The greatest ass kicking in all of film is not in a martial arts movie or a superhero movie, it's completely verbal and it's at the end of There Will Be Blood.
This movie is a fucking master character piece. I remember watching this when it first came out. I kept waiting for Daniel to have some kind of redeeming quality but NOPE!!!!!!
I love how giddy you were about this movie. I saw it in theaters when I was 17 years old. Blew my mind. All the performances, the editing, the music (Prospectors Quartet is one of my all time favorite pieces of music). This is my all time favorite film for sure. 2007 was a ridiculous year for film. Anyways, that was fun to see your reaction!
@@mwilsonUT Definitely. Zodiac, The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford, Hot Fuzz, Death Proof, American Gangster, Before the Devil knows your dead, Ratatouille, Eastern Promises, and of course the aforementioned two
Fun fact: both films were made in Marfa, Texas and the oil fire smoke in There Will Be Blood, smoked out the set and closed a day of shooting for No Country For Old Men. 2 masterpieces made next to each other. Amazing year of cinema.
Jimmy- right there with you. I watch this and find myself not blinking just staring in awe at DDL’s character. It’s insane on a level I don’t think I’ve seen in anything else. Just an incredible performance.
He killed the guy pretending to be his brother because the one person that he felt he could actually open up to a bit turned out to be an imposter. I mean it's obviously not a reasonable thing to do, but Plainview isn't exactly a reasonable man.
I watched this 3 times in a row in theaters when this first came out, another one that came out that same year that hit me just as hard is No Country for Old Men which I HIGHLY recommend u guys watch, great reaction guys
@@redtailzephier4141 no country somehow feels much longer, not even in a bad way, i watched them both not long ago and there will be blood is probably my favourite movie of all time now
Think about this for a second. This came out the same year as No Country for Old Men, and The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford. Crazy good year.
I'm so glad to see so many people love this movie. When I was 18 i bought this on dvd and none of my friends were into it so I felt like I was sitting on my own private goldmine (or oil well) for years. Jonny Greenwood is an unadulterated genius.
The best movie I've ever seen by far. The acting, cinematography, the character arc of Daniel Plainview, costumes, set design all perfect. To watch Daniel spiral out of control until his greed completely devours him was amazing. And the freaking music score is one of the best I've ever heard. I've seen this movie a dozen times and I will watch it at least a dozen more.
Jimmy I failed you; I know how much you love great antagonistic characters, how could I fail to recommend this masterpiece to you?! Thank you to whomever recommended it and thank you Jimmy for loving it! It was quite an experience in the cinema, let me tell you!!
This movie is....mesmerizing. I care very little about that time period, the subject, the oil industry or anything. However, this film is absolutely mesmerizing. Daniel Day-Lewis absolutely deserved the Academy Award for this film. The acting by Paul Dano makes me think that his role as Riddler in THE BATMAN will be wonderful.
It's funny to me because I love the movie but I did fall asleep the first time I tried to watch it. Was my own fault. Started it at 2-3AM. I think I ended up just starting over completely fresh the next day and it's just a fantastic movie. And, as a soundtrack nerd, Jonny Greenwood got screwed by the Academy with their rules that deemed his score ineligible. Absolutely would have won that year.
It's 'THE father', and I agree it doesn't get much appreciation. Everyone is suggesting Gangs of New York, but no one seems to know of 'In the name...' . I'm glad I found this comment.
For me it all comes down to Daniel Day Lewis' performance. Its just fascinating to watch, I was riveted to the screen first time I saw this film. And honestly, every time after that as well. That said, I'd personally put The Godfather as my number one film of all time.
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE. check out Warrior on HBO Max. fills the gap while waiting for Peaky Blinders quite nicely and has some of really great/ action/fight scenes. created by Jonathan Tropper (Banshee co-creator) and based on an original tv treatment and notes from Bruce Lee.
The reason Plainview is sympathetic is that he has admirable attributes in addition to the fucked up ones. The entire opening sequence (like 25 minutes) is dedicated to showing his ingenuity, drive, work ethic, strength, competitive/industrious nature etc. Its like how people love Steve Jobs even though he was an "asshole" and some people are like "why do people like this jerk?!". The Jobs/Plainview critics are naive and dont understand biology (that there are attributes that are rare and necessary for civilization, and that people in these roles need to be ruthless jerks). People like Plainview have other attributes that the average person doesnt have, and it makes them admirable in a different way.
Jimmy, what's weird is I clicked on this to watch your reaction and early on I was like, "This is going to end up in his top 5 when this is over." I knew Daniel Day's character and the cinematography was going to send you over the moon. Well, it sent you to Mars!!!!!
If Shawshank Redemption or No Country for Old Men isn’t in your top 5....then you haven’t watched Shawshank Redemption or No Country for Old Men! This was a great review of outstanding movie
One of my all-time favorite movies. Absolute fucking masterpiece. One of maybe 5 movies I had the pleasure of watching in theatres and immediately after finishing said "that's an instant classic" (others are No Country for Old Men, Birdman, the Dark Knight, Hero, and the Wrestler). Usually it takes a minute to let shit marinate, but, goddamn, sometimes the performances knock it out of the park with no room for doubt.
