When a piece of clothing doesn't feel right, it really doesn't matter how good others think it looks. The color of the sweater surprised me most because on my screen, it is a rich, caramel color.

minkie , I agree regarding feeling good on something. There were occasions where people tell me that something really look great on me but I just didn’t feel right and therefore when one doesn’t feel right one loses one’s overall confidence.

I thought something was wrong with either my phone or my eyes! The colour, 'orange' to me represents the fruit 🍊! However, the sweater does have undertones of burnt orange perhaps.

I always feel so guilty when I buy a piece of clothing or shoes, and then don't wear them. Even if it's inexpensive, I feel badly. It's good to know that everyone seems to make purchases that sometimes don't work.

Yes! People always talk about things they spent too much money on and don't wear as a mistake, but I feel just as bad about the inexpensive items. I have purchases so much stuff from the clearance rack because it was such a good deal. But how foolish if I only wear them once or twice. Live and learn.

I refer to this as "the lure of beautiful items." All too often I have been sucked in by a gorgeous fabric or jewelry design, only to find later that (as Audrey says) the item doesn't play well with anything else in my wardrobe. Still trying to find that balance between statement/boring.

Autumn Mancuso I try to wear everything at least once before donating it. What I have trouble with is loving that Cape Cod type blue striped sweater dress that is just too warm to wear in the summer...have two or three. Medium knit in a summer theme only works if you go boating. They are now in the donation bag.

@@tonpap Goodness, you are so right! I am the same. I love that military green color but it looks horrid on me. Not only am I a winter, but I'm a deep winter, which I think is limiting in terms of colors that look good on me. I love pastels but if they are not icy, I can't wear them. And it's hard to find icy. I can't wear jewel tones- they make me look like I'm trying too hard. I wear a lot of black (it's really my favorite), white, & navy.

So true, Mary. I am older, love unique, interesting, well-fitting, eye-catching stuff (oversize pants and huge earrings for sure). Great video! There are many regret purchases in my past. The key is to purge these items and move on, without being hard on ourselves. I consider these purchases a "sunk cost" which helps me get over it quickly. And Goodwill benefits from these cast-offs. I will often look at sale prices on designer goods and then take a step back and ask myself if I'd still like it if it were made by an unknown designer. It keeps me honest/humble. Just because the price is amazing doesn't mean that we should go for it! And that doesn't only go for designer goods, but for fantastic fabrics (silk, etc.) that are the wrong color or shape.

Hi Audrey! I case you are looking for video suggestions - I would love to hear more about olive skin tone and how to work with it! I didn't find enough meaningful information on the web, and I really love how you explain concepts, so I think me and other people with olive skin would greatly benefit from you sharing your knowledge. You already saved me a lot of money and effort by telling that one can have pale, but yellowish skin with cool/neutral undertone, and I had that "Aha! That's why I don't look good in orange, warm beige, but do look good in ivory and cool green, no matter that my skin definitely has a yellow overtone". Thank you!

Thank you for this very honest video! I feel frustrated when I see intentional, ethical, curated, sustainable, etc. bloggers gush so much about a new purchase, but then the item is never to be seen or heard of again in future posts! This was refreshing to see you as a blogger be totally open about mistaken purchases and how you parted with them in a thoughtful, non wasteful way. I also enjoyed your discussion of admiring something that someone else is wearing, but realizing it may not fit in with your unique personal style- and that’s ok! One thing I’ve learned on my own personal style journey is the need to see the difference between something I appreciate about what someone else is wearing versus what I would actually wear myself. I now view seeing other’s style in the same way I view art- I can enjoy many pieces of art in a museum, but I wouldn’t hang every piece in my home.

personal style always evolves, fortunately and unfortunately! two years ago I thought I figured out a "foolproof" guide of what I liked and looked good on me. looking at those items I bought now, I realize I don't like 80% of those things anymore, and I've switched to prefer silver over gold. Same with the sunglasses - the shape is perfect for you - and I can't see what is wrong with them - but if you don't feel good about them, I understand. Audrey has a capsule wardrobe and practices thoughtful purchasing, so I don't know that "shopping for fun" makes sense in this case, as often those purchases aren't consistent with her lifestyle and will likely result in more regretted purchases, since fun purchases typically aren't made thoughtfully. I don't recall if her motivation is for sustainability/ethical reasons or more personal/financial reasons, but I do know she promotes a "thoughtful purchasing" mindset, so I thought I would chime in here. Also, I agree with you and everyone else, the sweater looked closer to dark caramel or maybe a more subtle burnt orange(?) on my screen.

What do you mean buying for fun though? I for example consider it fun and great if I buy something I need and I like and which looks good on me at the same time. Sometimes I would buy things I don't really need, but I still think a lot before my purchase, like how much I like it, how good does it look on me and where would I wear it. Otherwise it doesn't make sense at all for me to spend money on it. I'm not a millionare lol.

