Glad you liked that but Neil actually stole it from Kennedy's speech at Rice University September 12 1962. He rephrased it so it wasn't necessarily plagiarized.
@@jamesgoines7663 As a self-avowed nerd, I obviously looked it up as soon as you mentioned it and then followed the white rabbit. Turns out, Kennedy himself was paraphrasing Albert Einstein, who some two decades earlier had said "as our circle of knowledge expands, so does the circumference of darkness surrounding it". Lots of interesting literature down that rabbit hole, touching on everything from the uncertainty principle to the long dark tea-time of the soul. My good dude - thank you for putting me to that exercise. :D
I had a high school physics teacher who'd go deliriously happy when explaining some of the most obtuse concepts in physics. We used to make jokes that the guy is splooging his pants just explaining to us what quantum entanglement means. That sheer joy in loving the science made not just me a forever geek who is passionate about physics, but I've since managed to make my kids love science too. When I see Neil, or Bill Nye, I feel like yeah, as a Human Civilization, we still got a fighting chance. We are not altogether governed by a confederacy of dunces. We got folks who know shit too.
Love that guy. We desperately need more of that kinda people in every profession: Getting amazing sh*t done while keeping it real and being cool and funny a.f.
Neil deGrasse Tyson rules! Loved his story about him meeting Carl Sagan as a young boy in another interview. He sure carries on the torch handed to him after Sagan died. Not only the series Cosmos but also to educate the public in a way even I can understand!
Carl Sagan also have the keynote address at UIUC the year before I graduated. I was there to experience when the choir I was in sang there. I was obsessed with him when I was a child!
My dad was a chemical engineer. Listening to Neil is like having a converataion with him again. (Check out the Order of the Engineer the Canadian Oath... I always get inspiration from it)
His passion and his energy are contagious, this man is truly living his purpose, and thank God we are all alive and blessed enough to live during his lifetime! 😊
Listening to Neil talk never gets old, everytime i hear him explain something; I always feel like I've learned something new or come out w/ a new understanding of a subject I thought I knew.
I've had the quote "As the area of our knowledge grows, so too does the perimeter of our ignorance" in my email sig for years. I love it every time he says it.
Watching Neil get fired up about science never gets old. If more people were like him we'd probably be on Mars already... no geopolitical spurs needed.
if more people were like him maybe there'd be more assault allegations. just saying I used to be a fan of him but assault allegations plague him regardless of his scientific achievement which were important achievements at least for the education he completed for millions about physics. Never meet your heroes come to mind
Clearly, you haven't read his book about the military and science. He would tell you "if you want to go to Mars, just convince the US government China is going and we will be there in a year"
Neil is such a great man and so humble and his humor is on point, him and Stephen together is something I can never miss. Thank you both, gentlemen, for doing what you do and sharing your talents and joys with us.
Every time I listen to Neil deGrasse Tyson, I find it hard to believe that he is an astrophysicist - may be because he is so excited about it and he makes it sound like so much fun. This man could be an actor or a comedian. He is such a delight to listen to and he draws people into his passion. If he was my physics teacher, I’d literally be on the moon today.
I wish he was my science teacher. I could listen to him all day. His show is amazing, he even talks about superhero’s and how some of the scenarios could be true.🤔
What a lovely man. Always interesting. It helps that Stephen is very knowledgeable on science matters and is very engaged with the interview. You can tell he really enjoys their conversations. I enjoy them too.
I enjoy that Stephen will always listen to what his guests have to say, rather than interrupting and fake laughing at everything like fallon and Kimmel.
Neil taking the image he no doubt has sitting on his desk and bedside table out of Stephens hand and looking at it for himself instead of the audience is the best wholesome, enthusiastic, nerdgasm I have seen in a very long time. I love NdGT
NDT is such an amazing person full of life and wonder! Sometimes it's hard to believe that he once considered being a male exotic dancer! It's true. He even laughs about it today and shares pictures of it. Thank God he stuck with physics! I hope he sticks around long enough to witness the day when we contact other life on neighboring planets. He deserves that!!!
Which “neighboring planets?” That’s just silly. There’s enough real knowledge to experience aww and wonder without the need for science fiction. Maybe start with learning our solar system so you don’t write nonsensical comments. Science fiction is great for entertainment purposes only. Learn the difference
@@rlud304 More like extreme arrogance on your part. It's quite arrogant and egotistical to think our rock is the only one with life. No one said it had to be in this universe. The possibilities are limitless unless we place boundaries on them.
