Over the last few weeks, I’ve had a 180 shift in what I think about tech conferences.
Not long ago I made a video where my conclusion essentially was that conferences were… not worth it, and now I sort of have to take it back.
My main problem with attending these things was ROI. For you as an individual, a ticket, plus flights, plus accommodations, plus time, plus foot pain from walking all day… was not even close to worth it. $2,000-$3,000 in exchange for some networking? Can you quantify that? It’s a hefty price any way you slice it.
Even for a company. Last month, we flew 6 team members to San Francisco to attend Saastr, and our bill came to around $12,000 all in. We tried to get more value out of the trip than the conference itself, (and we did), but it’s still a lot of money.
And that is nothing compared to what companies spend to host a booth and to give away swag.
So I sat down with a couple of startups to understand not only why they do it, but how it’s somehow become one of their key outreach tactics. And they’ve... sort of, convinced me.
So here’s some of their logic, plus some of my own learnings to make the most out of conferences.

Tradeshows / conferences remain the most important place to engage acquirers and strategic partners. Creating a track record of exhibiting next to / near these partners can really get a startup on the map for a later acquisition. Also, if the start up is competing with an established company, being close to them at a show can be very useful, they spend the big marketing money and attract the right kind of customers that the startup company can snipe off their booth.

8:45 I didn’t get how Appsumo justified their expense. So appsumo was to spend $100,000 in order for their partners to make $2 million? How are their partners making money in that after party?

Absolutely true. Human interactions that are natural and communal in nature tend to lead to valuable outcomes and relationships that cam be hard to quantify or understand, especially for introverts like me! My business partner taught me this subtle art to great effect and its worked pretty well online, especially when you take part actively in online community gatherings around certain topics or open projects. Honest interaction beats robotic marketing.

in a lot of industries, if you don’t exhibit, you don’t exist. I’ve worked booths in video gaming, consumer electronics and air navigation control. The cost doesn’t have to be super high, latest booth was around €12000. Depends on the country, city and the show

For me, our first expo was very stressful and expensive for bootstrappers like us but also very successful if 1. You have enough money to boost your booth to bring the traffic or 2. your product stands out so well that it naturally brings the traffic. We were lucky on the 2nd as we had the only product like that there. We went to a few smaller ones since then and there has always been some value in terms of meeting new people, customers or having a few drinks after.

I live in Vegas and have driven taxis and rideshare for a lot of trade shows. Another component of shows is business to business transactions ultimately come down to someone on both sides relying on the person representing the other party to follow through. When someone has built a business and has thousands of people relying on them to support their families, they need confidence in the people they do business with. That trust and confidence is built by seeing how they behave with alcohol. I don't drink and can't stand being around people that do, but the alcohol in Vegas fuels Wall Street and Silicon Valley. You don't even necessarily need to attend the show for your industry. Simply being in town and available to meet with your peers or potential partners is very valuable.

I think it’s the time availability that you need to really consider. Do for example there is no easier way to approach an executive then through a conference. He is not currently working and he has a break, where he’s less on guard. U. U can’t find that elsewhere

I don't necessarily think you guys need to do a booth, but attending conferences and letting people know that you're there via social media can be a valuable place to help build those connections. You can organize a meetup that way, without investing in the cost of booth. Like you said, because of the RU-vid channel, people know who you are

This just reminds me of playing music at clubs and festivals. Lot's of golden oppertunities to Establish a little more cred, but most of the times? you were lucky if you made your investment back through the actual gig. Made the band tighter in sound, but poorer in pocket. Embrace the carnival I say. Everyone feels socially awkward at these things, (some just hide it better) just looking for excuses to make those cool things to experience and tell everyone back at home. "Saw this cool product at the tradeshow" sounds lame at the dinner table. "Played crazy eights with the guys from this cool company" covertly pitches your product AND makes them king for a day. MAYBE you can land a deal or find the next big gig🤷🏾‍♀️? But if it's anything like the music industry? It's more like doing body shots off potential customers and hearing them out on how weird and hard life is. And if R.O.I is that much of a concern? Sell festival survival supplies (water, chargers, snacks, etc) undercut the price by any competitor you can find (word will spread, you'll be sold out by the first day.)

Definitely you should do conferences. RU-vid is nice and has a built in growth factor. Each video can continue to get new viewers. But for your startup, conferences were not just a growth source, but also a team building source. You took something that’s tiring and made it a little bit easier.
@dustinoverbeck

Not everybody watches RU-vid. So yes, attending conferences will help. It legitimizes you as a company. Plus, it’s a great way to find future partners and employees.
@DerDudelino

I agree, just gotta be pro-active and give it you're all. I think the biggest mistake most startups make is that they invest in the booth, not the appearance and they look like a bunch of school kids with really bad marketing materials that were likely done last-minute.
