Agreed. The Golf R is about as boring as it gets. Really like Hyundai stirring things up a bit. If you're looking for a car that's both affordable (when you can't afford the RS3), fun and practical... it's up there.

Considering I paid £43,000 for a delivery mileage S5 Sportback in October (yes I know you can't compare them), think of how much car you are getting for £2,000 less.

0 0 I don't know. My old car, a Q5, only depreciated £9,000 in two years, and it was a manual petrol, when most people who want a Q5 want a diesel automatic. Spunkey 1982 And I hardly find the A/S5 Sportbacks ugly, they look much better than a S6, with a sleeker back end. Each to their own. However I agree with the A7 Sportback's being ugly, they just ruin the car.

You could say the same about the wave R. It's the same as the cheapest wave diesel with another engine and badges. But that is not true either. As with an Abarth, the entire suspension and drivetrain has been adapted. A totally different car

45k and it doesn't have leather nor a sunroof? That's a joke. While the interior is nice, it's incredibly boring. The tartan cloth seats in the GTi look 100x better than this blandness. To be fair, MOST cars suffer from _50 shades of boring_ interiors.

£3k for the exhaust as a factory option, under £2k on the aftermarket and you get to keep the original, says it all. Just buy the RS 3, that car has soul, 400 bhp and a nicer interior. High spec nearly new RS 3 saloons are available for less than this Golf.

Have you seen the deals on pre-reg delivery miles or ex-demo RS3 saloon? Basic spec is good anyway with heated leather standard (I don't think Sam's even has leather!). There is one for sale for £39000 at Cheshire Oaks Auddi and even without the RS Sports Exhaust it will sound way better than an R even with the ridiculous £3k Akrapovic. And if you want the factory sports exhaust it's under £2k fitted by Audi and then sounds like an R8 V10 (and you can Ebay your old one). Interior and general build is way nicer and it's 400 hp not 300 hp (R has gone back to 300 hp from 310 for WLTP emissions). Oh and it's an Audi, a premium brand not a price led VW. Mind you I see more sense in this £45k car then I see in all the basic spec Mk7s that people leased with cloth, small wheels, no navigation that are flooding the used car market now.

volkswizard RS3 is what I would love to have one day, preferred choice but VW is value for money. If you’re talking both brand new vehicles the RS3 is expensive and just look at all the package options you can have on Audi. It just goes on and on. VW has a lot as standard. Etc. Folding mirrors. Also I don’t believe the interior is better in my opinion the Audi’s are now following VW with the built in screens have a look at the new A8 and A6. The pop up screens looks cheap. I haven’t driven an RS3 but would definitely would like to own one day :) Dream hyper hatch.

You have to understand that the RS3 at Cheshire Oaks is a 67 plate in an undesirable spec and colour combo. If we're going to start talking second hand, there are Golf R 7.5s for £27k with barely 2k miles on the clock and the same age as that Audi. £12k is a a lot of money.

Had a blast against a BMW 135m in my golf R and got my arse handed to me!!! Spoke to the guy at the traffic lights afterwards who initially was going to buy a Golf R but didnt want to wait 6 months(at the time) waiting list and instead went for the 135m. If I had the choice again I think I would have gone for the 135/140 over the Golf R!!!

The list price may be a lot but it’s how good value for money these are on finance deals and leasing offers hence why we see them around so often. Great all rounder car.

I agree the RS3 is in every way the better car I think the price would be more justifiable if it came with 400bhp. Nevertheless, id be happy enough with even a bog standard S3 i understand this has more options. But still...

This Golf obviously had every option ticked to make it come out at £45k, I know you said you can get a new RS3 for the same price, but if you start ticking all the options on a RS3 you can make that into a £70k hothatch. obviously a basic spec Golf R is £32k or there abouts where as a basic spec RS3 is a £45k car.

i work for VW as a technician. This Golf Mk7.5 after all specs are added, Its 45,000 for everyone here but as my staff discount knocks of 30% of the initial price minus the tax... Ill be paying close to 31,000... for me thats the deappreciation knocked of and abit more. 😁 please dont feel salty.

