They Lost An Instrument During My Lung Surgery (not a joke) 

Honestly, I would hire an attorney at this point. It becomes to the point. Enough is enough. What u r going through is a tumultuous round of medical negligence and they r taking advantage of you. And in the medical world, it's just NOT OK. They need to be held liable, because they will continue to display poor care if not intervened. I wish u all the best and wish I could give u so many hugs right now. I'm rooting for u to return to a 100% healthy life. U deserve it! Also. Many prayers, u r one kick a** fighting woman, cheers!

I would absolutely get a picture of the “part” that might be in your body. Including a description of the dimensions and what material(s) it is made of. Before you have an MRI, make sure the technician or your doctor gives you WRITTEN confirmation that this “part” won’t cause you any harm! And in the US, this would be cause for a lawsuit, and would be settled out of court for probably a pretty big amount. So sorry this happened to you!

That happens in the US and it is called a “Never Event” so it is a very serious issue. But the fact that they recognize that this happened is a good thing. and that they informed you is a good thing. They did everything they could to find it.

One thing which I do hope the hospital warned you about is to make sure that you see the doctor if you have any unexplained fevers, because that instrument can act as a "reservoir" of infection, even if it's many years out. Just trying to help you keep safe. I have everything crossed for you, as always! x

Hang in there Romee. I’ve been there. It seems like you get pummeled left and right, procedure after procedure, multiple surgeries, scans, side effects, mental health issues (totally to be expected!) and it feels like Murphy’s Law so all you can do is laugh. You’re an incredible person with an amazing attitude. This looks like a wonderful day full of some much needed normal things. Your apartment is beautiful! 💕

I’m so sorry this is happening to you! My dad had a sponge left in him during a quadruple bypass surgery. It caused havoc in his chest and they ended up having to open him back up to retrieve it. I think I’d demand an mri to find the darn thing. This is so unacceptable! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

eh as an MRI technologist, I don't know that I agree. A microscopic piece of metal can cause a complication within the body in a magnet field such as an MRI. There has been study after study after study on this. I would ask for a second opinion before ever getting an MRI

A dear friend went through having a tool left in her, during surgery. She endured having it in her for months, and the stuff it did to her body was a nightmare... made her very, very sick. :(

I'm literally a minute in and I just wanna say, I think your hair is really adorable, and you are probably breaking out from stress!!! That hospital has really put you thru it and then some. Honestly, even for my family and I, it feels like its been an endless line of one bad thing after another lately. It will get better. There's nowhere to go but up. Humor - My husband and I find humor in even the darkest moments. It’s bonding to find the ridiculous in good/bad/odd moments. Lots of inside jokes. Seeing something that you just know your partner will laugh about, and then take a quick look at each other and try hard not to laugh because it would be inappropriate at that moment. That’s love.

The same thing happened to my Dad during his prostate surgery (Canada). They couldn't account for an instrument piece and had to call him back for an X-ray. They didn't find anything on the x-ray, and so the instrument was just never found. This was 10 yrs ago, and he hasn't had any issues, but it's still pretty crazy stuff.

As a nurse please please please advocate for yourself as much as you can. The medical system every where is completely broken. Keep fighting beautiful 💕

What happened to you, kind of happened to me. I'm in the US & had my gallbladder removed 7 years ago. The surgery seemed to go smoothly. No one talked to me about a missing instrument or anything. About 6 months later, I get a call from some higher up @ the hospital telling me that there was a surgical instrument unaccounted for from the surgery before mine. They had no clue what happened to it. The possibility of it being used in my surgery was low, but they couldn't rule it out. So I had to go through 1 year of testing for Aids, hepatitis & something else. This person seemed like she wanted to do anything I asked. Probably because they potentially had a huge lawsuit on their hands. But the year went by & I remained clear. Thank God! I understand how you felt. I have been through so much being chronically ill & then this happened. It was the last time I had surgery @ that hospital. It wasn't my 1st rodeo with them, but it seemed to get worse each time. I love your pixie cut as your hair grows out. If you get a fever or suddenly sick make sure your doctor knows you could have something in you. Glad you had a very productive day.

Both my mother and my aunt have experienced that the doctors lost something inside them during surgery (in Norway). With my mother they found out at once after, but they actually needed to cut her open to manage get it out. With my aunt it took some time (days) until they noticed because she became really ill and it took her a long time to recover. It wasn't instruments, but something like pads (compressors?) or tampons (I don't know the english terms).

Open, honest communication in a respectful way. I don’t keep secrets, I expect the same from my partner BECAUSE if you never talk about your feelings and problems, how do you expect anything to get solved?

The doctor likely wasn't laughing at the Grey's Anatomy joke bc he knows there's viable grounds for you to sue...which I hope you do -- or at least consider it. Also, your short hair looks SO good on you!!!!! omg

You need to sue! I work with attorneys and unfortunately this happens! I have been involved in countless lawsuits for this!

You have more patience with your hospital than I could have! Your simply amazing! I am a lot of years older than you are and yet your teaching me! I want to have your patience and a better attitude! I caught myself just a little while ago when I was getting frustrated thinking if Romee can do all she does and still smile, then I can certainly find my smile and handle my frustration a little better! They took the xray to see if they could detect the piece of instrument, which means that the instrument will be radiopaque (very white on an xray). Generally this would have shown up very clearly on the xray of your body. I'm assuming the only reason why they even informed you is because they couldn't find it on the floor/theatre bed and it is protocol, not because they actually think it might be inside of your body. We have all lost a little butterfly from an earring stud or whatever if it falls on the floor, it is easy to loose small things that fall and roll away. If it was inside of you it would have shown on the xray, and if it something that isn't visible on xrays then they wouldn't even have bothered to take the xray. Hope this makes sense and gives you some peace of mind about it.

"The best disinfectant is sunshine." Like the line from the book/movie "The Hospital": "Where did you train your nurses? Daucau?? It's that bad. Letting the present and future patients who depend on that hospital know what happened--and could happen to them--is the best way to put the people responsible for this hospital on notice. The problems you have experienced involve multiple departments. None of this is rare here--it is how the function on a daily basis. It is systemic. Here the press would be working on an expose and the lawyers would be advertising for others who have been harmed so they could file class action lawsuits.

To answer your question "What is important for you in a relationship" I say: Communication, Trust and Complicity. Not sure the last word translates well from french to english but in the sense I mean it, it's about being on the same page in general. Same place in personal growth, same sense of humor or one that matches well with the other, having this kind of best friend vibe with your significant other most of the time, etc. The point you brought to the table "Boundaries" is very right too. Respect and understanding of the boundaries is absolutely a must.

Hi Romy, I worked in the OR and ER for a major hospital here in the States. Let me tell you - losing instruments and sponges (used to soak up blood inside your body cavity when they're operating) is VERY COMMON. There are a lot of lawsuits here around that because it is a form of medical malpractice (the technicians are supposed to do a count before and after surgery to account for EVERYTHING used during the surgery (they also charge based on this). If the count is off, then guess what - they left it in you. And they should have known before closing you up.

I have a clip left over from when I had my cancer surgery. I didn’t find out until many years later. You can actually see it on an x-ray, and I have always mentioned it when I have an MRI, but it’s been many many years and I haven’t had any trouble.

Im 33 and have stage 4 CLL..And I just got into a relationship that is now pretty serious and I realize i needed someone who listens to me.Truly listens especially being sick so i find that has been a pretty important factor in our relationship.
