Two sharp pipe wrenches make the job much smoother. A crescent wrench is really useful for the brass fittings. You’re always working in tight places, so there’s a lot of techniques on how to plan out your work so you can get the job done. Plumbing is kind of a creative process. Sometimes even the best of plans will take a turn in a better way.

I love how you sloppily apply the pipe joint compound so that you get it inside the pipe, eventually making it inside of the gas valve and/or orifice of the heater so that you get a return service call. Great idea for increasing one's business! Thanks for this - I had never thought about it!

Note to self; don’t take piping advice from a gas fitter who runs his piping right in front of a pressure/temperature gauge, applies pipe dope with his finger, uses a pipe wrench with a sales tag still attached and runs a flex connector inside of a wall. Just my 2 cents.

Also, the nipple going through the 2X4 needs to be a couple inches longer. If there is a leak there it'll be harder to spot being buried in the middle of wood.

His way now my way . If he was giving tip then my tip is gas line valve handle should turn into “off” position . This way the crescent wrench has more clearance to grip and turn. He also can assemble the whole line including valve and turn to tighten to save time . Why drill thru the stud when you can add steel clamp and attach to outside of the stub . This way for more space to turn the fitting .

Wow! What an awesome video! First, production value. Your shots are all in sharp focus, tight enough to see exactly what is going on yet wide enough to orient us well so we have context. I really like your voice over, too. By shooting first and doing the voiceover to the video we get a consistent narration explaining the shot and keeping us ready for the next nugget of information. The information you shared was probably better than spending two weeks on the job. You did everything in the order we would be doing them, so unlike Pulp Fiction, we have a logical progression of how we'll be doing our own installations. You knocked it out of the park, and I really appreciate it. The knowledge you shared has given me the confidence to do my own little installation. You are why RU-vid exists. PS: Here's a quote from Mark Twain's letter to the Hartford (Connecticut) gas company. Off the subject a little, but typically humorous as Twain's writings usually were: Dear Sirs: "Some day you will move me to the verge of irritation by your chuckle-headed G-damned fashion of shutting your G-damned gas off without giving any notice to your G-damned parishioners. Several times you have come within an ace of smothering half of this household in their beds and blowing up the other half by this idiotic, not to say criminal, custom of yours. And it has happened again to-day. Haven’t you a telephone?" - Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)

Good information to help a homeowner to understand the process, but may not be a DIY project. Check with your city, county, state, province...etc. before attempting any work on your gas lines. In my province ( in Canada) gas lines can ONLY be worked on by certified professional gas fitters that are accredited by TSSA (Technical Standards and Safety Association). Besides the issues of safety and the heavy fines involved, your homeowner's insurance policy will be null and void (unable to obtain home insurance from any insurance provider in the future) if your handywork is discovered or if damage occurs as a result.

Better to pressurize lines with air at 15psi to check for leaks. Gas is very low pressure (1/4psi ish, depending where you are) so you'll find leaks easier with the air.

Your sediment trap should be as close to the gas valve as possible. Would have been better to have the trap at the next to last elbow, where it goes into the stud (brace). You could have then also secured the extension (trap) to the stud if needed 4:43 point.

Hack. Never ever ever let your pipe wrench bite down and tighten on the threads. No mechanical devices (whips, unions, etc..) inside of a closed wall. Never put pipe dope any closer that 1 to 2 threads from the end of the pipe let alone inside it especially if your not installing a drip leg to catch all of that pipe dope in once it hardens and breaks free. Depending on the pressure your device with have a blockage due to this. I guess you got the job done. Live and learn and saved yourself money and disnt have to pay someone like me to do it

Yellow tape would be a whole lot easier and less messy. Nothing wrong with dope but it's hard as heck to get off your hands afterwards. BTW, yellow PTFE tape is legal in all 50 US states... approved by UL and AGA. Also, agree with others who say you shouldn't drywall over the top of that flex line. Frankly you should have just put an elbow at the start to angle the pipe down away from blocking that gauge, followed by a valve, and then go straight to the flex as you're already plenty close to the heater anyway. As installed though I see nothing wrong other than you should not drywall over the flex. Cheers!
@TSPhotoAtlanta
@TSPhotoAtlanta 5 лет назад
I’m guessing,but it looks like at least 36” from start of this work to the device. That’s a bit far for a flexible hookup. Would like to see 18” or less (with a drip leg!) generally.
@3dsman
@3dsman 5 лет назад
@@TSPhotoAtlanta They don't even sell gas hookup (flex) lines at the big box home improvement stores less than 36". Most common one sold is actually 48". Dryers need some length so you can pull them out from the wall for service or hookup/disconnect. Waterheaters have short hookups for obvious reasons (they don't get moved).

It's a good video to see how you tighten pipes but there were a few things that didn't seem well thought out. 1. the flexible cable between the studs 2. the pipe through the stud is too short and 3. not aligned with elbow, looks crooked 4. blocking the pressure gauge makes no sense. 5. so messy with the paste which is indicative of the complete design

Thanks for this video, I did just about everything you did to install a grill and I'm going to make everything tighter (though there are no leaks). Is it possible to have black pipe all the way to the heater? That is, if the heater never had to be moved? Does this heater have a chimney or an outside vent? I would like a heater like that in the garage but I don't like the idea of no outside vent (and possible carbon monoxide).

@slick703
@slick703 4 года назад
vipe d if you were giving tips on how to install gas pipe you failed to mention that concealing a flexible gas appliance connector in a wall is against almost all local gas codes in the United States and Canada, and in this case you should’ve used black iron pipe to tie in the non movable gas appliance, but you took the easy way out, you used fittings and nipples made in China that were more than likely bought from a civilian diy store, real gas fitters do not shop there even in a pinch, dried out pipe dope from the 90’s, you didn’t buck any of the other gas pipe while tightening, didn’t mention that you need to inspect and clean the threads before applying a suitable pipe dope, pull a permit, get it inspected by your local land development commission, you didn’t mention anything about pressure testing new branches, I install new gas pipe and repair diy jobs like this everyday, as a professional seeing this video gives me joy because you give people confidence to tackle a task themselves that should be done by a professional and it keeps us busy, and in the end the wife calls the local gas company because she smells gas while the husband is at work and they shut the gas off because there are hell a leaks everywhere, then the professionals come in to save the day, do it right, take all that BS Home Depot gas pipe and fittings out and install high quality stuff that doesn’t fail, i don’t use any gas pipe or fittings unless it’s made in the USA we are not allowed to for most jobs, and follow all local, state and International fuel gas codes, A code inspector would have seen that and failed it immediately, you should not gamble with natural gas unless you are a trained professional, that is how things can go from happy to sad, good video though.
