The actual video for this one would’ve completely mesmerized you and made you miss the great song! Still wish you would’ve watched it, in all it’s spandex glory!
You guys need to see the video for this on RU-vid. David is so over the top! He’s definitely a “showman”. Steve Vai is the lead guitarist on this album. No one can take the place of Eddie, but he’s damn close!
Steve Vai is an AMAZING guitarist, but the way he meshes with Billy Sheehan on bass and Greg Bissonette on drums is what really makes this special. I love every song on this album, but “Going Crazy” and “Shyboy” are my two favorites. His cover of Sinatra’s “That’s Life” is great too. This band stayed together for the Skyscraper album before they went their separate ways. “Two Fools a Minute” is my favorite they did, but “Hina” melts me.
@@ZacCostilla I drumbled stunkenly to the back door of the Roxy when Steve and Dave & company were setting up in the summer of '85. Steve was so damn friendly and accommodating to me, Diamond Dave was Diamond Dave.
The truly great Steve Vai is on guitar and deserves a deep dive! He is definitely a GOAT Guitarist and he will absolutely blow you all away!! A HUGE catalogue. I'd start with "For the Love of God." Nice one y'all!
LOL. I'm not sure. I remember the day that album came out (I was highly anticipating it) and DLR did an interview where he said it was a tribute to the Statue of Liberty & I remember thinking, that's just Dave saying silly Dave things. Nope. Turns out that's what it is. His brain is just a little left of center on most days. lol.@@mangerinegirl
I'd say anyone could be forgiven for not knowing this song was about The Statue of Liberty. It's hard to imagine any sane person writing "the original good time girl" and "when she walks" (?), and "pick up the phone, no time to waste" when talking about her. Even if speaking metaphorically, I can't see how those lyrics make sense! 🙂
DLR assembled an all star band: Steve Vai-guitar, Billy Sheehan-Bass and Gregg Bissonette-drums. Some of the very best players. I have to give Gregg some appreciation...he's like a chameleon or jack of all trades on the drums...he can play every style: rock, jazz, funk, big band, african, country etc. He's the most versatile of the guys. The other guys are monsters as well
@@truckinfool3550 Came to mention this, and also add that Billy Sheehan of course went on to co-form Mr. Big, and there's some fertile ground to be found in their catalog as well.
Not sure Jay would enjoy these selections. U should recommend “Goin Crazy” and “ Just Like Paradise”. He prefers rocking songs, those 2 covers are just ok
WAIT, WAIT, WAIT!!! You need to see the real whole video for this. It explains the cover art and gets you in the mood. This is David Lee Roth, Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, and Gregg Bissonette! This was Roth's first full solo album without Van Halen. His EP had "California Girls" and Just a "Gigolo". Second full album was Skyscrapper, also great. You head bobbing together was perfect. Edit: Oh, and no one plays like Steve Vai, Literally NO ONE!
@@sanzoftatooine That is totally the vibe you need to go into this song an video. I use to be able to quote the whole pre-log to this video verbatim. "Not in my store you don't!" LOL
How could you NOT watch the official video for this?!? The videos from his solo days were amazing.... The video for the song makes it like 50% better at least !!
Steve Vai is the Guitarist. And yes, he is Elite. Started with Frank Zappa and played with Alcatraz, White Snake and other ventures. One of my favs. Also played in the movie Crossroads as the Devils Guitarist.
The video for “Just a Gigolo/Ain’t Got Nobody” really shows Dave’s humor and outlandish creativity. You’ll enjoy that video and trying to identify all the 80’s artist parodies m.
Seconded! Just Like Paradise is the one that’s still on my playlists! It also has an amazing video, so you guys just gotta check that one out next! 🥰❤️🤘
I went to that concert tour in Peoria Illinois, Faster Pussycat opened for them....he did all of the stuff in the video. Giant surfboard, boxing ring rising out of the floor and up into the air, coming down from the scaffolding in the dark with light up ropes.
Roth, Vai, Sheehan, Bissonette. All legends. You should check out some of the Steve Vai solo stuff if you want to hear some really odd (but amazing) stuff. This song is about the Statue of Liberty.
I seen David Lee Roth "Eat Em An Smile" Tour Sept. 27, 1986 at Cobo Arena Detroit, MI. Cinderella opened for him. Great show!! Another great song off this album is Goin' Crazy! the video's for these songs are cool also! 😎🤘🤘
Yeah, Steve Vai can really wail on that guitar. And Billy Sheehan on bass. Amazing! With Gregg Bissonette keeping it in the pocket. David made an incredible band.
I know many times people don't like it when bands break up, but I'm really glad David and Van Halen split. I'm forever grateful for the music Van Halen made with Sammy and I love this solo album by David.
Great reaction. Diamond Dave was firing on all cylinders at this time. He came out strong with Eat ‘Em and Smile. Van Halen answered with OU812 (Oh, you ate one, too?).