You guys would love Gangs of New York, with Daniel Day Lewis - one of his best. Check it out if you haven't already. I also echo No Country for Old Men from one of the other commenters.
One of my all time favorite movies, and for sure imo one of the greatest movies ever made! With also for sure one of the greatest endings in movie history!
Ive watched this movie countless times and broken it down piece by piece, and I never got the sleeping in the gutter symbolism. Great observation, that earned a sub.
I think I've watched this movie more times than any other, and I'll be rewatching it again through the years. Possibly my favorite movie. Sometimes I even rewatch it just to hear the film score. Here's a suggestion for another movie with Daniel Day Lewis; "Gangs of New York".
My favorite Daniel Day-Lewis performance is 'In the Name of the Father' (1993), also one of my favorite movies of all time. Paul Dano is an incredible actor, still have to watch one of his movies 'L.I.E.' (2001) with another amazing actor Brian Cox. Years later they made together another movie, 'The Good Heart' (2009). Paul Thomas Anderson is (of course) one of my favorite directors, 'Hard Eight' (a.k.a. 'Sydney'), 'Boogie Nights' (also in my top 10), 'Magnolia', 'Punch-Drunk Love', ' The Master', 'Inherent Vice' (needs multiple viewings before you're really gonna dig it, well, I did), and his last one I haven't watch it yet (got it in my collection tho) 'Phantom Thread' are all recommended, especially 'Boogie Nights' (about the 1970s and early 80s porn movie industry) and 'The Master' (obviously based on the origin of the Scientology Church), 'Magnolia' is also (although they're all) amazing!
this movie has one of the greatest last lines ever, even if its a little corny, its a cartoon like the rest of the movie "I'm Finished!" I saw this in the theater and HA!'d out loud. this was a great year for movies. No Country For Old Men is another standout. funny that this was just before the 2008 collapse
Supposedly they cast another actor as Eli, but he was too intimidated by DDL's completely off-the-wall performance and it didn't work. So they found Paul Dano, who gives as good as he gets.
So simple yet so intense & unique & interesting & no cgi or huge action scenes cuz it feels so real & done with acting & just dialogue for 90% of the film..... Folks wish they could think this shit up 💯
This is one hell of a movie. I am a big western movie fan...this isn’t exactly a cowboy type movie, but late 1800s and early 1900s was still an interesting time!
This film is a masterpiece. Some people fall asleep watching this, some people fall asleep watching Sex and the City :) This has depth. I was loving the soundtrack when I first saw it, wasn't until way later I found out it was Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, which makes sense coz that's my favorite band! They did such a great job, directing, acting, writing. Check out Phantom Thread for the same Paul Thomas Anderson / Daniel Day-Lewis powerhouse, another amazing film.
The novel this was based on, "Oil!", is by Upton Sinclair, a famous American socialist best known for his other novel, "The Jungle", which caused so much public outcry at its depiction of conditions in meatpacking plants-based on (effectively) investigative journalism on Sinclair's part-that it inspired the passage of the Food and Drug Act and the creation of the FDA to enforce it. It's been said that he aimed at America's heart and hit its stomach. The film is amazing, and Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano are both incredible; I've rarely seen such a realistic and believable depiction of psychopathy/narcissism in film. The political subtext of the capitalist robber baron being an irredeemable monster isn't bad, either. For what it's worth, I think the intended target was John D. Rockefeller more than anyone else, but astute comparisons nevertheless.
The movie is the chip. Jimmy is the salsa. And, Cash is the insane amount of salt I throw on every chip. Love your reactions, keep on rockin. Looking forward to the heart disease.
Another great movie from 2007 I think you guys would enjoy is Into the Wild (based on the book of the same name), which was directed by Sean Penn and tells the true story of Christopher McCandless.
lol that Owen Hart reference, but yeah, Vince is nuts - at the very least he helped Snuka cover up a murder Anyways I fucking love this movie and was shocked to see a reaction to it, one of my favourite performances ever by DDL, my friends and I have quoted this movie to each other since it came out, happy you liked it as much as I did
my left foot,GANGS OF NEW YORK,THE LAST MOHICAN,THERE WILL BE BLOOD,LINCOLN, QUALITY OVER QUANITITY, MY KEYBOARD IS MISSING KEYS AND STUCK ON CAPS LOCK...
What a delightful surprise. There Will Be Blood is a great movie. Daniel Plainview is a terrible person but, as you mentioned, Jimmy, he is also fascinating to watch.
Daniel Day-Lewis always wins because he’s absolutely amazing. The only time I didn’t think it was deserved was when his role as Lincoln beat Joaquin Phoenix in The Master(another Paul Thomas Anderson movie). Personal opinion. Phoenix is AMAZING in that movie. You should watch it. Philip Seymour Hoffman Is also unreal. If you liked the music here the same composer did the soundtrack for The Master.
This is a complex film, with complex characters in it. It is no surprise that Daniel Day Lewis decided to work in this film, despite the fact that it was very different from the types of roles he had portrayed in the past. It was a real acting challenge for him to work on this film, and I get the impression that he enjoyed the challenging work.
