2 of the BEST THINGS you can ever do for your lawn. If you do these every year, many problems can be avoided.
I've been to this lawn before. In fact last year I did the same (but I had previously used my other POWERED drive aerator). I had a major issue trying to get this aerator back up the steep steps.
The customer was out golfing.. and I was stuck with a really heavy machine..
The benefits of doing scarifying and aerating every single year are overpoweringly obvious. The lawn is so much healthier, and performs so much better, and as a consequence looks a lot lusher and greener (and THAT'S why we do it!)
In this video I use and discuss several tools. I only ever show tools I personally use in my own business and on my own lawn.
Below are links to each tool. These are affiliate links where I may get compensated by way of a small commission. I appreciate it if you decide to make a purchase through any of my links (it doesn't affect your purchase at all).
Heavy duty leaf grabbers: amzn.to/4a0GvPc - similar to what I use, but these ones appear to be very good.
Bulldog Springbok rake - amzn.to/43cFu4u for physically raking a lawn to remove thatch. This is the cheapest option and is suitable for small areas. It is quite the workout though, so just do small sections at a time. I've used Bulldog products for 15+ years
Bulldog leaf rake - amzn.to/3Tdq6Aa I use these to rake the thatch into piles before picking up the waste thatch. I've used Bulldog products for 15+ years
Wolf Garten Scarifying head - amzn.to/4a7evcI
Wolf Garten handle(Aluminium) - amzn.to/49Fw6bY
or Ash handle (I use this one) - amzn.to/48N3CvB
Remember you need to buy the handle as well as the head, and don't forget all their tools have a 10 year guarantee. I really love the wolf garden hand scarifier!
Manual hand-held lawn aerators. I have recommended SEVERAL over the last few years.
I particularly like a few budget aerators as well as a few premium aerators. All of these push holes in the ground and aerate it. On a budget you can simply use a garden fork like this one amzn.to/48LWxf0
Budget aerators:
Walensee: amzn.to/3wECJN1
premium aerators:
JNJ: amzn.to/3PbWJwQ
Scarifier (budget) : amzn.to/4cbn3kW
As we get further into renovation nation season you want to be thinking about what told you may need for seeding and topdressing. here are some more tools and materials I use:
Grass seed: amzn.to/3V6iiCY

Sometimes you need a run up, even if it's just a little bit of momentum. A couple of planks help, under each ramp, instead of bricks. If the planks are different lengths then it two small steps up to the ramps, rather than a large step, caused by the bricks.

Another great video, and always informative! Just did my lawn today with a Greenworks corded model, and those loaf grabbers wouldve been so useful today, pulled out 26 cubic feet of material today, along with knocking down those pesky worm cast hills too, side note should probably out a remide sticky note on that machine to say "Dont use on lawns with steps"

Hey Mr. LawnRight, how do I scarify or aerate a lawn with a sprinkler system installed? Also, do you happened to have a DIY video on the subject? Thank you.
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 2 месяца назад
Hi.. No videos on it I'm afraid but. Depends how deep the pipes are.. Scarifying is scratching above the soil.. An aerator will go down around 2 inches 😊

Wow that was hard graft getting the aerator up the ramp, surprised it doesn’t self propel with the tines lifted for ease of manual handling, great work you did there.

Ive bought myself an aerator scarifier and ive been over my lawn with the tines roller and got a lot of thatch out but should i be going over it now another time with the metal blade aerator? My soil doesnt drain well and is quite claybased the blades aren't punching holes like yours but are more like the blades
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 месяца назад
Hi sounds like you've got a scarifier /lawn rake.. A lot of manufacturer's are wrongly calling them aerators.. If you've created grooves with the machine then you can stop.. I'd also look at a garden fork or hand aerator for the soil
@craigcousins6718
@craigcousins6718 3 месяца назад
@@LawnRight I've got a fork but when I started scarifying with a manual rake it was a killer so I went out and got a machine from Wickes which was just over £80 and your right about the collection box filling quickly more like every half a metre lol

Just did a "light" scarification on the highest setting on my lawn and pulled out loads. Just a bit concerned now the lawn looks light brown all over... did i scarify too soon? Plan to spray it with iron sulphate also as its very mossy

Not a cloud in the sky what a great day for lawn care. One question please, what is the point of aeration when you are scarifying all the thatch out? surely if it rains it would soak straight into the soil anyway without the thatch layers. Save your back and just scarify. Fair play getting that up them steps and sharing.
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 месяца назад
Hi.. yeah it was a lovely day :).. aeration helps relieve compacted soils, as well as removing some sub-surface thatch

One question I want to ask,I am going to renovate my lawn,should I aerate first,then scarify or should I cut first then scarify and lastly aerate?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 месяца назад
In practise it doesn't make too much difference.. For years I used to scarify first.. clear up.. then aerate.. clear up.. and tried it aerate first and its mostly absolutely fine.. just make sure you've created soil grooves for the seeds to touch
@romestunna_1227
@romestunna_1227 3 месяца назад
@LawnRight that's brilliant thank you,also is it OK after doing all these steps to put down some topsoil,then overseed and then topsoil again to cover the seeds?because my garden Is clay heavy and I want to put down some topsoil before overseeding,thank you

What happonds if that aerate maching hit a hidden stone under the grass?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 месяца назад
It would either bounce up or blunt the tip of the tine.. Does happen sometimes 😔
@AM-wt8qi
@AM-wt8qi 3 месяца назад
Or tree roots as well would possibly damage tine or cause it to bounce . Happens on a scarifier also if roots close to surface.

Quick suggestion after watching you struggle is to forget the ramps and use the wheels to pull up step by step you will be able to rest each step
