Making / Throwing a couple of simple pottery pie plates and flan dishes with a fluted scalloped edge on the wheel.
Both similar being that the clay is centered quite flat and the walls are drawn out slowly.
Then the wavy edge is made easily just using your fingers to bend the rim ot the pot over into the fluted shape.

It's crazy, I don't think I'd ever do pottery to be honest, I just enjoy to watch it.. sure it'd be nice to try, but I'm not sure I'd want to really do, put the effort xD

It is really fun but to get good you do have to do it a long time. One thing that I like about pottery though is that there is always something new to learn or improve on.

So beautiful. You do such great work! I can't help think this is just so romantic. Like, "Honey, would you make me an apple pie if I throw you a special baking dish for it?" "Of course, Dear! Just make it that pretty blue color I like and you've got yourself a deal!" Lol How does this affect the skin on your hands? I'm thinking your hands must be baby soft from being in clay all day long, and with all that friction you don't have time to build up and callouses. Perfect way to keep your hands looking young!!

@ytgcs 8 лет назад
I've taken ceramics before and using clay dries out your hands if you work with it on a daily basis due to the all the hand washing and residual clay powder left on your hands. Depending on what type of clay used it may or may not leave small cuts. The clay that I used in class and in a workshop near a museum left me with small cuts on my hands, they weren't bad but they were irritated cause they're as small as paper cuts.
@sissymayemaye
@sissymayemaye 8 лет назад
Lucille Lim ...Really? Huh--learn something new every day, lol. I wonder what's in the clay that would cause cuts? Still would like to take a class though. It seems like such gratifying work!

@connorcaproon451

+Sissy maye maye If it's a fine clay with no sand or grog (grog is broken up clay that's already been fired, then mixed in with wet clay) then you're correct, the hands are left very smooth after the clay has been washed off. IF there is grog, then it may be abrasive to the hands as the previous commenter stated.

Lovely work. How thick are your sides and esp. the bottom? How wide is the plate and how high are the sides? Do you need to trim the bottom or do you just leave it flat?

Hi Dan, what brand of clay do you use? It doesn't look like it creates much slip or absorb much water.
@connorcaproon451
@connorcaproon451 8 лет назад
He throws very quickly, that's why his pots aren't weakened very much by the water. I don't think the brand really matters. It's safer to just use slip instead of drowning the clay in water though.

Where can you buy an actual full pottery kit and how much would it be? I've looked on amazon and all you get are little sets for children 6+ and stuff. I don't know if you'd need to buy an engine worth like £500 or something.
@ThelifeofLauren

you could probably construct a kick wheel potters wheel for not that much.

If you make a pot you could make a fluted edge or do some carving. I find lots of inspiration from Pinterest for carvings and details. One of my favourite designs is sunsets with birds flying over them

@al13davis

Do you dry the centre of these first? I find that if I leave them to dry naturally the rims of plates and dishes can crack?
@airari24
@airari24 8 лет назад
I don't know about him, but I usually leave a plastic sheet or bag over my pieces while they dry (and an extra piece around handles). I leave it rather loosely on so air can get in, but not too quickly. Best wishes!
@connorcaproon451
@connorcaproon451 8 лет назад
If they have slip on the surface or the body is very thick, it has a pretty good chance of cracking. The slip on the surface drys more quickly than the actual body which creates a different rate of drying (which pots don't like)

Look up on google pottery wheel brands and you will probably find some brands and then you can skim through and find what you are looking for. Do the same with clay. Some studios even sell clay and/or wheels
