Very true. My father would tell us the same, and one of the stories he told to emphasize the point is a time he got one of these feeling on the highway, that he needed to drop further back from the 18 wheeler just before the tire blew and threw a large chunk where he would have been. While I've had my own experiences with it, i haven't had any that memorable.

Decades ago when a field employee of HP, we were provided with a company car. Before we drove away, we were given a short driving lesson by a pro in the back lot of our building. He specifically taught us about NOT stopping right behind the car in front of us for the exact reason you mentioned: it prevents you from maneuvering should there be a reason to maneuver quickly out of the area. Good tip that I have always observed since that training. AND like she said in the video: ALWAYS lock your car as soon as you get into it.

my dad taught me the same thing about keeping distance between bumpers when he was teaching me to drive as a teenager. so grateful for that

Yep, and be wary of any car with a driver or, especially with a few people in it just sitting there idling. I once parked my car and just felt odd about an idling car a few spaces over. So, I walked toward the store, then doubled back down another row to find the people who were in the idling car trying to break into my car. Beware of what I call 'headlight idlers' who sit in a car in a parking lot idling away for no reason. Yes, they may just be waiting for someone, but all too often they are waiting for an opportunity to break into your car.

Great start... also, look under your and adjacent vehicles. If possible, park your car so when you get ready to leave you drive out instead of backing out [it's called "combat parking"]. Always a great idea (especially) for the ladies, get some form of 'close quarters training', Krav Maga, Brazillian ju- jitsu, mui thai, tai kwon do. If ever in a fight, do your best to NEVER go to the ground and be on your back, hard to throw a "powerful" punch up from there. Go for the eye's! If attacked do not scream HELP... *SCREAM FIRE! And then squeeze that trigger*. Hope you've practiced your "double taps" Well, you [warned] your attacker when you said "fire". Oh, train with your weapon often as possible and in various conditions/scenarios... left/right hand, even the variety of clothing and shoes you wear. Keep 'em in the 10 ring!

Fyi, most women's thighs are stronger then arms. Yes on the ground is bad however I have saved my own a** using the power of my thighs to punch my legs at the sucker enough that they were stunned/dazed and I could get away. In an emergency situation every inch of your body has to become a weapon and needs to be furled as such.

And I was taught to keep my keys between my fingers to be able to scratch at an assailant. Also less likely to accidentally drop them.

Great tip! I did this and the mechanic showed me how to adjust the settings myself using the menu on the steering wheel (nissan). That feature was really getting on my nerves. You can set it to auto-unlock when you turn off the ignition OR just disable the feature all together.

I was able to change mine by reading the owner manual of my car.

Most cars have RU-vid tutorials on how to change your car's door lock settings.

I think part of the problem is that people assume a gas station is very safe because it's well-lit. That is NOT the case, at least in areas with a high population density. Criminals aren't afraid of lights.

If you're walking at night, it's a good idea to have a flashlight in your hand, or at least somewhere you can quickly deploy it. I always have one clipped on my pocket. You can leave it off, but if something doesn't feel right you can quickly shine a bright light at it. Where I live, I'm probably shining a light at some raccoon or opossum sniffing around my chicken coops, but city folks or even surburban folks might end up scaring off a larger predator of the two-legged variety. Somebody who means you harm at night is looking to ambush somebody and get away unseen. Getting a bright light shined on them, followed by a confident and stern "stop" behind that light, they've certainly lost the element of surprise, and that might very well just be enough deterrence on its own. If somebody doesn't stop, then you've accomplished identifying your target, and established that force might be necessary. Weapon lights are good, but having a light separate from that which you can use to look around, while your gun stays in its holster, is generally a good idea. I think of it like the floodlights I have around my home, on motion sensor. Anybody comes in range (it's always deer, lol) the whole outside of my house lights up like a Christmas tree. Somebody trying to get in has to know that they're going to be seen the whole time they're figuring out their best way in. And if I'm coming home at night, when my vehicle gets into the driveway I know for sure nobody's lurking around there in the dark and nobody's recently gone inside.

I was just commenting on a post about advertising, or NOT advertising that you have guns or are an advocate of carrying. I joined the NRA a few years ago and they sent me a few stickers to put on my cars. Umm,,,, No. That just opens me or anyone driving those vehicles to potential trouble. If I were to tell everyone I know I have lots of weapons in my home, that would be an invitation for potential thefts. How would you feel if your guns were stolen and the cops should up asking about a murder your gun was linked to. Silent but deadly,,, that's what is really happening.....

