So to be better, "rural white people", have to support the lie, that cops are out there on a rampage, murdering innocent, unarmed black people? I can speak for a huge majority of Americans when I say, That is never going to happen! If you want to be foolish and believe that lie, which you clearly have done, then do it. Just don't try to tell the rest of us, who have normal functioning brain's, to do the same. It aint gonna happen!

As a white person from the deep south. I know exactly what Tyler is talking about. We know rual people. We know what happens when a person of color wonders off and accidentally finds themselves in a skinhead camp. Why can't we be upset and have feelings about another person being dehumanized...?? Or a mother burying her child?? We are all people. Why are we always so divided. Racism goes both ways. He used his platform for something good. He used a context that people from the south could relate too.

Absolutely man, I'm a dude from Kentucky who looks nearly identical to Tyler and I'm absolutely ashamed of the way people are treated all over this country and the world. There's nothing "woke" about this, it's just decency. Brianna Taylor was murdered right here in our own state it's freaking disgusting. Abuse of power is rampant and Appalachian people have a very tumultuous relationship with authority, which is why he references the battle of Blair mountain. I respect the hell out of Tyler, he knew people who interpret this different ways and he addressed that really clearly in this video haha.

Is it that some people are mad at the wrong people? The wrong people being the ones suffering or being hurt and some killed, instead of the things and the ones bringing it/ causing it. That instead of continuing a long history of violence we should empathize rather than condemn and citicise, thus adding to it. Also, that we, including the appalachian people seen as a group of hillbillies have also suffered at the hands of authorities must also come to realize, and recognize, if they're doing it too (to others) without understanding the causes that provokes it. So, wake up fellow hillbillies don't be blinded by the symptoms without seeing the problem. I suppose. How I wish I could've put in a bumper sticker quote but I can't, OR Could it be, "Empathize before you Criticize" ? Idk...Or maybe, "Recognize the problem, not just the symptoms" ? Seems to me bumper sticker speak reaches the most people, lol I'm sorry but its true. 🙄🙃 Or just maybe when talking about a subject we should learn to speak more plainly or simply and to the point, rather than dancing around it.

Simply put you do not understand his message because it isn’t meant for you to understand. This is no apology. It’s a statement that accompanied the song and a damn good one. He’s giving further context to the song for those who still won’t understand. This was meant for men like my daddy a lifelong Kentuckian who heard the song tapped his foot and managed not to understand a single word. I played him the statement for this reason. It wasn’t long before he was interjecting, disagreeing and even doubting Tyler’s heritage. This is not some half ass attempt at virtue signaling or attempting to appear woke for his audience. His audience DOES NOT want to hear this. This isn’t going to make him any new friends in Appalachia or throughout the Mid nor Deep South. The people of Appalachia needed to hear this. Many need to be reminded of so much. Much more than Tyler even says here. Appalachian people throughout history have had a plight all their own and still do. A plight that most often wasn’t taken in stride. These people have fought for much more than just the confederacy. The heritage of this place and these people is so much deeper than some sad poisonous flag. The things that were handed down to me those that shape me have nothing to do with a flag. They are skills, traditions, songs, stories ect. It’s the beam of pride I see in the eyes of my aunt when I create something tangible with my hands using the skills she taught me. It’s my dad swelling with joy when I would beat all the boys in the shooting match and bring home that turkey. It goes on and on. I don’t take kindly to the “uneducated” comments either though. Intelligence comes in many forms, all of which cannot be obtained in a classroom. They are not too dumb to understand their too bullheaded. He’s speaking in a way and with references they do understand.

As someone from the same place as Tyler his comments are not "woke" in the slightest. His references in his speech and in the song are there to hit a very particular chord with our people, Appalachians. Our heritage is one of being misunderstood and misrepresented and exploited. Several times our people have had to resist, often violently, outside influences from corrupt gov, law enforcement, and bisiness interest because we have no advocates or real voice outside our region. What I believe Tyler was doing is trying to shake the cobwebs off of and light a fire under our people. We're seeing things that if done to one of our own we'd react in a way that would be terrifying, but we see it happen to another misrepresented and exploited group of people and chalk it up to "well they shoulda complied". Its not a "woke" message. But people that are fans of a man singing about the life and pain of eastern ky and Appalachia need to realise theres more of us that come frome heathens, moonshiners, and highwaymen than are fans of a police state our gov interference in any way. People watched a guy get killed over loose cigarette selling.....we went to war with the federal gov over selling untaxed liquor. Much love but its not "woke" its hillbilly as fuck

