To grow the sport, it’s really imperative that fans and ppl who may be interested in watching the meets actually are able to do so online without dealing with paywalls or delayed viewings of meets. I am a fan of the sport, yet I was frustrated with how the World Championship events weren’t available to watch on a platform like Hulu or RU-vid as the events were happening live. Track and field should have a deal with streaming platforms to stream the events live. Also, athletes need to be accessible to the fans by engaging with them to hold their attention and interest in the sport.
@Elliottklassen
@Elliottklassen Месяц назад
I tend to agree, except then I wonder sometimes, why do track and field fans (including myself) expect coverage of our sport to be free? How does that help the sport if they can’t even monetize coverage of professional events? I think too often people try to emulate league sports when considering how to promote track and field, but I think a more comparable model to our system of one-off professional events is something like what the UFC does, which does also happens to include pay per view events. As much as I don’t want to pay for the events, if track and field fans were accustomed and willing to pay to watch meets it would undoubtedly be better for the sport. The problem currently is that most events do have some free option to watch, which makes people expect and feel entitled to free streaming. A fanbase like that would never be willing to shell out money for pay per view events.
@Elliottklassen
@Elliottklassen Месяц назад
The strange thing is that we expect streaming services to be free, but so many of us have happily paid for tickets to diamond leagues and world championships. I wonder why we’re so unwilling to pay for one, but completely unbothered to pay for other (most diamond league events end up being sold out.)

Way back in 1972 I was the invitational events coordinator for a significant indoor meet. Four athletes who had agreed to come , the ones we focused our promotion on, simply did not show. I had a list of very good runners on a waiting list but could not call any because these world class athletes did not have the courtesy of picking up a phone and letting me know they couldn't come. To grow the sport of track and field? There needs to be REAL updates and REAL coverage of it. I'm a huge track and field fan and I totally forgot about this track meet because no one was really talking about it. Make it more accessible. Now a days to watch a track meet you have to watch through some 3rd party or pay a $30 to $50 a month subscription. And even then depending on what state you live in you still might not be able to watch. Which means you have to wait until someone post the highlights on RU-vid. As far as athletes dropping out or meets, I don't think that's something that will ever be fixed. Most pro athletes dont run during the indoor season, and they usually only run 3 MAYBE 4 meets before trails.

This meet was disappointing the whole way through. Even because we had strong headwinds for every event. Most of these tracks are invertible for this exact purpose. Why wouldn't we switch the track so that we have 1.0-3.0m/s tailwinds instead of headwinds? We would have ended up with many world leads, Olympic qualifiers, and overall exciting performances. Perhaps we even would have had less DNFs since athletes have nothing to gain from running into a 2.0m/s headwind.

I can speak for Germany where Track & Field is hurt by the fact that many big stadiums have been turned into pure football/soccer stadiums over the last 20 or so years making it difficult to host meetings in bigger towns. Berlin and Munich have their respective Olympic stadiums, but most other cities have lost their stadiums with tracks. There are still meetings happening, but it just shows that there isn't much importance placed on Track & Field and it shows in the results of German athletes or the lack thereof.

World Athletics is BROKEN and it desperately needs people who know how to run a global business. Find those people, look after them and they will do the job. It's not rocket science.

I’ll give you a data point. I’m a track fan and I live in Miami. I chose to attend the college meet at UM - Hurricane Alumni Invitational. The Miramar meet itself sucks. No respect for distance at all. Look at the event list. No 1500. Not even an 800. But a 600 outdoors? Not enough stars especially when there is no 800 or 1500. I looked at the heat sheets and decided it was not good enough to make my wife (not that into track) attend. I’d rather watch the college athletes I follow as a father of a high school track athlete. And yeah-no promotion whatsoever. Only hardcore track fans even know this meet exists.

Mixed thoughts about switching the running direction. I was in a meet where it was sunny and warm for most of it, but then a freak storm blew in just as I started the 200. Around the curve was fine, but the gust that hit as I entered the straightaway literally almost stopped me in my tracks. I finished the race then ran to my car - a tornado hit the area a bit later. My time was slow for me but I still placed well. You can't always predict these things and event organizers can have difficulty making changes. And what about those running longer distances, like the 400+? They are going to get hit with the wind one way or another - why should the short distances be any different? Similarly, at the top levels, races with wind show the grit of the true athletes, making what they do all the more impressive. What do other countries do, where the sport is significantly more well-attended? Start in elementary school - how do they grow the interest starting that early? You can't just look at adults in their prime to get an answer.

