His apology during the interview sounded very genuine. I have some respect for how he handled thi- as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run… and so that will make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don’t know if I’m gonna be putting on this headset again. I don’t know if it’s gonna be for the Reds, I don’t know if it’s gonna be for my bosses at FOX.
Lmao how. He legit said "that's not who i am, i have people who will say that and back me up, also I'm sorry to the people who sign my paychecks." If it's not who you are and you understand why it's wrong, you don't say it. Also "i have black friends" is no longer a valid defense. Also "i am sorry because I realize that this is gonna effect my pay." The apology fell far short. However the steps after have been good.
You know, I think Thom made a good move to go and talk about the incident, after all he is a man of faith and here's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it'll be a homerun, and so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I would be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's gonna be for the reds, I don't know if it's gonna be for my bosses at fox, I wanna apologize for the people who sign my paycheck.
30+ years of announcing baseball and you expect him to just turn it off like a switch? Everyone is poking fun at the way he apologized because of the home run call wedged between it. Stop acting like a child. There was nothing funny about it.
I think his apology was genuine and he deserves a second chance as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run to make it 4-0 ballgame.
@ Joe Schmoe Why do you believe he should not have apologized for that incident. Can’t you tell he’s a generous man since he was brave enough to apologize for his mistakes on live TV?! Jesus Christ. What kind of man are you?
you know, Thom made a mistake and I think he should be forgiven, he's a solid announcer and after all, he is a man of faith, and here's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it'll be a home run, and so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I would be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's gonna be for the Reds, I don't know if it's gonna be for my bosses at FOX, I wanna apologize for the people who sign my paycheck.
@@ralphus44 thank you for your input as I consider myself a man of faith, (and here's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it'll be a home run, and so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame, I don't know if I would be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's gonna be for the Reds, I don't know if it's gonna be for my bosses at FOX, I wanna apologize for the people who sign my paycheck), I will take your opinion to heart.
It’s great we’re holding people accountable for their mistakes. HOWEVER, we also MUST start to give people that’ve made mistakes a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run… and so that will make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don’t know if I’m gonna be putting on this headset again. I don’t know if it’s gonna be for the Reds, I don’t know if it’s gonna be for my bosses at FOX
I'm glad he learned from his mistakes, as there's a deep drive into left field by Castellanos, and it'll be a home run, so that will make it a 4-0 ballgame.
@@afridgetoofar1818what was clearly happening behind the scenes was a casual conversation that probably happens more often than we think in the sports broadcasting industry but we don’t know about it. What makes Thom Brennamen stand out is the slur was caught on a hot mic for everyone to hear. That’s it.
@@CNSPORTZEDITZ Yes, and if Brennamen is so willing to say that right in front of his broadcast partner, that clearly _proves_ his partner is also homophobic. What ever happened to him?
He was so genuine about it all, talked about how he used the word growing up, and talked about learning about the kids that get kicked from home. He's said it way better than I've ever heard anyone that's tried redeeming themselves. He should really get a second chance.
I think his apology was sincere and he deserves another chance. he couldve blown it off like nothing happened, but he owned up to it and apologized for it and paid the price.
It’s great we’re holding people accountable for their mistakes. HOWEVER, we also MUST start to give people that’ve made mistakes another chance. What Thom said/did was reprehensible, but it shouldn’t be unredeemable. I think people tend to forget that Thom and so many others that’ve made mistakes are still real people that are only human as well. It’s easy to say I don’t forgive you forever and then move onto your day to day not thinking of it again. Then maybe a year later saying nope still don’t forgive you. All while he’s clearly sorry for what he’s done, and paid the price every day for it, and made positive changes in his life. We need to start allowing these people to grow from their mistakes.
I definitely agree with you. After all, I've heard people say a lot worse than that and get away with it. Someday, I hope to hear Thom Brennaman at least call games for the NFL on FOX again.
Brennaman is a famous announcer who has had 30 years calling professional baseball and football games. He is worth about 3 million dollars from all his time in the broadcast booth. He broke the single most important rule in broadcasting, your mic is always assumed to be hot, and don't say something you wouldn't say to a room full of young kids. He's had his time in the biz and there are plenty of deserving people to fill the role of broadcaster. After 30 years in the biz, let's not give him his coveted job back, with all perks and privilege, just to give him a second chance, when there are plenty of non-millionaires so deserving of a first chance. Give a young, hopeful, would-be broadcaster a chance, who wouldn't dream of saying something as uncouth like Thom said so casually, in full display of his privilege...
It's so weird. People acting like hes not being serious, yet when pewdiepie apologizes no one complains and goes "this is how you do the apology correctly" when thom basically does the same thing. He gets criticized for not being serious.