I'm Appalachian (WNC), I agree. There's always the risk of being a white warrior and appropriating woke culture, or, conversely, of being silent while Black people are denied their rights and murdered. I'ma err on the side of Tyler and Jason Isbell and say something, and if it's wrong I hope Black people will have the energy to call me out. If we can't take that, we're useless. I'm glad Tyler did this and I think he did it well. These are the words some white people have to hear to make the atrocities we're committing against Black, Indigenous, and other people of color stop. There would absolutely be an Appalachian uprising if white mountain folks were treated the way Black Americans are, but, of course, we would not be met with the violence that BLM and Native American protests are because we're white. That means I'm "conjecturin' on matters that I ain't never dreamed in all my born days as a white {woman from Asheville}, based on the way that the world's been to mе"~ Even if our host disagrees, it's his show and I'm thankful for the conversation! Michele
@BostonFenian
@BostonFenian Год назад
Extremely well-said! That is exactly what Tyler is aiming for and what he's been doing for years. He's tryna encourage Appalachia (and beyond) to reconnect with its roots in labor organization and mass workers' solidarity against the bosses and politicians and the cops that protect them and help them exploit all of us. Supporting the movement to protect black lives and resisting police violence is just one part of this, as is combating the drug addiction and abuse epidemic (e.g. "Nose on the Grindstone") plaguing working communities across the country. Reducing all this to something about "wokeness" is immature and trivializes it. This ain't about some stupid social media "culture war", it's about the future of humanity, about taking control of our lives and our society, wresting the economy out of the hands of the bosses who are ruining the planet to line their own pockets and putting it back in our own hands for ourselves and each other.

I wonder if what Tyler is saying is not necessarily for someone who isn’t from eastern ky in the mouth of Appalachia. I’m glad that this seems simple to you, but I believe he may be trying to relate to people who are just uneducated. He’s trying to speak to his hometown…maybe not in terms that appeal to you…call him “woke”…. But he’s got some balls if you ask me to stand up to his community. I have enjoyed your reactions and the way you put yourself into these songs, but I’m very disappointed in you.

You seen not to understand the context of Tyler’s video. He is not apologizing. This is his written statement along with the album and last song, which you also reacted to. The song and this video are a plea to his southern listeners to try and understand where black communities are coming from. Breonna Taylor, a girl from KY, ( also Tyler’s home) was wrongfully killed by police, so you can see why he thought it important to release this album and video. Tyler even mentions in the song and in this video, reminding white southerners of the Battle of Blair Mtn. when police, the National Guard, and the US military killed around 100 mostly white coal miners who were on strike.

I’m sure he pre-wrote this this message so it would be linear. When he says the acts of police violence aren’t being addressed, he is referring to the lack of accountability on a systematic level. It’s not white guilt, it is suggesting people imagine walking in another’s shoe to understand what other people are going through. He is very clearly speaking as an Appalachian man. He is a product of his culture and history. Taking a man into custody is one thing, we have a Constitution for a reason. Read the Bill of Rights it offers protection to those accused of crimes. The police shouldn’t be the judge, jury and executioner. In this country we are assumed innocence until proven guilty. I’m gonna leave it at that- read the Bill of Rights.

He isn't apologizing. I feel like you went into this video with a preconceived notion of what he was going to say. This video was not made as an apology for his song. It was made alongside the song to explain why he wrote it. He is saying that if white rural people had been treated the way that black Americans have that they too would be marching in the streets, protesting the police violence. That those rural white people would grab any weapon that they had and fight against that kind of treatment. You are not making a reaction video here. You are using this as an opportunity to express your personal opinions. You've totally missed his entire message. Also, you keep saying that he has "monitized" this. When it comes to some issues we need to understand we can't throw everyone in the same category. I felt like that happen in his video. Not every cop is bad and every race has issues. But we have to see that we are all apart of the human race and we are responsible for our actions. I will be the first to say I'm not perfect and I've made mistakes. At some point I'm sure we've all stepped in some crap we wished we had taken a different route on. With that being said when we are honest with the situations we come in contact with and communicate better some stuff wouldn't happen. There will always be people who screw up and won't accept they screwed up. I felt he threw every cop down the drain when I saw this video and I can admit I took it personally. Since then I can say this, if he needed my help I would do my best to help him. I'm no leader of a movement. Just an American citizen who doesn't like what I see. Our own people fighting each other when could put our energy bringing ourselves together. I'm sure all the terrorists and groups who want us to do this are having a good time over this. Didn't Covid show us we are in this as a world of citizens? I don't expect things to ever be perfect. Because in my beliefs the Bible tells me things are meant to get worse. Do, tell me what do you feel is the equivalent issue of the American white compared to centuries of violent enslavement, rape and the brutal destruction of families and the selling of their children, institutional racism in all systems like healthcare, and financial systems and morbidly evil justice system that is truly modern day slavery? Come out and say what you mean Tyler. As an artist myself we have to look at our craft and be critical of ourself to make something worth while. We have the ability to see pattern recognition and can see through the BS. This man bent the knee to his handlers and not to his creator.