Back when rock stars and Hollywood actually were appreciative of the country that allowed them fortune and fame. Statue of Liberty in all her recently renovated beauty in '86
DLR's solo songs ":Just Like Paradise" two covers Beach Boys "California Girls" & "Just a Gigolo / "I aint got nobody" medley by a New Orleans jazz singer from the 1920's or 1930s
This was David's vision of rock, and he hit it out of the ballpark. It has a much cleaner sound than the the Van Halen recordings. He never intended to leave Van Halen, but, Eddie wanted to record, and David was having fun being a rock star. Besides, Eddie wanted to stretch out and become an "artiste", and Diamond Dave wasn't having it anymore.
nah, you obviuosly dont know much about Van Halen history,.. 1984, 5150 OU812 F.UC.K. , Balance are all much cleaner than anything Roth ever did solo . and Roth went solo in 1985 with "crazy from the heat" , and THEN they kicked him out. that is why Van Halen Had 4 NUMBER ONE ALBUMS IN A ROW after Roth leftt....LOOLLOLOLOL Roth didnt have any platinum albums afteer 1988, meanwhile , Van Halen Dominated the charts with FOUR NUMBER ONE ALBUMS 5150 (6x platinum) OU812 (4X Platinum) F.U.C.K ( 3X platinum) and Balance (3X platinum) Van Halen filled Stadiums in the 90's , while Dave played small theaters to support his albums which sold about 50k in the 90s lolol Van Halen won THE GRAMMY for best album in 1992 F.U.C.K. , While Roth struggled to fill seats . LOLOL His 1991 tour turned into a financial failure, with low attendance and one-third of the shows cancelled due to poor ticket sales. Setlists were shortened and songs from the current album dropped as the US tour went on... LOLOL I think we are done teaching your lesson today kiddo LOLOL CHEERS FROM SUNNY CABO
Dave wanted to become a clownshow , born a spoiled rich kid, eventually balding in spandex "bozedy bozedy bop", Van Halen were musicians their whole lives, Dave wanted to be a clown. Van Halen dismissed him.
I'm not sure how wealthy Dave was growing up, but his father was a doctor. After David Lee Roth stopped music, he became a real NYC paramedic. DLR may not be a musician, but, he is a singer and a lyricist. His view of rock & roll just differed from the Van halens, who were a family of musicians. @@scenevision356
Got tickets to the concert. Paid an airbrush artist $25 to make a t-shirt from my design. The Statue of Liberty holding up a rose. The words Yankee Rose in red, white, and blue flag stars and stripes. My friend and I shoved our way to the front. 5 feet away staring straight up at DAVID LEE ROTH!!! Crushed into the rail by the crowd. A girl threw up on my new shoes. Sweated off my make-up, hairdo, and streaked the paint on my shirt. Best show ever!🎉❤❤❤
"Damn Good" off of his album Skyscraper is such a great song. Really chill, great lyrics, makes me nostalgic... Hidden gem. DLR solo is killer. Vai is so sick
Steve Vai on guitar here, his resume is extensive and he is one of the best guitarists in the business! You can hear that David Lee had a lot to do with Van Halen's success! Check out more of his solo music!
People thought Dave would falter after he left Van Halen but what'd he go do, he puts a band together that included Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan and Greg Bissonette. Amazing! Live they were phenomenal. Please please please react to the actual video!
In 1986 I went to my first concert when I was 14 and it was David Lee Roth and Cinderella and it was awesome seeing Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan do their dueling solos was out of this world!
1986 was the centennial celebration of the Statue of Liberty. The statue went through a refurbishment for the centennial. This song was David Lee Roth's tribute.
Great introduction to The two greats, Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan. This was such an amazing line up. Roth made sure that his debut solo album was absolutely over the top and that he wasnt missing a thing when moving on. Of course VH was longer lasting but David was going full speed til the tires fell off. Him in his hay day can not be topped for a front man. He didnt have the voice of Mercury or Plant but the man was all about putting everything into the shows back in those days...
Amber & Jay, here are some other good David Lee Roth solo songs to react to: "Just a Gigolo", "California Girls", "Ladies' Nite In Buffalo?", "Goin' Crazy!", "Big Trouble", "That's Life", "Just Like Paradise", "Damn Good".
Like many others have said, you guys have to see the original music video to this song. The intro alone is worth it. Plus the outfits and David's dancing just put it over the top. Truly 80s excessiveness.
His band: Steve Vai-guitar, Billy Sheehan-bass, Gregg Bissonette-Drums. All top-notch musicians. You should see the video with live clips of this song. It will blow your mind. They were a spectacle to see live in concert.
Eddie, Randy Rhoads and Steve Vai are my top 3 guitarists. Vai makes his guitar talk in the opening. It's 'David... why are we here... whoa... catcall whistle... laughing... wild.... wild... wild' (at least to me). Vai can do so many crazy things with his guitar. To me, this was more like the harder rocking pre-1984 VH than what VH was putting out.
Dave always had really fun videos. Many of the same characters appear in them. It makes a little more sense if you watch them in order of his initial solo releases….California Girls; Just a Gigolo/I ain’t got nobody; Yankee Rose; That’s Life
Freaking Awesome Album! If I remember correctly, the song is about the Statue of Liberty. If you want to delve into another Van Halen related new artist, I recommend Eddie Van Halen (and Valerie Bertinelli)'s son Wolfgang Van Halen! Wolfgang played as a bassist in later Van Halen concerts and their last album. His solo albums are under the name Mammoth WVH. (the name is in honor of his Dad.) Sounds like a band, but he plays EVERYTHING on both albums. And there is not a bad song on either album! I recommend starting off with "Don't back down, Another Celebration at the end of the World, or Horribly Right.") In a great video and song that is NOT typical of his sound, he does a very touching tribute to his father called "Distance." You have to do the official video for that one. He mixes in home footage of him with his parents.
Best solo break away from an iconic historical band... This whole album kicks ass! Steve Vai, Gregg Bissonete, and Billy Sheehan. And now if you're ready DLR raps in the song "Big Trouble" 😊
Who all remembers this concert...beside me I mean? BTW, in case you didn't look it up that guitar is Stevie Vai!! Saw this Eat 'Em and Smile tour (September 25, 1986), and Van Halen's 5150 tour, (May 13, 1986... Eddie Live), in Pittsburgh at the old Civic Arena!! Dave even had them open the roof! This and Dave's next Skyscraper tour, (July 17, 1988), where he Surfed above the crowd on a giant surf board! Dave was a showman!!
