Toyota Service Manual - Instructions for replacing fuel tank: Step 1: Disassemble car

I have removed and put back the tank twice. When you put back in to make it easy and to avoid struggling and lifting the tank: 1 connect the vent tower to the breathers and push the tank in place with the tower attached; avoids connecting 2 difficult to get to hoses, 2. Push the rear of the tank into place (with a small jack) first while supporting the front of the tank on blocks about 150 mm high above the ground, then put in the back cross support with its 2 bolts loosely screwed in. 3. tie a string or wire round the plug up into the fuel gauge signal and pull this up into the car cabin. Make sure that as you raise the tank this plug comes right up through the hole. You may have to verify this when doing step 4 other wise the sender wire will get stuck between the tank side and the body . 4. using a small jack push the front of the tank up slowly but don't jack so hard that you put a dent in the tank. 5. Put in the front support strap by putting grease on the rod so it does not fall out of the strap and then screw in the bolt of the left hand side of the car. If you follow this you will find it easy to put the tank bank in as no lifting is required. from Jeff

I lol’d so hard when the coolant started pissing out on the floor 🤭 Edit... I’ve done more than a few fuel pumps in my day. Some without the need to remove the tank. Most I’ve had to, last being my weekend fun toy (an 87 t top foxbody I upgraded to a aeromotive 340lph pump). Mr. DOS though.. holy complicated in comparison. Kudos on you. Great work 👍🏼

Wow I had no freaking idea that MR2's fuel tank looks like that, elongated shape, right in the center of the car. Weight in the center and low, It's actually a brilliant idea!

Gtechniq makes a ceramic coating for Black trim called Gtechniq C4. It lasts for 3 yrs and is very easy to apply. Now is the perfect time to apply the coating to protect the brand new finish and not have to worry about putting on dressings every couple of weeks. Nothing makes a car looks old and tired as fast as faded black trim. I use it on both of my cars and trim still looks like day 1.

Then due to the lockdown, had more free time and started watching the Mr Dos playlist right from the beginning and no other video. It took me about 3 weeks but I'm all caught up now on Mr Dos and have not watched any of your other videos. You definitely have my respect and subscription. I hope you also change all the related wiring on the pump and etc since you have access to it now. On a side note, (for Mr Dos at least), this video has the most innuendos. Not complaining. LOL.

I also replaced my old wiper area plastic tray and vertical trim around the windscreen on my land rover disco LR4. No mater what restore product i used it still just went back to faded stained looking trim. Looks nice and fresh every wash 🍪. Your project is looking pristine.

I spent $35 on half a dozen fender screws yesterday. They get you on those specialty items. Love watching you work! Your brave to jump into these projects alone.

Crazy job with lots of hurdles and victories. Congrats on getting the heat shield and the tank out. Amazing how clean everything under Mr Dos is. Gear Wrench tools look great too. The best parts today were when you were cracking yourself up. Your innuendo game was strong on this one.

No need to drop coolant, just move the pipes out of the way. Also check the current draw on the fuel pump. It's much higher than the MR2 and the Walbro 255 so you could melt some wires if you don't update the wires.

I think I like this channel so much because your are so thorough at everything, cleaning, repairing and taking your time for stuff. The other car build channels are more like if it works its fine dont focus on it anymore...

Reminds me of my college days when I dropped my Pontiac Fiero's fuel tank for pump shenanigans too. That was the first time, but not the last!

Another tip is to grab a fuel pump electrical plug from a scrap yard car and connect up two long leads to it. Then you can drop the hose off the discharge of the pump and slip on a long length that you run to a fuel can with the tank still inside the car. Now you can run the pump from a battery and drain the tank completely before removal. Of course you could also just drive it until it runs out too..:)

You work so hard and obviously spend additional time to do some nice editing. I don't know where you get the energy. Sarah, thanks for what you do! I'm feeling motivated to work on my Mazda3 now because of your example.

Coffee filters are great for filtering. I laughed, when you covered the anti-freeze, Arizona dust. Also, I had a similar lift like yours, you or Charlie could fab a 6"x6" hinged piece of square tubing to get you just a bit higher. Flip it up when needed, or for get about it. Mine was the same height as the side rail.

I was in High School when this car was new. I used to think I’d love to own one. Seeing what a pain it clearly is to work on has disabused me of that notion... But thank you - I no longer think replacing the timing belt, water pump, seals, and accessory belts on my Miata this past weekend was all that bad, after all. Perspective. Its a beautiful thing. 😁

Hey Sarah, when I re-use coolant, I pour it through a paint strainer funnel into the cooling system. Gets all the chunks out.

That looks oh so familiar. We dropped the tank in my nephews car when we did the Camry v6 swap but we did it after the engine was out so it really wasn't that bad 😊

I remember taking my tank out. That was not one of my proudest moments. A lot of cursing, surprised the neighbours are still talking to me. Replaced the upper coolant pipes with brand new ones as leaking at the bracket locations. Expensive job that one. One bonus, had a drain plug in the tank. It’s a 1993 model

Hydraulic jack under the tank when dropping and lifting makes things easy. Helps if you make a piece of metal, to attach to the jack, thats the same shape of the tank so it doesnt slip off. Get some bigger blocks between the car and ramp give yourself more room, you look like a sardine in there. Sweet looking car, going looking for videos of it on the road now. Best of luck getting it back together.

Its a job we have always put off too (need to fit an upgraded fuel pump before some new injectors) .. It is as bad as i imagined .... well done...hope it goes back a little easier.. 😲
