Part 10 of The X-Trail Files.
In this video, I demonstrate how to remove and refit the upper glovebox unit on a T30 Nissan X-Trail DCi Sport.
Couple of things to be aware of when removing and refitting. The plastic hinge mechanism of the upper glovebox can fatigue and start cracking to the point where the lid goes all wobbly and loose. Big thanks to fellow RU-vidr Andy Dolphin for warning me about potential of hinge failure. Wasn't aware of this weakness until he mentioned it. Glad he did though.
The hinges are spring-loaded so it stays upright when open, however if these springs/hinges get stiff, extra stress is placed upon the plastic surrounding the hinge mounts. As you'll see in the video, my hinges are starting to display fatigue cracks. I'll have to reinforce this area with glass matt and resin or maybe glass matting and two part epoxy putty - so long as there are no clearance issues between hinges and surrounding dashboard assembly.
Second item to be aware of is the metal reinforcement strip between upper and lower glovebox sections can slip out of alignment so the screw holes don't align up. This is what I discovered when I realised my upper glovebox unit wasn't attached to anything. Turns out it's been off before for some electrical work (before I bought the car) but not fitted properly.

So glad this video is on RU-vid, my upper glove box hinges have broken off and now I know I can remove the whole assembly and replace it !

Many thanks, unfortunately I haven't as my one was replaced free of charge by Nissan dealership due to the worldwide Takata airbag recall on Nissan and some Toyota vehicles. Car was with them for hour and 30mins so I assume they removed the lower and upper glovebox units and unscrewed the airbag from inside after safety precautions such as disconnecting car battery and allowing firing capacitors to discharge before going near it.

How did you remove the old Sat nav DVD player from the top glove box?

It never had one. Satnav dvd unit was only optional on DCi Sport trim spec. Probably just as well because it's a bit dated and slow compared to TomTom satnav units.

Is this a T30 face lift? I have a T30 but my interior looks very different. I presume this is more updated?

Yes - the earlier T30's had a push switch selector for the 4x4 Auto and 4x4 Lock modes and some differences to the dashboard storage bins.

Hi, no heat output can be caused by; Coolant level too low so airlock/trapped air in heater matrix and supply & return pipes. Heater flap door not opening due to flap motor or linkage fault. Heater control not working. Thermostat stuck open so engine running too cool. With engine warmed up, carefully check temperature of the heater matrix supply and return pipes behind engine at bulkhead. Supply pipe should be hotter than return pipe. Don't want to worry you but the HVAC system (heating ventilation air conditioning) on the T30 Xtrail is complex because all electrical systems run on CANBUS multiplexed wiring with each component using dedicated modules and sensors. There is a PDF workshop manual that runs to 164 pages and has a diagnostic test check list. The Xtrail UK Facebook group has the pdf files and it's called 'ATC Automatic air conditioning. E-manuals online will also have the workshop manuals.

I miss my Audi Coupe GT and Audi 80 2.0E. both had that 'hewn from solid' build quality that Nissan simply doesn't have. Having said that, the Xtrail still doesn't creak or squeak despite 150k miles.

Will a 2003 reg Nissan Xtrail have this? If so, I didn't have a clue and I have owned mine since July and lived in it for over 4 months and never noticed!

@@TK42138No, todos no lo tenían del lado del compañero ... el primer Xtrail 2001 -> 2003 no lo tenía, fue a partir de esa fecha cuando empezaron a tenerlo (2ª generación).

The opening mechanism for the top cover is very sticky even with using wd40..it just wont work....its just driving me crazy

It was a USB phone charger that plugged into 12v aux socket. The upper glovebox is very small and it doesn't lock so I just keep a phone cable or a torch in there.

My upper glove box is on the right hand side. Behind the steering wheel. Not on the passenger side

I've got rattle coming in from the passenger airbag.... When I press on it during travel the rattle stops... Any ideas?

Check the top storage and lower glovebox internal mouldings to see if they are loose. The T30 Xtrail passenger airbag was subject to a recall due to faulty airbag units and are being replaced free of charge. If yours has been replaced, maybe the garage didn't secure surrounding trim properly?

@@TK42138 I do not know if it was replaced.... I bought an 05 plate recently and it just rattles... Thinking of disassembling and removing the noise somehow... Any diagrams?

When I press on the airbag cover the rattling sound dampens.... That's how I decided this is the culprit...
