I would watch a breakdown of every Goldeneye level by this guy, I love his passion for it. I grew up playing Goldeneye, but watching the current speed runs are incomprehensible to me, a painfully shy Bond yeeting grenades everywhere and somehow completing all the objectives. So now at least I know what's going on during the Runway level and can appreciate the insane skill of the runners
@C4ssi4an0
@C4ssi4an0 2 года назад
After all, the shorter the run, the greater the skill required.
@Lawofimprobability

The details about the evolution of the strategies and the kinds of processing involved (in terms of the software and human analysis) is what makes it a valuable learning experience for non-speedrunners. Watching the evolution of optimization techniques in a wildly different field helps provide abstract lessons. It is the detail that makes his videos worth watching. If he could get even more detailed (such as on the evolution of specific techniques), I would find it even more valuable.

It's a paradox. The year is 2122. Speedrunner Joey Anders has just pulled off the first negative 0:01 run, breaking causality and thrusting his consciousness back in time to when the devs were designing the level. His influence and ideas of what must occur lead the devs to unwittingly include a box of superfluous grenades in the level. The cycle continues without beginning or end; Only the grind to lower the time remains.

Can you maybe increase the boost you get from explosions with some lean motion strategy? Could you get into the plane faster by leaning those last few inches? Just some thoughts from a non-player.
@notalive5479
@notalive5479 2 года назад
As another non-player, I don't think these optimizations would matter too much, given the Goldeneye speedrunning community doesn't record milliseconds. The first strategy might increase the boost (I could be wrong), but the increase would be negligible, unless the 0:27 is already on the verge of being a 0:26, which I would wager is not the case. Leaning to get into the plane wouldn't matter either, since the end of the level is determined by when the final drone gun is destroyed, and entering the plane is timed to match that. Since entering the plane is already timed to the destruction of the final drone gun, and the final drone gun is already timed to be destroyed as early as possible, entering the plane earlier then was done in the speedrun holds no benefit.

Love these videos, I grew up recording random stuff to VHS but never doing anything with it, little did I know by my mid 20s i'd be online only to see just how many insane people where trying to speedrun games in general, i was never as good as any of them but man id have loved to be around the community during some of these early times.

So, a question about the differences between the :27 and the :28: From what I can spot in the videos of the different runs, every run except for the :27 uses the first grenade to kill the guard on the way to the first drone gun. In the :27, Joakim Ljung forgoes using the grenade on the guard in favor of using it to gain a boost coming out of the key room. After he passes the guard, he receives a boost from behind him. Am I missing any other differences from the :28, or are those the only differences. Also, as someone who has only really played the game casually, what is the purpose of killing that guard in the other runs? My guess is that it is mainly to prevent inopportune boost interrupting grenade throws. Is this correct?

the self boost out the first door and the boost from the npc before the first grenade throw (but just at the right time to not cause the charge to fail)... it's the tiny things that add up lol...

Great video man!! You explain the lean throws and other strats so perfectly that i can pretty easily follow what their doing in each video enough to notice the differences in the grenade throw precision/speed, the line they run, and the distance they are from the plane on the last throw and how they effect the time.. also ive put hundreds of hours into this game too.. but it was all in the 90's before i knew you could record video game play lol. Question though?? Does looking down make you run just a little faster???? all my boys and i used to argue about this and i would love to know..

I wonder if goldeneye will ever reach a point where people start timing themselves and decimals are counted. I know there’s reasons this hasn’t been done already but I feel like pretty soon there won’t be a choice. Maybe a new category of run could be created.

I've seen this addressed elsewhere. The in game time doesn't always match with real time, even with no pauses. The time is therefore more like a high score than an actual 'time' as in a real life race.

yeah I think karl failed to explain the very climax of the video lol.but I think it was the grenade boost + a forward boost from a guard +no shots that slowed down +perfect route +perfect lag reduction and it seems a very small forward boost at the end too
