This Step Is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL To Having A Better Lawn This Year!

It's time to take big action on my lawn this year. The first step is to do all I can to let more light in the garden. More light = a better lawn!
For a lawn to survive it needs at least 3 hours of direct sunlight on it each year.. so by doing this, it should in theory allow an extra hour or 2 of sunlight each day on the lawn, and as a result hopefully it will perform better and not thin out as much..
That is the lawn goal for 2024!

How is this project coming along? I’m doing a similar thing to my yard, taking a load of stuff out, adding some new stuff to the flower, renovating the lawn et cetera. I definitely underestimated the amount of work. Oh, and by the way, your videos have been a great resource for me, I’ve learned a lot from them.

Hi I've really not done a thing yet.. Will have much more time in a week or 2 once the lawn renovations are finished.. I did a little update about it recently here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BbJbd8PiD4w.htmlsi=XFDvQEz96GfVXI8M

Ever thought doing a video on garden pests? Gorget dog pee etc (cure for that is putting a little tomato ketchup in their food) - it works. Pests i mean MOLES or to a much lesser extent worm casts.... What i have found is that over the years, over feed the garden = hello worms = garden buffet for the moles. Keep up the good work
@LawnRight

Thanks for the tips.. I have covered some of these things but not so much on moles

If it was me I'd get rid of the lot from the LHS, fit a fence and a doggy run kinda thing. Get those trees down but replace them at a more suitable place. A nice workshop at the patio end would be great too.

Nice start, Shaun. If that was my lawn, I would get rid of the two fruit(less) trees and shrubs, as well as clear out everything to your property line...including the shed and begin with a mostly clean slate. Then I would put up a fence similar to the one on the other side and maybe put in a row of planters for small bushes or roses. While was at it, I would install the irrigation system distribution piping and do something different with the walkway to the back area. Only then would I think about reseeding for the year. I went through a similar task identification process when I decided I wanted to completely renovate my lawn and garden areas. I started with the projects that I don't want to see again, such as adding two sprinkler heads to one of the zones and replacing all of the drip irrigation lines in the flower beds. In order to do this, I had to thin the overgrown forest by removing four truck loads of garden waste (branches, dead shrubs, diseased trees, and so on). It was hard work, but my wife and I are very happy with the outcome.

@@LawnRight When I decided to renovate the flower beds and irrigation system, I knew what I wanted and how to do the work. When it came to the lawn, I also knew what I wanted, but did not know what to do. Thanks to your videos, I learned how to accomplish these tasks. Even today, my lawn is uniformly green and is the best in the area. When it's consistently warm enough to turn the irrigation system on, I'll overseed again.

Great job. I would keep those two trees as it looks nice in winter. What seed will you be using this year? brown top bent / fescue are the best for low light plus bent copes with damp. Also do you have an idea on how much soil would be required to dig up and replace a 35m2 lawn to about 3 inches? I'm guessing 4 tons. I dug the border out for shurbs in jan and the soil is full of large rocks 1-2 inches down and is generally heavy soil. I'm thinking aerating it wont help a lot so just digging out all the rocks then using 50/50 rennovation mix along with a thin layer of top soil mixed into the top should give it the best possible chance.
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 4 месяца назад
Hi, might be more like 5 tonnes (www.tillersturf.co.uk/topsoil-calculator).. I used an 8cm depth.. Ive got a few seeds on hand - I did just buy a low temp rye grass tahts hard wearing (thinking of the dogs!) but haven't entirely committed to anything just yet. My wife does love the trees - Im possibly going to keep them and do some pruning to thin them out this year and hopefully this will help!
@stevenbelcher5658
@stevenbelcher5658 4 месяца назад
Thanks a lot! The trees look really nice, especially with the bushes around them. Dogs may cause issues with fine fescues. I'm not sure about bents. I went to an old estate that is all bent and they do winter sports on it and it's still dense but recovers on its own without any work. people walk all over it when there is frost and it's fine. I'm looking fords to trying the bents out. Also I want to cut it below an inch an I have found even the most suited rye grassess struggle the thrive when kept short as they spend all their energy on groth straight upwards. I may be able to get away with less and really go over it with a rake to remove the rubbish and mix some sand into that. This is the last chance im giving it before I pebble it and plant srubs / trees lol. It's not bad but I dont like having to seed as I would rather it be a choice than a requirement to keep it looking nice each year. @@LawnRight

Hi Shaun , bite the bullet & remove the lot . Concrete gravel boards & concrete posts for the new fence , it will last you a very long time. New shed in at the same time nearer the house as you said . Much better ! Have fun !!

My apple trees look the same, it is because they are old and a bit neglected, after pruning and some nutrients, they will recover. The green stuff is moss... not harmfull to the tree.

Hello pal.....i would get rid of the bushes , put the fence in and perhaps some raised beds with some climbing plants that can cover some of the fence? That way you claim your garden back but you can add colour with the plants in the beds and colour up the new fence.....best of both worlds!!! Just remember, pal.....its your garden, so do what suits you and the boss.

@LawnRight
@LawnRight 4 месяца назад
Totally agree but (thankfully) we are surrounded by trees here - not quite right for all cases though. The main case is to simply prune them to let more light into the garden, however because mine had gotten so wild, it's making it almost impossible to install a fence, so. As for the trees on the lawn, I think some disease has gotten to them - they really struggled last year, proud red just a handful of apples and those only half developed and were rotten