I loved hearing what your personal misses were. I’m the same in that my hopes for all things I buy will last forever or get worn for years to come but I’ve also learned that we can just never know! I have pieces I swore would add value to my wardrobe and literally never get worn because I’m not being quite honest with myself or didn’t realize it wouldn’t work with my style-but again I wouldn’t have learned that lesson as well if I didn’t get that item. Being as intentional as we can definitely helps keeps waste low even if not all pieces make the cut! You are right that not all is lost. If anything our wardrobe misses teach us something and make even better decisions later! Thanks for the great video!

Hi Audrey, I just wanted to let you know that I love your style and you have been a big inspiration to me. Where have you been all my life! My clothing waste has plummeted since watching you and I have learned how to purchase quality used clothing that would have been way out of my budget before.

Always love your videos, they're so simple but also so deeply informative, you just make such pleasing videos! I also have to say what a big inspiration a lot of videos about looking what you already have in your closet have been for me. I recently made jean purchases, a medium wash and a white pair and the amount of combos I've found using those new pants and shirts (and jackets) I already had is kind of amazing. Just off the top of my head, 5 or 6 shirts that either I wore but looked plain in, or barely wore at all are now CORE pieces!

Thanks for the learnings Audrey. The hardest thing is having regrets about purchases and then not being able to part with them because we keep on going through our mind how much money and time we have spent on those items . I have to keep on reminding myself that those unworn items may be appreciated by others. Regret sometimes keeps us from moving forward. I have donated thousands of dollars of clothing, purses and furniture. I also have many working clothes items in my wardrobe which I will be donating to shelters where for example women will be requiring nice clothing to wear to interviews or potential new jobs. Keep safe !

I have so many purchase regrets. I am now seeing the trends in my closet of what I love. Flutter sleeves, puff sleeves, creams, navy, black/grey, emerald green, terracotta, red, earth tones. All of these go well with my Deep Autumn coloring. Thank you Audrey!

As of today, I am a new subscriber to your channel!! First of all, I was searching RU-vid to find ideas about the Cladwell $299.00 course on capsule wardrobes. I found your channel and 100% fell in love with your voice. OMG what a beautiful voice! I watched a video on your skin care routine, another on your perfect hair and makeup routine and one on what you won't wear in 2021. Then I found your blog and e-book on how to build a classic capsule wardrobe and I am 100% hooked! I don't think I will be purchasing that course, instead I will be buying some items suggested in your e-book. Audrey Coyne you are AMAZING! Thank you for so many great tips. I know there are so many more to come. I am so grateful I found you!

How she jumps back and forth between her real voice and her fake video voice is so jarring aha but lord did she ever give me a lot to think about in my wardrobe. I bought similar pants I love the look of that I just have never been able to leave the house in, and she really framed it for me. The waistband! The pockets!!

Preach! I have olive skin and it is so so so hard to figure out colors. I only learned that olive is neutral/cool from your videos and it makes so much sense. I also have noticed that my skin changes in high humidity warmer climates and none of my clothes that I carry to those places work for me and I end up feeling like I have nothing to wear and I have to go buy clothes. Now I get it

I'm lucky to have my mother and sister both of who wear almost the same size clothing and shoes as mine, so whenever I don't fell like wearing something anymore, the size didn't fit or I just don't feel comfortable with it, I just give it to them. And they're happy, especially my sister, haha. I buy mostly second hand, so a returning a purchase is not much of a go for me. I also have been experimenting quite a lot for the last couple of years, a friend of mine gently pushed me to go further and deeper in trying new things, as well, which has been a nice journey for me. Now I definitely know what I love, enjoy and feel comfortable with, only remains to see what else I do not find fit for me and my style. It's always nice to see your videos and recommendations, tho. I discovered you just a couple days go and I find your videos and style lovely. Keep up the good work!

ohhhh i have the same undertone and overtone. makes total sense! 🤯 thank you audrey ❤️ i also bought an orange sweater that i parted ways with. i will wear orange in fall, but combined with plum. for jewelry i can’t wear silver, it just doesn’t suit me -except for my wedding ring and band which is platinum -maybe i should keep the stone and change it to gold one day 😉

I think it's odd that Audrey made a really thoughtful video, with in-depth reflection and analysis about why she chose to let go of these wardrobe pieces after repeatedly trying to make them work, and some people are commenting as if to convince her to keep them 🤔😆
@kati1017
@kati1017 2 года назад
Well maybe with some tweaks she would like them, such as the pants. Maybe a tailor could take them in to make them slimmer for her. People can comment, you know! 🤨

Audrey, this issue is so important!! Just today I filled an entire bag of items I have hardly worn and finally decided to release. It is annoying to waste money and precious resources on these items. This video is so timely because I also did some analysis of where I went wrong. I have come to the conclusion that you shouldn't have to work too hard to make something belong in your wardrobe. There are so many gorgeous pieces out there and you just know when you have hit the jackpot!! I will restrain and be patient until the right item comes along.

I’ve learnt a lot of the same lessons, like you have, through trial and error; and now I’m very careful about what I buy. I love that you’re choosing more feminine silhouette’s, which is much like my style - mostly because my short pear shape is complimented more with floaty dresses and skirts, and I feel so much better when wearing them.