@@jamesw4445 TOTALLY Disagree - the attacker knows that the 2A/NRA shirt granny is the only clear threat so takes her out first. Then attacker expects the intimidated sheep to line-up. The BEST case scenario is that the attacker *assumes* that some unadvertised granny is NO threat, treats her like a common sheeple - then is dramatically surprised at exactly the WRONG moment. Not advertising your force capability is a VERY serious advantage. Giving this info away for free is for dum-dum macho types. - IOW *bad* tactic.

This reminds me of how effective tactical flashlights are at night. Super bright with a strobe pointed directly at your face at night can be real disorienting. And the period of disorientation buys time to respond. As far as i'm aware, they don't need any kind of permit to carry anywhere.

@@nate2838 A flashlight is a defensive weapon even little kids can legally carry. People overlook how valuable they can be at just deterring violence.

Lock/unlock settings can be changed in the setup. I didn't want the car to unlock when in park due to the safety concerns.

Oh wow yes my old car i couldnt lock til it was out of park. So id have to rush get in put in drive n lock my doors. Glad i no longer own that car.

ASP is a great channel. I save and watch it all the time.

I do the same for my 7 year old daughter. I hope she remembers it when she grows up.

@@jeffgreer198613 just stick with her "training" over the years and I'm sure she will. It's an amazing memory I have with be my father even though at the time I wasn't completely sure why he was teaching me things.

@@jeffgreer198613 Yeah, just keep reinforcing it. Have her count exits when she goes into a room. It'll become second nature to always look for them. Have her count how many people are wearing t-shirts, vs. button shirts, like it's a game. Keep it fun. How many hats? Does she know without having to look around again? How many people with glasses? Are there more men or more women? Have her point out fire extinguishers and AEDs, too. When she gets older, and understands more about the world, she'll already have those built-in observational skills, and can apply it to other things. And kids learn by example. With mine, I just sort of talk about what I'm seeing, what I'm thinking, just in daily life as we go around, and I include those sorts of observations I'm making to keep us safe and able to best respond to things. That way they know I consider it important to notice stuff like that. They hear me say it, see what I'm looking at, and remember all the other times I did the same. When they notice things before I do, and mention it, they get rewarded with praise at having beaten me. We're homeschooling, so this is a 24/7 kind of thing for us. When we go camping, we talk about navigation, how not to get lost, how to survive if we do. How important fire safety is, and how to put one out, while we're at the campfire. In the kitchen making meals, we talk about burns and how to treat them, or how to stop a bleed if we cut ourselves with a knife. We talk about the Heimlich maneuver when we're eating our lunch as a family, and CPR is a natural progression from that, as is bursting out singing "Stayin' Alive" as a family (which is the right tempo for chest compressions, by the way). There's always things to learn, that can help them be safe, be aware of their surroundings, and what to do in an emergency. The most valuable skill in an emergency is remaining calm, and calmness comes from knowing what to do. When people don't know what to do in an unexpected situation, they panic, and make bad decisions. I can't shield them from every danger, and leave them ignorant and vulnerable. I can just give them the confidence to handle those dangers, and prepare themselves for as many things as possible.

That's something I never really thought of. Also I try to be the grey man. I try not to draw attention to myself. There is a book about how to be a grey man.

My husband wants me to carry… I just started looking at guns…because of a crazy hostile guy approaching me leaving my moms house.. I WAS MAD OF MYSELF BECAUSE I DIDN’T LISTEN TO MY HUBBY BUT EVEN MORE NOTHING in MY PURSE FOR PROTECTION… So shopping We Go…Was also very scary hope your wife reads this and it helps her. I was scary to carry too but NO MORE.

Same here, also lock it when you pull up to get gas then get out iso only the driver door is unlocked. I've seen videos of people stealing from an unlocked car while pumping gas. Great video and tips.

@@tomdixon2959 My filler is on the passenger side on one car and the rear in another. I just make it a habit to lock all the doors when I get out to pump gas.

@@tomdixon2959 Some years ago, our daughter stopped for gas coming home from work after dark. She always prepaid with cash inside instead of at the pump. Rag top Geo Tracker, doors locked. After she came out and pumped gas on driver's side, she discovered when getting back in car that her purse had been stolen from the passenger seat. Thief had cut plastic rear side window with a knife, reached in and unlocked front door, and made off with purse. Lost and had to replace all her personal IDs and cards. Major pain. If you leave purse in car, put it on the floor with a dark shirt over it.

Hah I always look in the back seat. I've seen too many horror movies...
