I have really developed a true distain for those white moths that lay those eggs on the brassicas! I’m definitely going to invest in screen material and build some covers that are mobile but sturdier than the netting for the brassicas next year.

When I use frost cloth or netting, I use mini binder clips and place them on the wires. They hold really well. My nemesis this fall is aphids. I hear people talk about them but they have never been a problem until now. And oh boy is it a bad infestation.

I lost so many brassicas to these caterpillars too! I started using floating row covers like these and finally having success with my fall brassicas.

They are eating my houseplants that I have on my porch, UP!! Talking about being irritated 😠!! Lol. I sat on my steps when it was getting dark, and watched 2 moths fly around. I finally got my BT out! Wish me luck!

In almost every video I watch from you and Roots & Refuge...there is always something that you guys use/do where I'm like "now why didn't I think of that?!" Those clamps you used. I've been getting real creative trying to figure out how to tuck my netting into the dirt on the side and have it stay when I can just clamp them to the cinder blocks. Haha. Thanks!

I feel your pain. I have lost three quarters of my fall crops due to those little stinkers. We has a medical emergency in the family so I couldn't get out to the garden. Oh well, will try again in the spring. Glad you can save some

I learned that if you till your raised beds in early spring you can get rid of tomato hornworm eggs and other moth eggs. I’m going to try it for next year because I had so many horn worms.

The Rusted Garden suggested a neem + dish soap soak. mix up in watering can or water gallon container so you can shake up .Use the entire Gallon on a area or container garden that you have pulled. You can do this in the spring. Wait a couple weeks before planting

I wish I could show you a picture of this, I grew borage for the first time this year and I didn’t know that they get tall and flop over and there’s some hanging right over a couple kale plants and of a few of my collard greens and those plants are not being eaten at all, I guess the moth’s don’t like it🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t have the flowers in my middle garden and those ones will get destroyed if I don’t go out there every day, the same with my new plot I have greens over there and they get eaten. I’m definitely going to get some netting for next year though, I want a whole raised bed completely covered with greens in it! I also didn’t realize how many plants I needed to be able to feed 7 people lol

Last year I only hand picked and it was discouraging. So this year I sprayed Monterey BT at the FIRST sign and sprayed on a schedule after that. It worked. I only saw two caterpillars all summer. My next problem to get ahead of is spider mites, ugh. 😔

This is THE FIRST YEAR that I might actually get brassicas because of those worms! I found netting to go over my brassica area. If you are going to put them in the high tunnel, maybe you could put up netting on the sides next year. Thanks! Oops...just got to that part in your video.😂

Jill, I have read that planting a trap crop of mustards some distance away from your brassicas, like outside your tunnel, will attract the cabbage butterfly/moth more that your prize crops. As a plus, the caterpillars won't live long enough on the mustard to complete their life cycle.

Oh My goodness they got my radish container. I should have been spraying with neem & peppermint dish soap. I had to hand pick.those buggers off & squish them. Im so mad at those bugs.

Was it the Cabbage moth that laid eggs and had it's young chomp away on new sprouts ? We need to get the egg off before it hatches. There are a lot of Cabbage looper moths here as well as cut-worms...SOOOO frustrating to find precious sprouts be-headed.

I normally spray water with a few drops of peppermint oil around the plants. It wouldn't do any harm to animals and it's organic pest control. Just don't spray the leaves as the oil could burn in the hot weather. Hannah from uk xxx

Oh, I feel you Jill! Those buggers got every single one of my fall brassica starts this year. And within like 24-36hr of sprouting. Munched down every stinkin' lil' cotyledon almost overnight. I was able to restart some of the kale and kohlrabi, but I didn't have enough time to try again on all the specialty broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage varieties. Had to buy the boring, generic ones from a local nursery to replace them. Bt'ed the crap out of them as soon as I got home and put them straight under insect netting... Burn me once, shame on them. 🐛 Burn me twice, oh no no no! Still fighting off the white flies as well. Let me know if you've got any tips for those other than a good ol' peppermint oil and castille soap spray.

The hoops for the bug netting have also been very handy for some of our late summer heatwaves. Let's me throw a bit of shade cloth over the fall/winter starts if needed, make sure they don't get too dried out or bolt prematurely.

I feel ya!!! Here in Middle Tennessee Mother Nature decided to have a heat wave. I haven't planted my brassica transplants yet but I'm definitely covering them when I do until the pest pressure goes away. Mine are going in the ground. My transplants are in the shade right now. I went through this same thing in the Spring because it got warm. Please Lord Jesus....I want some brassicas!!!! I'm feeling ya. Good luck to us all 🙏🙏🙏

I'm struggling with pickle worms and such with all my veggies.... so for the fall garden I am going to inject BT into the plants near the base. In FL 9b our bugs never ever go away. I continue to hand pick, squash and cover but the injection of BT will help because the worms eat leaves and lose their appetite and starve.

I did not know what to use so I tried hand picking but never could get ahead of it. I have been making a lot of baby food for my granddaughter to be and refuse to use any chemicals on my garden.

Bacillus thuringiensis, BT, is a species of bacteria that lives in soil. It makes proteins that are toxic to some insects when eaten, but not others. The proteins are not toxic to humans because, like all mammals, we cannot activate them. Bt is also not toxic to non-target wildlife. Works on all the my caterpillars so far. Hope this helps. You're doing a great thing for your granddaughter.

here in Europe we always net the kohlrabi, broccoli, cabbage etc. so the caterpillars don't stand a chance.

I have been hand picking twice a day and now I only find 1-2 caterpillars a day over three 3x12ft raised beds. I plan to continue this. In your experience, do you think this diligence could possibly be enough? I’m finding less and less damage. I guess my question really is, when I have a beautiful head of cabbage with no exterior damage, is it probable they could be living inside eating from the inside out and I wouldn’t know it? I know it’s always possible. I always planted brassicas in my spring garden so never got a harvest due to heat. This yr they’re in my fall garden and are doing great. I have high hopes!