Love when these space geeks get together and share the fun with us 😍😂 "...the perimeter of our ignorance." Stephen throws down his glasses... Perfection. Sheer reactionary perfection. 👏👏👏
I teach electronics in Kabale, Uganda and I use Neil's videos to inspire the students. After they watch Neil and his enthusiasm for science, the learning becomes seamless.
I like NDT but please, the circle reference is Einstein: As our circle of knowledge expands, so does the circumference of darkness surrounding it. I independently recreated this (somewhat inelegantly) as : the circumference of ignorance "the more your circle of knowledge grows the more topics you discover about which you know nothing" at about 15, long before I knew it was an old observation.
I've watched Dr.Tyson's several PBS' documentaries. What comes to mind is the glowing fashion that he recalls the efforts of Galileo Galilee's telescopic efforts and that astronomer's book, 'The Starry Messenger.' The same name of Dr. Tyson's new book. A very great tribute he has paid to that long ago pioneer.
One of my favorite person in the world :) I remember one of his quotes from cosmos that blew my mind."how many stars, how many planets, how many ways to be alive..."
I wanted to study physics and astronomy, but dad said you should be a teacher! lol 27 years of Special Ed. Neil is my hero, my favorite human on earth. I was born in Lares Puerto Rico and well, we have lots of 8mm film of fantastic accounts in our sky. Just so exiting! MAGNIFICENT!
As my knowledge expands the more the perimeter of my ignorance does as well The fancy way of saying: “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.” ― Albert Einstein
What I love most about Neill deGrasse Tyson is that he can hardly contain his need to convey how much more information there is to be had by our recent developments in science. Incidentally, that often gives comedians a chance to trip him up and tickle his enthusiasm even more. How good. 😆😆😄😄😀😀
This guy is an excellent science communicator! There's others on here, like Dr. Becky, Anton Petrov, Scott Manley, AronRa, Steve Mould, Hank Green, Professor Dave, Forrest Valkerie... and so many others, but this guy ... he and Bill Nye _started_ the idea of a science communicator!
Listening to this is like looking closely at an art masterpiece like the Sistine Chapel, the more you do it, the more you feel insignificant. But it's so beautiful, it makes one cry. It just blows your mind. I 🤎🤎🤎 it.
It must be hard for Neil, having to relate to commoners. Even most of the people in the comment section are praising Neil, the person, but not praising what he actually, "said."
Neil just did the best imitation of Stephen doing his imitation of how celebrities present themselves when Stephen welcomes them to make their famous appearances on the Late Show !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*I'm editing my comment a few minutes after posting my original comment below. After reading through many of the comments left for this video, I realized what the issue is with the little things here and there I've heard about people not liking Neil. When I see this video, and enjoy the entire interview, then see how everyone commenting on this video basically saying they love NDT, I realized it is the average person that is drawn to what he is speaking about, and learns the most, and will leave a comment saying they love NDT. And that is who Neil is trying to reach, not the people already in science that are jealous of his success, maybe? **And now to my original comment: I recently saw the IMAX movie called "Deep Sky", and they talked about the JWST, showing the design of, and folding and unfolding of the telescope's mirror. The telescope has already discovered some surprises: The Telescope has found Methane from a Brown Dwarf star, Hydrogen and Water on an exoplanet, and found Carbon in a Galaxy formed within 350 million years after the Big Bang. And it's just getting started...
He still didn't clearly explain why the moon missions stopped after 1972, but the rest of this segment was, as always, so much fun and so interesting to watch
I have just recently began a journey to educate myself about Gravity. It has always been like a nawing on my mind that my understanding of Gravity was flawed. Those of you who have already done this know all the discoveries I have uncovered and the changes it has made in my perception of reality. NDT has been instrumental on my journey. Along with Newton and Einstein. To truly be able to grasp and understand these two brilliant Theorists is when I finally felt a satisfaction and a sense of awe of GRAVITY. If you feel as I did I invite you to start your own journey. I promise you will find it something you wished you had done long ago.
deGrasse's huge personality/ego swallowed up Colbert's whole show, including the musicians, their instruments, the cameras, the lights, and the entire audience.
Yep, often a sign of dangerous personality disorders. Combine that with the allegations made against Neil and you start to wonder why everyone loves him so much.
@@HelloThere-xx1ct obviously you are a hater and i can't fault you because that is your job to hate. you know nothing else. i've had people lie on me before as well. FOH.