Lots of young children and immature teenagers like to spam on RU-vid. They are not representative of the majority it just seems that way because they tend to dominate social media sites like RU-vid. Most mature people with jobs and families recognize his sincerity. You can't expect these entitled brats to understand what that means because they've been spoon fed social media garbage since birth.
you know hearing what he said live on air was something I didn’t expect from him, I didn’t think it was in his character, then again I didn’t know much of him outside of broadcasting. but his apology seemed very heartfelt & genuine, and if there’s something to learn from his mistakes, it’s that there’s a drive to deep left field by Castellanos to make this a 4 nothing ballgame.
Jimmy "the Greek" Snyder was cancelled back in the 70's, when, live on air, he said really ignorant things about black athletes. You're just not supposed to say anything controversial about a group of people when you're a sports broadcaster
@@biged680 He said this while thinking he wasn't on air, tried to excuse it as "that's how he grew up"....the man is in his late fifties or 60s...that isn't an excuse. And it has long been held as a disgusting slur. Much longer than just a few years. He wouldn't get any rope for saying the N word. He shouldn't for this F word. And he clearly meant it in an insulting manner meaning his excuses were total BS. he has had a 25 year vendetta against a city and team because they passed over him for someone else. Need any more?
Everything about this is stupid. Everything. It’s stupid that he said that live over the air. It’s stupid that so many people reacted to it in outrage as if they couldn’t imagine that would ever happen. it’s stupid that he’s pretending to be appalled by his own behavior. It’s stupid that people can’t see through the fact that he’s just trying to save his career by doing all of this disingenuous stuff to supposedly make up for his mistake. It’s stupid that people are demanding that he be fired from broadcasting for the rest of his life over this. The whole thing underscores how stupid human beings are on so many levels.
And the takeaway to all this is that there's a deep drive to left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that will make it a 4-0 ball game.
The fact that he's starting a business thats twlling athletes "dont be stupid on air" and will probably make a ton of money for it rocks. I love america so much
Thom Brennaman thinks he "embarrassed a city". Has he not spent years watching the Reds and Bengals? I'm pretty sure he's the least of their problems... LOL!!!
Kobe wasn't expressing hatred of all homosexual people for being homosexual when he used that word. He was using the word as a generic insult. We all know that's the secondary use of the word, and we all know that's how he meant it. I never liked Kobe. He was extremely arrogant. But his incident is not even close to the same as Brennaman's.
Apology accepted! Anyone who says they have never said something they wished they hadn’t are lying. Bad things that happen in our lives can put us on the path to the best things in our life.
I accept this apology! I pride myself as I man of faith so I can accept it, as there’s a deep drive into deep left field by Castellanos that will make a 4-0 ball game. I don’t know if I will comment on this thread again or for this video again.
You can accept his apology, but it doesn't mean he deserves to be a professional broadcaster again. Holding the job is a privilege, not a right. He can feel sorry, and apologize till he is blue in the face, but if he gets his job back, a highly sought-after job, its not really a punishment for breaking a cardinal rule of broadcasting...always assume the mic is hot, and never say anything you wouldn't want a room full of kids to hear. Accountability means accepting the consequences for the actions you choose, and it would be a real slap on the wrist if he just got handed the position again. He's made a few million after 30 years in the booth, time to give someone else a chance...
We all have and sometimes you can never go the same course again because what you said was so damaging. Happens all the time in relationships and life and work.
I really think Brenneman has learned his lesson. After all he prides himself on his faith and thinks of himself as a man of faith - as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos that will be a home run. And so that will make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I'm gonna be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's gonna be for the Reds. I don't know if it's gonna be for my bosses at Fox.
The man brings up when he was a young adult, but there's a huge context difference between using it joking around with your friends and the way he used it here.
Always loved this guy and I think he is sincere in his apology. Everyone says stupid and hurtful things most just don't get caught in the act on live television. It doesn't make anyone a bad person by default, it's just part of human nature. He has a good heart with some personality faults. LIKE EVERYONE ELSE...
I think that's the point. Let's just say the mic wasn't hot, he is still someone who uses that kind of language in front of his coworkers and would have continued to do so. I mean what kind of arrogance must you have to get caught like that. If you have a television mic attached you should immediately speak like your on live tv no matter what. No one is saying he should never work again but when your dumb enough to use that language with even a remote chance of being broadcast to a live audience then you have to pay a stupid tax. In this case the tax is his time in the big leagues is finished.
@@DavidMartinez-pg3zq Right. Do you know how many times I've paid stupid tax and never got one red cent back? He should have spoken his mind and heart, rather than cower to the left when they had some dirt on him. So many people are disgusted and fearful of what these corporations, politicians and schoolboards are pushing onto young children. That doesn't mean you make slurs at people, then apologize and act like the entire community is doing positive things. No, you made you millions and lost your opportunity to make more. Now it's time to be honest and let people know how much you distain what the pride community is doing to children, and families. How is confusing a young child into believing a man is an attractive woman a good thing? These people are selfish cowards. He'll probably get re-hired by MSNBC if he remains determined in his cowardice.
