stressed, overwhelmed, desperate character with a mental breakdown, i would be totally fine with, but they portrayed him like a wannabe-villain...it felt rushed and forced and didn't work for me, it was too dramatic and over the place.I know they promised that, i read the comments 2 years ago and when i realized that telltale lied to us, i was really disappointed... i already imagined how it would be if Clem would give Aj the hat... i imagined she would do that after she cut his afro... and then she would mention that there was a man who wanted to raise Aj like a son and protected him when he was a baby with all his cost. It probably will never happen that Aj would hear something about kenny, but i bet she will mention Lee towards him later.... what a surprise... ^^ Ignoring a promise is unacceptable.