I had to make this exact same decision a while ago, S3 vs. R vs. M140, and I chose the BMW because I felt it was the most exciting car. Also I hate the quad tailpipes from the R and S3. The S3 was a close 2nd, but the R ended up not even being a consideration. Loved that exhaust sound on Jo's M140. Was that an MPE or something else?

You can get an 18 month old Golf R (facelift) for around £25k and then spend a couple of grand on mods. Save yourself a lot of cash! They do depreciate a lot in the first year. Also if you are keeping it long term the GTI is probably the better car.

Manc Alot of european countries 45k for a golf r is just a dream. Here in finland the base price alone is nearly 60k. Fully specced out closer to 80k. Your cars are cheap you just dont realise it.

The funniest part is, that same Golf R here in Canada, fully kitted out (though priced with the 6-spd manual) is $43,865 CAD, or 26,222 GBP. You'd have to add VAT (GST or HST here) on to that (assuming no trade-in), but that still only gets you up to 29,623 GBP.

£45,000 For a Golf is real silly. But if you avoid the Trick Exhaust and other options. You are on the same level as an M140i. It might not be as very Sideways as the Beamer. But it has a better sense of connection and overall. It covers ground so well, plus it looks like it could fit in anywhere 🙌🏽.

Just because other manufacturers make hot hatches does not mean they are the Golf R. From an enthusiast perspective, a very powerful mod friendly 4-cyclinder that puts down 400HP/400lb/ft of torque from just software tuning and a downpipe can not be said by 99% of other competitors. It sits comfortably between a loaded GTi and an Audi S3 base. It's not the value friendly option but for me in particular with the mods I have done have created a completely different animal. for 45,000$ US, you can have a car that does mid 3 second 0-60 pulls and the quarter mile in high 11s, all with a very livable premium interior.

You can get a really good spec Golf R MK7.5 with pan roof, nav pro, DCC, keyless go, 19 inch Pretoria’s for around £39.5k. I don’t think the Golf R needs the performance pack or titanium exhaust as you can get they after market for probably cheaper

I took delivery off my R in March which is moderately spect and I paid £33,000 due to the 15% discount via carwow which brought it down from circa £38,000. Have to say it’s a brilliant car, I sold my 2014 RS6 for it and I prefer the golf...now it has a Revo stage 1. Sam give it a chance..it’s fast, great on fuel and understated. Plus now mine has the stage 1 it would smoke a RS3

Wish it was that cheap in Holland. Nicely specced they do over 65.000 euro's which is roughly 60k pounds. An RS3 is closer to 100.000 euro or 90k pounds. 20k emission tax on the Golf R. Absolutely absurd. Lapiz Blue is stunning though

Sam to get the most out of the Akrapovic you have to reselect race mode every time you get in the car and I recommend putting gearbox into manual, plant throttle and change near the redline 1st-4th and should get decent dsg farts! Also when in manual mode when revs are just below 3k rpm change down to 3rd or 2nd and you will get some lovely pops 👍😎

Sam go onto the Individual settings. Shift quickest setting Suspension hardest Interior sound normal Keep your finger on the traction control button for about 15 secs until it turns as much nanny shit off as poss and the car feels a lot sharper and different to the standard settings. Play about with all the above and it’ll transform the car. Only took me 18 fucking months of ownership tomsuss that! Now I have I’m back loved up with it.

Sam these do have virtual cockpit just watch SOL and you said it didn't.. you need to go onto the nav screen and at the bottom it will show a picture of the dash or screen press that and It will switch

Great video Sam! You have to remember though that if you push you can get 12% discount at dealer, so that’s just over £40k. You won’t get anything off an Rs3 if anything and you have to add options onto it

Never pay list price, go onto carwow, spec your car, get a print out of the best price, take it into your nearest dealer and watch how they magically manage to knock thousands off the list price to beat your best quote.

this car is insane value for money as you can actually get a very high spec with a DSG gearbox and very very low mileage for under £30k. out of all the hot hatches ( A45,S3, focus RS, Renault RS, BMW M140i, seat Leon cupra) I would take this ever single time. you can cruise gently and get good fuel economy, build quality is great and you have 4 motion and 310ps when you want to floor it!

