Here, D'Angelo is in prison, doubting what values "The Game" really has. His mother tries to convince him to "take the weight" and explain the importance of family. But what family really allows this? An amazing scene.
Hes right about the family thing. The people who are forever talking about 'family' use it to manipulate and silence family members. Without family you have everybody else in the world to choose to be friends with.
It's not black and white. She didn't do it for the lifestyle, she was actually raising points she believed in. :/ The things McNulty said hurt her because there's two sides to this story, and while she's protecting the family, she's hurting her child.
@@Kingbossdon I knew that episode 1.... I think Avon knew in his heart too.... But in the end...he didn't see no other way right....so he followed right along .....
He would have survived of he just let the Wallace thing go. But in parallel, D himself told Wallace to let go of the murder of Brandon and Wallace drove himself crazy over it which caused people not to trust him and eventually murdered. D did the same thing over the murder of Wallace.
Not even close he’d just be another corner boy that would’ve got killed like nothing. If anything, being related to Avon gave him a lot more protection than he deserved
I agree that the lifestyle did draw him in. But he had so much character I gave him a pass. Saying this, I don't discount how Brianna molested his mind from young to make him think that being in the game is part of being a man, being family. Naymond's corrupt mom did the same thing to him. I miss this show.
@@ThePsychic24 b/c he was a thinker. He thought about what it all ment, including his part in it. He did not belive in hurting people unnecessarily just for clout. He had limits. Boundaries. So much so it caused him his life.
i love the parallels in the wire. this was almost namond. if wee-bey didn't let his son go and become something good, he would've been in prison or dead. like namond and wallace, d'angelo wasn't made for the game. he was actually a decent guy forced into a life he didn't want out of familial obligation. d'angelo's mom and namond's mom are identical- married to the life of luxury. willing to sell their sons for wealth. thankfully bunny talked wee-bey into saving his son before it was too late. if only d'angelo and wallace had that chance.
what I don't understand is that why Avon risks everything by still letting D part of the game.. D fucked up multiple times.. he was a risk for the whole Barksdale empire.. if I was a kingpin I would never let my family be part of it.. start legal business and put them in it.. or pay for their education..
D angelo wasn't a decent person. he just comes across as one. But he murdered two people, one an innocent woman and the other some random junkie or drunk who was known for causing trouble at dice games. Compared to the other sociopaths, he just has a bit of a conscience, but that's all.
Craziest part is, Avon would probably have taken the fall for it. The King was the only one who truly loved his heir, everyone else was just using him. I wish there was an alternate timeline where Avon, Slim and Bodie were running Barksdale with Cutty and D working a gym where Wallace and Namond trained.
@@lioness-sx6fr He wouldn't have, and he _couldn't_ have. D was driving the car - Avon can't just waltz in and say, "no, but it was really me that was driving." Maybe D gets a plea deal for giving up Avon, but the law isn't going to do an even swap. They'll still put D on probation, so he still takes a fraction of what he had coming, meanwhile they'll get their full pound of flesh - and _then_ some - from Avon. Plus, even if D was ready to head the crew, they'll use his probationary status as an additional tool to use to bring down the whole thing. "You know he _will,"_ just fits the standard narrative about "family," and Breanna is just saying the first thing that comes to her mind.
D is ungrateful and spoiled here. Avon killed civilians to save D from that stupid body he caught. Then because Avon saved D, they were now on the police's radar.
Avon, unlike D, would have done the years. All Avon really cared about was his rep (Stringer was more into making it rain and buying things). Plus Avon would have it ok in prison, nobody would have messed with him plus he could play video games and eat junk food.
Only worried about herself. She knows that D'Angelo is in a position to cut a deal to allow quite a few people into Witsec in return for flipping on Avon and Stringer. But then she'd have to actually get a job.
Before you feel sad for Dangelo just think about it he’s the reason the whole organization got hot in the first place, he K.ILLED a guy and his uncle who he talking about had to k.ll witnesses to keep him out of jail 🤦🏾♂️!! He wants to snitch now he got caught when he could’ve walked away from the game at anytime and Avon would’ve let him so don’t feel sorry for him bcuz he got caught
This scene is so uncomfortable to watch. D’Angelo’s life was ended when his mother convinced him to take a jail sentence over starting again with a clean slate. Everything that happened after this meeting was just a prolonged execution until he breathed his last.
@@stillcold yeah i don't think alot of people in this comment section realized the life he was signing up for. You lock up your entire family and friends and never see your son again just to do what exactly? work at Wal Mart in arizona?. They could have gotten him out even sooner but he wanted to be hard headed
@@stillcold D'Angelo could have tried. He might have survived and started a new life. Maybe he could have acquired some joint custody once he got his life back on track? Who knows. But he didn't have to die like this.
I agree somewhat. He absolutely could have gotten out earlier than what he did. I think part of it tho is he got used to the lifestyle he was being accorded. That can trap anyone and before they know it its too late.
If you're in a situation where you don't have a degree, there are no well paying jobs and you can walk out to a corner, do a couple of hours of work and come home with a fat wallet, it's got to be hard to walk away from it.
