Thank you for this practical way of aiming. I understand it better now.

This works and is a good starting point. However there is a bit more to it, you should do this exercise with the mat placed on the baseline. During a game, when the mat is moved up the line, you cannot use the same targets! My rule of thumb ... if the mat is now moved right up to the front of the line (21 metres) you change your target on the bank by coming in 1 metre towards the centre line (trigonometry gives this). So during a game when the mat is moved to various points along the line you do a mental correction of your targets, all within a metre. If the wind changes during a game you adjust accordingly. Remember that when bowling a long or short end - the bowling angle NEVER changes. I always instruct my leader not to place the mat in the same place on the line, move it about, and roll the kitty to my foot.

I use this technique for demonstrating grass for school groups and learners. However it doesn't work with a cross-wind. Try it and see. With a cross-wind I use the rule that any width you add to the wide (windy) side, you must take off from the narrow side.

This works great if there is a mark or weed on the green near the aiming point, but my club has a perfect green with no marks; how do you deal with this? Thanks

Does the same aiming process apply to any bowls? I have been playing short mat bowls using Vector Vs & this season have played outdoors. Apparently my bowls are mainly for indoors & have a narrow bias but I don’t want to buy another set . Thank you for your informative videos.

As already said it only works on a perfect flat green. When a side goes downwards the aimingpoint will be to far aside. The bowl will never reach the jack then because rolling to that aimingpoint it has to roll upwards on that side at the end.

Surely this would depend on how much you put into the bowl as to how far it will finish away from the jack ?

It depends on the green aswell

When I started bowling I was told several times, to pick a mark on the green and aim at that, but I found it hard to get on target every time. I recently found out, by accident and on my own, to pick a spot on the bank, like the rink markers, and aim at that, and while not yet perfect, my aim has greatly improved, and I get more bowls close to the jack. But I always remember this tip to work out where to aim.

Works assuming ideal perfect symmetrical green. Normally the grass follows the sun and changing during the game/

I can't see how that would work when bowling wide and narrow sides - you'd have to oppose the bowls to their opposite sides!

Why dont players, when they have the last bowl, just kill the jack every time unless they have 3+ points? Since a dead jack results in the end getting replayed, the player could theoretically make an end go on forever by repeatedly killing the jack?

That's clever!!! HOWEVER, it only works on perfect greens, which club greens are not! Sometimes there are dips and areas where the bowl hardly curls, and others where it curls considerably. So I think you really have to 'work out' how each green plays.

Was too narrow and too wide on the two woods delivered. Just saying.

this is bullshit on a couple factors 1) it is different on each rink ie: the mat will be placed different points by the leads, 2) you would not be able to do that in a match ( unless a the teams have trial ends ?) and even then see (1) above some matches are played on all the 4 rinks, you change rink after 8 ends and change the apponents you are playing in the same team
