I can give the deal on Elvis in a nutshell. Elvis himself was not racist at all and a lot of the older black musicians appreciated his existence because it opened doors for them. However, he was surrounded by a lot of people and many of them were about as racist as you can get. Not his fault and when he was confronted with it, he didn't tolerate it. There is an interview with one of his backup singers where she says when they went to Dallas Elvis was told he could "keep the colored girls at home." He told them if they don't perform he doesn't perform. Not only were they there but he drove them out in a top down convertible, with them sitting on top of the back seat waving to the crowd.

@@TheLoos3Goos33 - Try not being surrounded by racists now! LoL. When people like Bill Burr ( and I sincerely like his comedy, just not the garbage here in this video ) spout this ignorant non-sense, staining someone's legacy, with the stupid politically correct stance that of course he doesn't catch the "subtle" racism he alludes to in this video, but his wife, BECAUSE she is black, is OBVIOUSLY right. ( YES...if he's trying to avoid an argument with his wife, then fake it 'til ya make it. But, if we're being serious about this content and critique of Elvis, which IMO Bill is doing in passing along a social commentary, then F*#@ Bill Burr on this point. Not hating on him nor his wife, but they are unwittingly playing into the same backwards re-gressive posture of default White Guilt. I guess I'm in the minority on this one, but it is yet another form or "subtle racism". Touché.

I may be in the minority here but I don't look at any group taking influences from another group as "cultural appropriation" in the vast majority of circumstances. I prefer to call it "cultural incorporation", and frankly it's a good thing in my opinion for every group of people to incorporate influences from other groups into their own culture. It's how we get closer to being "one people"

James Brown and Elvis were such close friends that at Elvis funeral James spent a half hour alone with him before they let the people in to see him. Elvis grew up very poor and was singing in a black choir foe r a few years. He never forgot and was always standing up for the black community even though it was very unpopular in the south in th 50's.

As someone else said, do watch Elvis and the black community video. It was a real eye opener for a lot of reaction videos for black people. A lot was said about Elvis being racist, it's obvious from this video, that he was the opposite. He sang in a gospel church growing up. He stood up for his African American girls backup group in Texas, refusing to perform if they didn't join him there.

I have a lady who is able to sift through my BS and see the real me, and she protects that. You guys are great! ❤️ Enjoyed your reaction on Elvis via Bill Burr. Just wanted to let you know a couple of things: MJ was also influenced by Sammy Davis Jr. there are certain dance moves that he does that are easy to spot in MJ! And yet, MJ was MJ. Beautiful and special in his own unique way. I’m a musician and part of being a musician is emulating, copying, transcribing and sometimes literally taking particular licks and techniques from our musical heroes. The idea is to learn and then with enough different influences and work, to become a great version of one’s self. It is never (or seldom) called “cultural appropriation” within the musical community because it is expected and understood that by emulation, that is how we learn. The problem with the term “cultural appropriation” is that it has a lot of gray areas to it because if we take it to its logical conclusion, we’d have to go back to the first man/woman. That would be an exercise in futility. For example, Afro Cuban music (I’m Cuban born) obviously has as one of it’s foundations, the great rhythmic heritage of Africa but it also has other influences such as European and American harmonic influences too. So where do we stop saying it is Cuban vs African? Does not the time honored investment of the Cuban people and their culture deserve some credit and respect too? And if so, at what point does it become theirs?? It’s a tricky question. So the point being that as long as we always acknowledge and respect as best possible all the great heritages we have inherited and give due deference to them, all should be good. It’s when we do NOT do it that we get ourselves into trouble. Ultimately, respect, love and enlightenment must always be at the core of the foundations of our arts.

The "Moonwalk" that was a dance move that was invented back many decades ago, was created by a Mr. Bill Bailey.
@vovindequasahi
@vovindequasahi 2 года назад
The reason he was called the King of Rock n Roll, is because it was his mixture of bluegrass and the blues that really became known as Rock n Roll. He was surely not the only one doing that at the time though, but he was the one that had the stroke of luck to be the first to become mainstream with the style. Saying that _adopting_ a style of music or dance because they love it is not _stealing_ it. That would mean that all music for example using palm-muting in their guitar riffs are stealing that style from the first person who did it. That is ludicrous to say. To make it racially profiled is just ugly and a big problem that betrays the true intentions of the people who keep on bringing up the race card. I call it appropriating Human Beings! If you love something, you will of course imitate it in your art!