Imo the only thing that kept D’Angelo from turning was that Brianna mentioned his son. He didn’t want his son to grow up into the game like he did. If he turned he would have to leave his son. If he stayed and took the years, he could get out and be a good influence on his son
This is how it works, you have to understand the history of drug gangs an family. It’s a form of “ cosa nostra” but different yes, loyalty an honor an you never ever tell anyone the inner workings of your organization
Outside of Andre Royo (Bubbles), I cannot think of an actor who brought more to his character than Larry Gilliard Jr. They are so much nuance and depth and pain.
I know people love ripping on Brianna and rightly so but what happened to D goes beyond just Brianna. It's the Barksdales, including Avon and especially that snake Stringer, and the system as a whole that forces people to turn to crime to live and good-natured people like Wallace and D get shafted.
D'angelo was quick to forget that it was his family that pulled strings to help him beat that case in ep 1 after a witness pointed him out in court. Man was ready to snitch on the whole fam & leave everybody behind, including his own son before Brianna made a clutch play for the Barksdale organisation. & why he snitch on wee-bey? that shit wasn't right
The point was that he was in that situation because of his family to begin with. Here he sees a chance to break away from the life, but as you said it meant leaving everyone behind. Though I do believe that he is not responsible for the choices that they made and benefitted from, and so he owes them less than what you argued.
i don't feel completely bad because i know others missed the boat with me when this show first aired but damn seeing these clips over the years make me particularly realize in this age of junk TV this was more then something special
Brianna was one of the best characters, portrayed masterfully by Hyatt. What a mess of rationalization and manipulation she was - and in the end it absolutely destroys her.
This is literally the only scene ive seen where i’ve wanted to slap the shit out of everyone commenting i mean you can be a surface level thinker and blame his mom and call her trash but wtf About D himself? Like she said without the game their family would be in the pit living off scraps D’s whole entire life he benefited from “the game” not to mention he killed Someone! And over something that had nothing to do with the game and he was freed because of his uncle There’s absolutely no justification for D snitching And on his own flesh and blood at that! His mom did exactly what she was suppose too, him taking those years isnt what got him killed avon was gonna get him free using those prison deaths just like he did for himself and D refused! His disloyalty and unpredictability got him killed D got everything he deserved
Any real mother would have encouraged their son to take the deal. Hell, even D’s girlfriend supported his decision. Not to mention that D’Angelo was all for Wallace quitting when he said that he wanted out.
@@jayteegamble Wee Bey was faced with a similar decision as Breanna, and he made the right choice. He'll never see his son again, but he let Namond go to a better life than he got.
If he would have taken any deal... they would've backed door him and put conspiracies charges on anyone accociated with Barksdale ; including him mom. Damn if you do.. damn if you don't. He wanted part of the game and ended up with the whole thing
"this right here is part of the game D" Such perfect dialogue; from that moment on she tries to play him with her words and without replying he knows it's all nothing but the lifestyle for her. My god this show is immaculate.
She knows damn well Avon would not have taken the weight for D'Angelo. And in the previous scene she says she'll go talk to him after she gets with Roberto. So she put getting the product above seeing her son
I don't know what is sadder that she tried to protect his son and lifestyle or that she is so fucking blind to see that his own son is suffering the consecuences of the family business.
I can’t fully blame Brianna. She had a choice to make between her son and her whole family…. Their family would be vulnerable and destroyed if Avon got locked up and D disappeared. D had to step up and take one for his family.
She made him take the years but I think deep dwn she knew Avon had something up his sleeve to get out & D would've been with him if he went along with the play up at Jessup but D choose to stand on his own
Family and business were the same thing to her. Claiming that without the game, they’ll be living off scraps. She’s so programmed in the life, but not her son.
I love this scene! One of my absolute favorites! D'Angelo was so upset with Avon that he forgot about everyone it effects for the price of his freedom. Brianna is so on point with everything she says. She reminds D that Avon is a stand-up dude and he'll take the charge if needs be but that would mean D would have to be at the Head of the Table to which we all know he wasn't ready for. In an attempt to get back at his Uncle, it's so cool that Brianna not only reminds D'Angelo that it effects the entire family, but also that getting caught and doing time is also apart of the game whether you like it or not. Not only that but she schools him on the fact that if not for the game, everything they have now would never have been. Some might think it's fucked up to think Brianna had to remind D about his own child, but when you're only focused on one side of the situation, you miss all the repercussions. Two of the most realest lines said in this scene come from Brianna... "Start over, huh? How the fuck you gown start over wit'out ya peoples? Wit'out ya own child, even?" "You ain't got family in this world, what the hell you got?"
G-GOD-C it's his family that got him killed. His family trusted stringer. His mother wanted the money more than her own son's well being. People who try to twist your arm with loyalty and family won't stand there for you. Avon was respectable. His mother was not n
She only cares about the lifestyle not D at all. Stringer used that to her to sell out her own son. And she did. Why want your son to stay in jail then get out of the game.