To be perfectly fair, Thom seems like an earnest guy. Seems like the kind of guy who's a decent neighbor, probably a fun co-worker (as long as you fit a certain mold of course), most likely a solid "man of faith", and here's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it'll be a home run, and so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I would be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's gonna be for the Reds, I don't know if it's gonna be for my bosses at FOX, I wanna apologize for the people who sign my paycheck.
You know he seems very genuine and deeply regretful. I’m fully willing to accept his apology as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos it’ll be a home run, and so that’ll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don’t know if I’m gonna be putting on this headset again.
Well to my knowledge as a Brewers fan, Thom didn't even know the headset turned back on after the break when he said that slur I literally hold my laugh.
"well first off I've learned to make sure the hot mic is as chilly as can be before words come outta my mouth, second I would like to send a shout out to the people who sign my paychecks" 🤦♂️🤣
his apology seemed legit, as he as a man of faith and there's a drive into left field by castellanos, it will be a homerun, and that will make it a 4-0 ball game
"I pride myself and think of myself as a man of fatih." "That is not who I am and never has been. I'd I'd like to think maybe I could have some people that could back that up."
Hopefully this episode can be a teaching moment for him and also the people watching and there’s a drive into deep left by castellanos it will be a home run, that’ll make it a 4-0 ballgame
Brenneman will always be my favorite play-by-play but this whole thing is a reminder to always make sure you hit the mute button when youre live streaming
This man has a higher calling. God bless you, Thom, for standing up and being honest and possibly becoming a productive person who fights bias, whether it be bigotry towards race or sexual orientation. Keep learning and carry on with your head up! Fight for equality!
@@nuclearsimian3281I agree but to be fair, he joined the Children’s home of northern Kentucky, which I would say is a pretty notable action, considering most people wouldn’t have even given the apology on air before passing the mic.
Somebody will pick him up, that's for sure.He won't starve. He took his job loss like a man.Dust yourself off and get back in the groove.(Maybe poor choice of words, lol.)
@@soarinskies1105 i hope so im a mets fan and although maybe im being a homer here we have the best tv voices and radio. But this guy brennaman knew his stuff and has a very pleasant voice.
I'm glad he sounds genuinely sorry and seems more aware of why that word is hurtful. Overall, I hate the idea that people are fired for saying one bad thing at one time. I really think that's too draconian of a penalty. People have always said things they regret, or wish they could take back. It really seems like there are people who delight in seeing how many people can have their careers imploded for as small of an infraction as possible. The Majority Rule episode of The Orville is one of the best takes I've seen on social media culture.
Very professional and serious. I’m sure multiple people disagree that he is a man of faith as there’s a deep drive into left field by castellanos that’ll be a home run and that’ll make it a 4-0 ball game.
It gave him enough time to at least announce a home run mid apology. As there is a drive hit into deep left field by castellanos, which will be a home run. So that should make it a 4-0 ballgame.
@@jeffreymcpeak8535 could be self promotion which I think is what you meant. If I truly believe in a cause you bet your bridges ill be talking them up any chance I get to help promote the cause.
@jeremygonzalez2230 Maybe he knows close minded people like you would cancel him so viciously, no questions asked and said it because of that. Nothing wrong there. He knows people like you exist
I remember watching this game, and hearing this over the air. I was stunned. My first thought was “I’ve been watching baseball my entire life, and I’ve heard Thom call hundreds of games. Never once did I ever expect to hear that from him.” I understand what he’s saying as an athlete about how you use certain words you probably shouldn’t around your buddies because you’re just messing around or whatever. You’re young. You’re stupid. You don’t think about what it can do to someone. I think Thom truly means well. I feel like he knows he messed up. He knows he made a mistake. He’s owned up to it. He’s doing great things to try and recover from this. I feel like this is a sincere apology, and I am willing to say that Thom should be forgiven. P.S., to all you making fun of Thom, remember that y’all jumped all over him for saying a word that hurt many people. What do you think your words are doing to him and his family? Choose kindness. Whether you agree with what happened or not. Choose kindness. God bless!
The problem I see here is the world is a bunch of wimps now. Think about the older generations that fought and gave their lives so we could have freedom. Now someone says a word and everybody gets all bent out of shape. Give me a break. If you are someone who is homosexual there’s nothing wrong with that. You are free to live your life and have a great life just like someone who is not. No one should hold that against you. You should be treated with respect just like everyone should be treated. If some guy that you have never met before says a word that you don’t like, who cares? Who cares what he thinks?Get over it
Everybody makes mistakes. Kobe Bryant did the same as many others. Live and learn, Like others He deserves another chance as he is a very good broadcaster.