I don’t know all that much about Elvis. But from some of the interviews I’ve seen on here it basically seems to come down to everyone that was directly around Elvis new he was not racist and would defend that. He liked rock and the blues and even tho certain radio stations refused to play his “n***** music” or wouldn’t want to book him cause he had black back up singers, he stood true and gave the genre the attention it deserved. He made black music popular to white people. Which in turn also helped some black artists since more people would look into their music after finding out that Elvis covered their song. He actually DID credit black people as often as he could, but often times radio stations would cut the parts where he gave credit because they didn’t want to have black art being promoted on their shows. So because most of this wasn’t seen by the public he got a bad rep for stealing the music when really he had many black friends in the industry to stood by him because he was a good person and helped them and stood up for them every chance he could. It’s sad how much media can affect how the rest of the world views their character.

By covering their songs Elvis indirectly (:if not directly ) influenced a white person like myself, who has always been curious about the roots of music to discover Big Mama Thornton "Hound Dog" and Arthur Crudup " That's Alright Mama", that I otherwise would have never heard of.

Elvis did give a shout out to the black performers of the day (who were also his friends). His motive was to bring a spotlight to the music, dancing, and culture of his fellow performers who were being "ignored" due to their being black. Elvis got a lot of flak for that and was pressured to "tone it down." As a result his support of the black community became a bit more subtle. All of this has been confirmed by those black performers (e.g. James Brown and Little Richard).

This video and actually a lot of videos of this clip end to early. It goes on a little longer and then it makes sense. I saw a video where they included that last bit. And it is a perfect ending of the clip.

Very good reaction especially about MJ at the end. He got his moves from James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Sammy Davis Jr, and Elvis as you pointed out.

Great comment! Without black culture America would be a dull place that’s for sure.

@@VintageReplay Ha! No, it wouldn't. Pretty bigoted, actually to say that. PLENTY of fine European culture and influence, let alone from other parts of the world contributing to American Culture. BUT...Thank God for Black Culture. Many artists, actors, musicians, bands, thinkers, preachers have blessed this nation, have been a blessing upon my life. Just please don't be elitist, or worse, about it. Jimi Hendrix deeply respected Stevie Ray Vaughan's talent, and vice versa. I'll go with their example FTW.

You NEED to watch Elvis and the Black Community....A MUST! He refused to play the Astrodome when they told him to leave the black people in his group home.

There is very informative video that many react to Elvis and his relationship with Black people, and where he grew up and what they thought of him when they worked with him

At this point so much has been done in music, art, fashion, etc. it’s difficult to create something that doesn’t resemble something that’s been done in the past. Everyone gets inspiration from everyone. If it’s okay for one person, or one dance move, or one industry, or one culture, it should be okay for everyone, we shouldn’t be able to pick and choose. As long as the person isn’t completely copying another artist’s work.

For me , if it happens in this country , it's part of my culture. I can't exclude anyone ! It's American culture.. I really don't care who came up with it. Whatever I'm drawn to I'm gonna do. If it's music, arts, sport, food,.holidays ... I claim it all !

I have to say that after just getting started with the video she said that that's why Bill Burr tells the jokes but what he said was one of the funniest things I think I've ever heard "when you got to go you got to go."

Elvis always gave a shout out and there are lots of examples of this. He publicly declared, on several occasions, that Fats Domino was the real king of rock n roll. FYI there is a video on you tube comparing Elvis and Michael Jackson and another showing how MJ took a lot of inspiration for his moves from Fred Astaire (smooth criminal is almost move for move taken from the film Bandwagon) all the best artists have eclectic tastes and take inspiration from others. It's not stealing, it's being inspired ❤

Would love to see you guys react to The First Ever Recorded Medal Of Honor." Its the story of US Special Forces Airman John Chapman and how he saved the lives of 23 comrades. The events were captured from the air by a drone. Amazing story that will really get your American spirit going.

Elvis covered many artist songs white and black. Blue suede shoes for example was Carl Perkins song but its instantly associated w/ Elvis. Why? Because Elvis had an "it" factor Carl didn't. He covered Tutti Fruity by Little Richard but you still think of Little Richard when you think of that song because Richard had star power too. Anyone can sing a song but it's how they sing it. It's about their carisma, their talent level, and star power. Elvis just had it in spades. However, he had to overcome adversity as well after all, older whites said he was immoral and the devil because he sang "black music". But he never called himself King and always praised blues and gospel singers and said it was that combo that made rock n roll. He also didn't marry a minor they met in Germany when she was 14 but started dating when she was 17 and married when she was 21. And she is still incharge of most of his business decisions today

Check out old Fred Astaire movies from the 30s, where you’ll find the beginnings of practically all later adopted dance moves one way and another. He choreographed all of his own routines. Also be sure to check out The Nicholas Brothers from the same era, whom you will unfortunately see a lot less of due to the cinematic racism at the time.