You really seem to have came into this video wanting to have a negative reaction. You start by complaining that he is apologizing, which is exactly not what Tyler was doing, and then when he isn't and is providing explanation you are still upset. You also clearly lack the rural appalachia perspective that Tyler is specifically referencing in this video. He has seen first hand exactly the hate and disdain that he is describing that you so quickly dismiss. I think you are doing more harm than good by reacting to this video much like the harm you claim Tyler is causing by making his explanation video.

Tyler’s music is so good that he has country music listeners sympathizing with and defending prewritten, woke propaganda. Everyone loves to point out that this isn’t an apology. You’re right. It’s an artist preemptively explaining his art so he doesn’t get cancelled by the mob. In a sane society, an artist wouldn’t have to do that. The art would speak for itself, and it would be left to be interpreted in different ways by different people to fit their situation and perspective. He surrendered to the mob with this pathetic video.

This area is void of black people and thus is void of the ability to understand the issues of the black man. I think he has caught flack for pandering to the issues that we are exposed to ad nauseum, and feels strong about his stance and finds it necessary to explain himself and dumb it down for simple folks to understand, to force a sense of empathy! he feels that his song pissed off white folks and wants white folks to understand what if the tables were turned. this song changed my attitude as it should yours!!!

Oh but every “woke” person will defend someone who pulls a gun on a cop like man people really be stupid asf, become a cop, go out and try to help people, have a gun pulled on you and THEN make that life or death half a second decision to either die or keep living. Much respect man.

And not all cops are bad, I’d like to think majority of people feel the same way, yes there are bad ones, but I believe the good FAR outweigh the bad in this world we live in. The narrative that any policeman or state trooper or law enforcement of any kind is bad and wants to harm people is beyond ridiculous and such a blanket statement to put on so many different people. Hell put it this way like many others have, let all law enforcement disappear for a month and let crime and destruction run wild, then sit back and think if law enforcement is REALLY that bad. Cmon y’all we fail to see how much good there is here and how lucky we are.

Exactly right he should’ve never made the video. Now he’s suffering the downfalls of bein “woke” and trying to please the snowflake community, he’s doin covers and shows now and barely singing his own shit, people stopped showing up at his shows as much and there’s videos of people leaving in stampedes cause Tyler’s “a new and changed woke man who cares for the oppressed” and doesn’t sing the stuff that got him in the door in the first place. At this point he’s peaked after making a video like this and honestly it’s been 2 years plus now and he still ain’t doin nothin and is hardly relevant anymore. This was the move that started his decline in the industry and ultimately gave most of his fanbase a sour taste in their mouths rightfully so. Go back to sleep Tyler🤡

@@dawsonsteagall7874 LMAO you're delusional... you want him to fail because he cares about the community?? 🤣 Tyler is as popular as ever and he definitely still has the same views about BLM, about labor organizing, about who's to blame for the decline of the economy in Appalachia (i.e. the corporations and the government) and all the social ills that come with it, like the epidemic of drug addiction.... Tyler is encouraging Appalachia (and beyond) to reconnect with its roots in organized labor and workers' solidarity against the bosses and the cops who help the bosses exploit the people, and those of us who know who we are love Tyler all the more for it!

You aren't listening with an open mind. You did the same thing on your reaction video for the song. You have a preconceived narrative and you were trying to make what he says fit into that narrative. Rather than listening to a sentence or a line at a time and pausing, try listening to the whole message. You don't have to be the smartest man in the room. Other people can teach you things, but you need to find some humility in order for that to happen. I hope you have a wonderful day