I made a comment earlier tonight that I guess went out over the air that I am deeply ashamed of. If I have hurt anyone out there, I can't tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart I am so very, very sorry. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos it'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I'm gonna be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's gonna be for the Reds. I don't know if it's gonna be for my bosses at FOX.
I've read many comments here and there seem to be good reasons to forgive him and not to forgive him. I'm transgender so maybe that puts me more in the not forgive him mode but the thing is I remember many years ago saying something stupid to a friend of mine about someone he was speaking with on the phone and the person on the phone heard what I said. So even though I'm part of a minority that gets discriminated against I am not perfect. I forgive Thom Brennaman.
Yeah, I think Thom is a homophobe, but I'd be a hypocrite if I said that I've never used language that would have gotten me in trouble with certain groups of people.
It is very important to Thom that he remains in the national sporting spotlight. I'm not sure of how much of what he says is "sincere" and how much of what he says is "scripted" to fit the narrative of what he should do to slowly scratch his way back into professional sports. I think that people are who they are. I don't fault him for what he said over the waves because I've said worse. He needs to realize through this experience that if feelings about a certain thing or a certain person were easily changed, they wouldn't be true feelings. They would be choices....and vice versa. I understand the game that he feels that he needs to play now, but he is wrong for playing it at the degree that he is. For him to appear to be this (now) understanding and overly compassionate person to young athletes and persons struggling with sexual orientation is an added insult to already a bad situation. He should leave it alone, realize what he has done by walking away at this point, and never make mention of the day that this occurred ever again. I think that people would respect him alot more for that. I know that I would've walked away a long time ago. If he hadn't been caught over the waves, he would've never saw what he said any differently today, but he was caught. Now he feels that he has to "play the game". No he doesn't. Be who you are. The apology (the first time) is all that is necessary. He should've stopped there.
Respectfully, I somewhat agree and disagree. Yes, I believe you are correct that his immediate flip-flop of his "views" isn't very convincing and immediately the term "covering one's butt" comes to mind. However, I think he should talk more about it, but from an honest perspective, which I don't believe he's giving. You see, I think there are probably lines being drawn within the MLB, and sports in general, now with all this flood of new "pride" policies that we are seeing, and naturally, he likely didn't like what he was seeing, the same as I don't like it either. I think many people are feeling hurt, angry, disgusted and scared about the direction our country is headed, and about what politicians, schoolboards, and corporations are pushing onto young children. It truly is disgusting, and wrong, but that doesn't excuse making a slur, which basically says a person is judging every person within a group as being evil, or unworthy of love, as there's a deep drive into left field by Castellanos, and it'll be a home run, so that will make it a 4-0 ballgame.
There for a while I was listening to WBAL through the app on my phone at work. My job allows you to listen to music or whatever with one earbud in. Well anyway there are times when after they're done talking, it plays something like a 3 or 5 second bumper for the station. During this time their mics are on. There's other times when they might be on a commercial that the mics are on. I remember one time listening, one of the hosts mic was on, he said something relating to something in a different story or whatever, well anyway he says, "oh was my mic on that whole time?" "I hope I didn't say anything bad" Like if you're in a radio host job, or a sports newscaster, you're held to the most highest extreme standards. Basically, don't do or say anything that could get you in trouble. Kind of the same with my job, the content you view on the work laptop can be monitored at anytime. I usually use it if I need information about a tool or a part we are using, or if I'm having a conversation about something not related to work, say directions from point A to point B, I might look that up, but no harm done.
Think about this: People only apologize for abhorrent behavior, when they’re caught… I hope he continues to learn what persecution others in the LGBTQ community have experienced.
What’s terrifying is he asked for forgiveness on the air. Received none. Then shifted to full on PR repair, which probably isnt genuine. It’s a lesson to us all. If you fall out of bounds there will be NO ONE to help you. It’s all about conforming to the rules if you do not it’s all over.
many fans of baseball what to forgive and give him the benefit of the doubt....but that comment still hurts so badly, it's already all over the internet
Hire him back don't hire him back makes no difference to me. I just hope he doesn't have to sell the mansion or the summer home. Now that would be sad. Poor Thommy
His apology is bullshit as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos & that'll be a homerun. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I'll be putting on this headset again. Whether that be for the Reds or my bosses at FOX.
Make no mistake. His dad is Mr. Reds in Cincinnati. I’m sure he told people if they destroyed his son he will never have anything to do with the Reds again. Thom will be back on the air after his apology tour.
Of course he's being made to crawl on his hands and knees and apologize, but there isn't really a lesson to learn. He didn't "hurt" anyone. I like him more for saying what he said.