I love track and field. In fact, I love sports like this, where the athletes compete individually, like boxing, swimming, tennis, gymnastics, etc. They can have all the trainers in the world, but when it comes down to the actual competition, it is up to each individual alone. Yes, they can pair up with others as a team, but it is ultimately an individual sport. Other sports are team sports and it takes the efforts of the whole team to win. Like in football, you can praise and compliment and judge a quarterback as the best, but he can be no greater than his offensive line that protects him and gives him the opportunity to pass and or move out of the pocket and the receivers who get open to receive the pass. (Can he be great without an offensive line and receivers? If so, let him play on the field by himself and see how many touchdowns he is credited with.) As in other sports, likewise. It takes the effort and assist of another/others. But in individual sports, like the ones I mentioned, it is all on the individual. I tend to be more impressed by them. (I’m not saying I am not impressed by great teams, I am impressed how they can use their individual skills to “work together” as a team. However, it takes the team to win.)

We need to figure out a way to penalize the sponsors or athletes to discourage this from happening.

More money, more promotion, and more options of viewing these events need to be put into track and field. Track and field is one of the most special sports in the world and people half the time don’t even know when these special athletes are running. Why isn’t this sport or these athletes getting promoted? They are just as special and hard working or even more special and hard working than any other big time professional athlete! You know how many people would love to promote and go out and cover these events? Record them live and get interview with these athletes? I would love to personally but it seems like the higher ups don’t care about that…

From my understanding this isn’t a big meet. ShaCarri usually runs fast there so I think it gained traction over the past few years. It was as streaming on peacock until ShaCarri and Sherika pulled out. It was rumored the meet couldn’t meet their appearance fee.

Run into the wind for legal races, otherwise you are asking for voided record races by track officials in the future. Plus, weather is going to be weather. I would bring electronic false starts down to zero from the gun, personally if you want void or change anything about track starts.

My number one problem from today was the camera position. Why are you filming facing the athletes? You can never tell the positions while running or the winner. I didn't enjoy one thing. I knew Sha'carri wasn't running cause she announced it on her Instagram a couple of days ago so I was ready not to see her there.

The problem is not the athletes dropping out or winds. The issue with track and field is the nature of the sport. In the end of the day sports only grow due to how monitisable they are. If businesses cant make investments and see returns, the sport will not grow. But how do you monitise a sport where events like the 100m last no more than 11 secs? Also i love track and field but even i struggle to justify paying to go to competitons when 90% the time im there, ill be watching people running in an oval or people sprinting for a maximum of 50 secs. I think track and field needs to find a way to create longer periods of entertainment. Maybe 1v1 events. Similar to the UFC, 2 athletes go head to head. There could be prelims and main events. For each event. Love the channel btw

Last year when Sha'Carri ran fast with a tail wind, many discounted the time because of the excessive wind. So, running in the other direction doesn't solve anything. The very late withdrawals is very sad and hurts the sport. I hope both are OK. But then that also says hat they should have been able to run.

Track coach and fan here. The problem with T&F as a live spectator sport on the screen is...we usually get something like 10 minutes of sprint prelims and relays, 20 minutes of distance, 5 minutes of the sprint finals, GOTTA have the women's pole vault, and then 1.3 minutes of recap of the best few throws and jumps. Another issue is...covering a meet properly with the closeups and angles that modern fans expect takes FAR more cameras and people than doing any other sport. It's prohibitively expensive. THAT is why the Olymics gets it, and no one else does; they have the sponsorship money to afford it, and the T&F governing body isn't involved, it's the Olympics people; and THEY understand how it works. We need to find a way to show all of a typical meet, in a more cohesive way, and that's going to mean we DON'T get Olympic style camera work on every event, and the T&F bodies need to back off on the monetary demands from that revenue stream. We as fans need to stop expecting 8 different angles of each race, and slow mo replays of every jump or throw. No one can afford to do that on a weekly basis. And T&F administration needs to get over themselves. The other issue is...T&F isn't a timed event. ALLLLLL of the big money sports in the US have changed rules to try and make them fit into a time slot. Even cricket did it in the UK. Soccer...and no, I an NOT calling it football....well, they are going to do what they do regardless, and they were a times event with no real time outs anyway. But T&F can't do that very well. We have 4 to 6 events happening all at once, we may or may not be done in 4 hours, and there's no good way to change that. Maybe there should be separate "channels" that show the various specialties? I respect distance runners, and I like watching a REAL race; but we often don't get a "race" anymore, we just get exhibitions. If I could pay a low fee for JUST the sprints, or JUST the HJ, I'd be more tempted to spend the money. Crazy thing....disc golf has a pretty solid system in place. Jomez and a few other private channels have developed, gotten the sponsors, and do a good job of presenting the sport, and the disc golf folks allowed them the space to make it happen. But T&F can't/won't do that...the people in charge want the money and control, and they cannot/WILL not allow any private media to get involved without making them pay a prohibitive amount. The T&F ruling class needs to understand, at the "non-Olympic" level, they need to let the private folks build things, and THEN ask for a cut, not demand it up front and stymie all efforts to present the sport to the masses.

