It takes about 160ms for sound to be processed by the brains and 200ms for visual data. You processed the failure AND moved the throttle in 200ms (0.2s). Nobody is going to react faster then that. You might put a Strain gage on the Load that can detect torque being applied.. If the Load drops out you immediately kill the injectors. That would probably only take 50ms to respond to a failure like this..
@b.c4066
@b.c4066 2 месяца назад
but by the time the load dropped the damage was already done right? even if you can kill the fuel and spark that fast the time it takes to return to zero rpm it is going to break stuff. yes??
@AIM54A

@@b.c4066Correct. The instant the bolts broke nothing was going to stop the engine from hitting those insane RPMS.

I think it's necessary to keep digging for the root cause of the fault. Bolts broke, okay. Why did they break? Were they defective, fatigued, over torqued, wrong bolts\grade, vibration, and if so from what? Still amazed and relieved that no one was seriously injured by all the shrapnel.

Did we miss you tell us about the engine? What hp did it fail at and were the flywheel bolts arp or previously traumatized? Basically root cause of the failure. If you want perspective on that type of failure, watch jet engine videos of blade off tests. Truly violent and scary. The energy involved in these failures is staggering. So glad you all are ok and kudos to those pitching in to get SME back at full speed.

Amazing to see all that old sheetmetal with almost no rust. Living on an island in the Pacific we never see that on cars more than a few years old. I wonder if you could add a hinge on the top and have the quarters open up like gullwing doors, so they don't have to come all the way off for tire and rearend service.
@michaellapolice6931

A piano hinge right below the window would make it so it could hinge up, they would be visible, but it might make it stronger and keep it from being pulled off when going 200+mph.

Steve, I am concerned about the ability of the "spot" welds holding the Zeus fastener brackets to the fender(s) to not fail during 250 MPH runs. I'd feel better if you used through bolts in the fenders to hold the brackets in place. Those fenders are like sails and any slight pressure differences from inside to outside the fender at speed are likely to blow the fenders off. Just sayin' . . .

Steve, if you can figure out a pin and rail system or a tab and hole set up something similar that doesn’t have buttons so you can just hang the top of the panel on and then dzus the rest that would fix the access problem to that top lip.

Wonder if it would be beneficial to use the Zeus fasteners that have springs behind them and don’t come completely out so you don’t have to have a handful of Zeus faster or anytime you take a panel off.. I don’t really see them as much anymore, but a promod I worked on years ago had some and it kept coming to mind anytime like saw your videos when you were going to add fasteners to these panels - which I have a feeling you might be doing already lol In any case, your dedication helps. For more safety, Steinel makes a heat gun that would be suitable for much of that trim work. The Steinel HG 2320 E is 1600 watts, and hears up to 1,200 F. Last video I wanted to mention Steve... might be time to "re-inforce" the dyno room. In the Marines my Dyno observatory had twin panes of actual bullet resistant glass. Was able to deflect a breaker bar that was still on the dampner on a start-up once..... hit the window so hard the breaker bar was bend by around 20 degrees. Also might want to make the primary walls out of cinderblock minimum. I know some "boom rooms" fill the cinderblock with sand. Love your work Steve, stay safe big dawg.

Are you concerned with what the wind/air forces might do along the seam between the glass and the quarter panel at 200+ MPH? We have all seen them suck windows and doors off of cars, often at significantly lower speeds. I think that with the structural rigidity being compromised as it is, you would be well served to reinforce that area, even at the expense of the added weight. You’re going to be very upset if your fresh quarters get torn off the car at speed.
