I hope you find it useful and if you feel I have missed any thing specific please let me know and I will do my best to cover it in another video.
Please continue to comment, ask questions, like and subscribe.
Many thanks for taking the time to watch my videos.

Many thanks for explaining the order of the gasket below the valve and the adjusting ring to position the valve unit so that it doesn’t interfere with the cage.

Hi Daniel. I am told that neatsfoot oil is one of the best to use however as I have never owned any I tend to use three options. 1) if I have plenty of warning I tend to use 3 in 1 oil and leave it to soak for a good day or so. In this instance I try to use a small snap seal bag to contain it as it's easier to give it a good working without getting oil on your hands. I would also recommend using protective gloves when fitting it. 2) If I'm using the lamp when camping and need to moisten and soften an existing leather I tend to use olive or vegetable oil as I tend to have this handy and don't mind getting it on my skin when working it in. 3) at a push WD40 helps to quickly rejuvenate a tired dry washer to get the lamp running quickly. In this video I had the leather soaking in 3 in 1 oil. Hope this helps. Regards, Broadlander

Hi, great videos, helped me reassemble my 246b. Question though, mine isn’t burning very brightly, before I fitted the mantle it was burning evenly but not with as big a flame as your one in the video, I got a good blue flame but it didn’t go as far down the vaporiser as yours and now I’ve put the mantle on the lamp isn’t very bright. Could it be the vaporiser, I took the needle out and gave it a sandpaper as you demonstrate, my needles a bit bent? There’s no leaks anywhere (I replaced all the washers) and I’ve given it plenty of pumps so there’s plenty of pressure. It’s hunting up and down a bit slightly too, more a pulsing kind of thing.

Just bought my first Tilley this afternoon..boxed, original glass great condition. X246B, packing indicates made in NI. Had a bit of a check when I got home. It pressurises and I get hissing at the vaporiser pin hole. The cock works but when I removed it to check the brass block it doesn't seem to move very much. Visually all seals/washers look ok. Actually other than a bit of superficial corrosion on the vaporiser it looks new! Should I get a mantle and heater and fire it up? Anything else I need to check? This is all very nostalgic. My Dad had one of these 50 odd years ago We used it in our hoppers hut out on Kent. The hiss, the smell...I cant wait to get it going!

Hi Broadlander, thank you for your very informative videos. I’m new to lamp collecting and can’t get enough ! What is the purpose of the horse shoe washer on the pump ? On a lamp I bought recently the washer is missing so would an ordinary washer do the job? Thanks again !

Hi, just watched this very informative video, and thank you, I have a question, the pump on my lamp has a brass component under the horseshoe washer and nut , this component has some machined grooves in it , I have a new leather washer ready to fit, no sign of a old washer , is this someone's attempt to modify the pump , it looks like I can simply fit new washer as per your video and discard component, what are your thoughts please, Regards Andy.

Hi what’s the relevance of the horse shoe washer in the leather pump cup, why isn’t it just a normal washer

Hi Broadlander, could you tell me, if, On the X264B Storm Red, the wire cage and silver base plate can be removed, I have a leak coming from under this silver base plate, any advice on this would be delightful. thanks for your time. Sean.
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 5 лет назад
PembrokeshireRocket Hi. The cage and baseplate are a single item but it is designed to be moved and/or removed from the tank. Before you consider doing this are you sure the leak is from below the plate and not from the control cock to tank seal. Please let me know your findings and I will do my best to assist. Any reason why you do not clean the inside of the vaporiser ? Richard.
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 6 лет назад
Zeno elea Hi Richard, The Tilley vaporiser is generally a non serviceable item so I don’t tend to try any cleaning techniques unless it does not run properly after carrying out a full service. I have been extremely busy and not posted any new videos for quite a while but will try to do a new one cleaning a blocked vaporiser in the next few weeks. Regards Broadlander

Hi there, I’m cleaning up a pair of these lamps for camping in the canoe, and have just ordered a few service kits for them- I wonder if from you? Yarmouth was the eBay address! Thanks for the information- I’ve never farted around with paraffin lamps before and you make it nice and simple.

Broadlander exactly who it was- provides a quick and useful service. One of my lamps is perfect, one is very hard to keep from fireballing, even when properly heated. Enlarged vapouriser jet do you think? With the valve set just on the cusp of closing it’s about right. Thanks

Hi Bernie. A couple of options: donate to a scout or youth organisation or sell on FB Marketplace, Gumtree or EBay. Either way they will be passed on to be used or preserved. Regards, Broadlander

Should there be a tiny pin hole in the top of the vapouriser??
@sdg1970
@sdg1970 6 лет назад
Broadlander Thanks mate - I bought 3 of these as a job lot and stripped one down for refurbishment without looking at the others. All are working now, 2 especially so and one (the one in question) has a blueish flame outside the mantle so I intend to put a new vapouriser on it. Thank you again and what a great hobby this is - I should've taken it up years ago!! 😉 👍

What is the purpose of the spring on the needle in vapouriser tube, it does not make sense to me as it would appear to be free floating?
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 4 года назад
alan reid Hi Alan. The needle is used to clean the jet orifice and the spring is to return it to neutral position. You can see this if you remove the vaporiser from the lamp and press the needle down on a hard surface. As you release pressure the vaporiser will rise by the energy stored in the compressed spring. Regards Broadlander
@bigalsblog
@bigalsblog 4 года назад
Broadlander hi, I don’t think that is correct as The spring is free to travel up and down the needle, I am of the opinion that is the way it was designed and the function it is to clean the needle of carbon build up in the vapouriser tube, of course I stand to be corrected, Your comments very welcome

Sorry for the confusion you are absolutely correct regarding the cleaning needle spring, Apologies
@broadlander1398
@broadlander1398 4 года назад
alan reid. I agree it seems otherwise however the spring will only ride up the needle when removed from the vaporiser. Regards Broadlander