good quality stabilized telephoto video cameras are prohibitively expensive? panasonic g9 with leica 100-400 cost well under 3 k. you need maybe 10 of those, the hardware and software to switch between them live, volunteer amateur camera operators, and you have your year-round coverage for years. the cameras which can go from wide to long zoom are expensive, but rather than doing that you can always just cut to a 400 dollar camera fixed at a high point in the venue for the occasional wide image. maybe a wireless microphone system clipped on the actual athletes would be a nice touch, and that would mean you're actually ahead of olympic coverage, if only when it comes to just audio

Not related to these particular meets, one of my consistent disappointments happens in more championship meets like the Olympics or World Championships or often in the NCAA championships. In the distance races, when you have an occasion to have a plethora of the top competitors FINALLY coming together to compete directly with each other,,, and then they run these bloody "technical" or "strategic" races. Understandable in qualifying rounds but consistently happens in the finals as well. I want to see records challenged at these meets. I want to see these amazing top athletes really stretching themselves. I feel it greatly diminishes the event. Imagine watching the Super Bowl or the NBA championships or whatever where both teams are kinda just doing a warm-up for the first half of the game. Fewer qualifying rounds so athletes don't have to conserve themselves so much? Athletes choosing to compete in fewer events? I also realize weather plays a big part. Extreme heat or wind means ya gotta be more careful in doling out your energy. Maybe I'm greatly in the minority on this but just my two cents.

I'm glad you brought up the difficulty finding events. that often happens to me and I find it torturous. 1) there should be one go-to website with an easy to search master index promoting the individuals and the events, nothing else. 2) For the meets themselves, strip out the field events, more track-only ones and, for the sprints, roll-out stadium seats on the field side. It's like assuming fans who like swimming races also like synchronized swimming and forcing the racing fans to watch the ballet because both events happen in water. I want to watch people compete to see who are the fastest runners. I really don't care how far someone can throw and iron ball, and I certainly don't want to gaze at their bodies. --Achilles.

seems like in the US at least, the money is going into Marathons and even Ultra Marathons. I say that because that is ultimately going to be what solves this issue. Bigger sponsorship commitments to events. Maybe athletes need to form a co-op or we need a US version of the Diamond League.

Good callout on the Miramar meet not being streamed on a larger platform. A bigger problem is that the Miramar meet was not marketed very well. Miramar is right in my back yard and I didn't even hear about it until after it was done. Would have been great to attend the meet in person. I guess long gone are the days when track and field news dominated newspapers and 50,000 people would fill a stadium to see Jesse Owens compete.

Have a format like Formula 1. Have teams instead of countries. Then do a grand Prix type event in different locations. Accumulate points and give the winning team a huge prize. As fans of any sport, we follow drama, team gossip, narratives, rivalries. These meets on their own mean little to the overall fabric of the sport. Think about it. Every popular sport has narrative.

Athletes pulling out late in meets will always happen in an olympic year- all mindful of every lil' twinge they have or think they have at the time. Often they just want to avoid a competitor until the big day... Running the other way for a 100 would be so weird- curving right after the line !!! As for bringing on the sport- better coverage is definitely needed. It's crap in the UK- and from what I can see. less than stellar in others. The other major factor is the athletes themselves- they need to sell themselves better- they're the product after all... Some "get it"- Sha'Carri, Lyles, Davis-Woodhall, Warholm etc- and a few others. But I feel for the most part, too many athletes are quite benign- and need more "bite". Stirr things up a little, create some angst, get noisy, trash-talk a bit... Why do boxers get huge purses and BIG coverage.. cos' they're at each other- creating interest and rivalries. The public like rivalries... and so do sponsors...

I actually agree with running into the headwind, since the opposite might inflate numbers which are not comparable to running with no wind. And since running with no wind is the ideal for gauging a true speed. Leaving the best conditions for running with no wind and leaving the alternative to headwind makes the most sense.