Pretty sure you can get a 7 for around half the price now of a 7.5. Might not have all the fancy gizmos you get in the 7.5, but performance wise they're near enough identical. You could even tune it and still save money.

you should get a focus rs for a week too. Ik you've driven one briefly but try driving it everyday and especially take it to the backroads. I would agree the golf is a better daily and more comfortable car but the focus is so fun

Get this as your new daily (Tony can give you a good deal i guess since there are so many of them) and you could do some slight mods to it.. wrap (green :D) exterior stuff, exhaust, maybe a tune

I’ve just bought one, MSRP of mine was £36,000 with a few options, metallic grey, Pretoria alloy wheels 19”, rear view camera, DSG etc.. with dealer discount I got the car at just over £31,000, these cars can get stupid money if you go all out on spec.. but you don’t need to get it to 45k for it too look and feel good 👎🏻 options like the exhaust are just a waste of money, my local tuning garage can put this car stage 2 410bhp for 2.5k with a decat and intercoolers

She chose the Beemer so she could get her rear end in something comfortable. BTW I had one of the original R32s in 2004. It was amazing and so practical too, but I bought it as a low mileage second hander for only about £18,000. I put a good plate on it too R30 DUB.

Golf R lease deals are actually really good (They have been discounted already plus the residuals aren't too bad) With PCP if you want to go down that route, you should be able to get a lot of money off them list.

My mate has just bought one, took it out and compared it with my Cupra 300, made for a fun day. I agree this one is a bit steep though. Luckily for second hand owners they dont always hold money too well as you discussed in your podcast on hot hatches with Tony!

My GTI DSG base spec with met paint listed at £31k. I think that’s the sweet spot of the range. Plenty quick enough. Brilliant car. 👍

A few months ago my dad was test driving the golf r to the focus rs and as soon as we drove the golf, compared to the focus it just didn't have the sense of occasion that the focus had

Glad they gave you the Performance Pack with the Akrapovic exhaust. The Akrapovic makes this car for me. Although I don’t like the Spielberg wheels. I specced mine with the black Pretoria’s.

A fairly bog standard golf r with dsg in Ireland is over €50000 in Ireland. UK buyers have no idea how lucky they are! A focus RS is almost €60000..

That exhaust has £1000 brand premium. You can buy a BCS Powervalve full system for a Golf R for about £1800 and I bet it sounds better

Great review as usual and shocker of a price on the R, I looked at this but too much and got a Seat Cupra 300 3 month old with 3K miles fully loaded with sun roof etc. for £26K..

Good vid 👍🏻 glad you were finally able to get over the price! Errrr just... haha. It’s mad! You just don’t need the PP if you’re running it as a daily. I have the 7.5 R. I specced, DSG, pearl black paint, black Pretoria 19 inch wheels & privacy glass (drug dealer spec 😂) I paid 15k less than this one in your vid. I’ve covered 22k miles in a year and love it. Try one without PP to compare 🤔

Wow, my 2020 version with full kit including Panoramic roof and Dynaudio in Oz came in at equivalent GPB 33.7K . As you do bang on about price a bit I reckon mine was a bargain! 😉 I didn’t want to wait another year for the 1st gen 8 to arrive in Oz... I still have my MK6 GTD but I must admit the R is getting much more love...

The R makes loads of sense at a particular price point but that is way too much. Firstly you definitely don’t need either the PP or the Akro exhaust, there’s a saving of £5k. Neither do you need the carbon wing mirrors or the Nav pro which I’m guessing it has, another £1.5k saving. There it’s down to £38k already and then take into account that no one ever pays list price for a golf so can take off at least another 10 to 15% and your down at £33-34k easy. At a particular point it’s the best value for money hot hatch out there

I think it's easier to get your head around the Golf R price tag when you consider the running gear / machinery is an "R" setup. Golf is just saying the shape of the car but that's where the similarities end between the Golf and the R. You can easily bitch about many cars list price if you just call them by their stock name and not the by the variant you're getting for the extra money you're paying....

I'd pick my MK2 Focus ST over an R any day but thats just my opinion as i'm obsessed with 5 pots! Paid 7k and for an extra 2k in mods you have 320 hp and an insane noise, probably not a popular choice but it has so much more character than an R in my opinion (driven an R too)
