The importance of each band member has been debated ad nausium. Simply stated, CCR was like a championship football team with a Heisman Trophy winner in John and other capable and important, role players. It takes guys with all talent levels who come together to have a championship season.

The sad fact is that John gave CCR the sound that made them famous but it ended up wrecking his and Tom’s relationship. Maybe Tom felt slighted and jealous, since he had led the previous bands (Tom Fogerty and the Blue Velvets and the Golliwogs) but they had little success.

John got screwed over bigtime by Saul Zaentz, owner of Fantasy Records and lost millions and millions of dollars and ownership of the songs that he wrote. He was even sued by Zaentz for plagiarizing his own song (Old Man Down the Road/Run Through the Jungle). His brother Tom and the other two guys sided with Zaentz. John, rightfully felt betrayed and never forgave them. Yes, he probably held a grudge for too long which affected his mental as well as his physical health but we never walked in his shoes. I'm glad John is back performing those great songs. I saw him earlier this year in Las Vegas and he was better than the two times I saw CCR back in the 60's.

I’ve seen Creedence Clearwater Revisited and I’ve seen John Fogerty in concerts. Revisited sounded more like CCR, than John Fogerty and his back up band; you can’t replicate the rhythm section with others; Stu’s bass and Doug’s drumming is CCR. Another thing, John’s voice is sadly NOT the same anymore. But even worse, those that replace Tom, Stu, and Doug to back up John, just don’t play and sound like CCR. I enjoyed seeing and HEARING Creedence Clearwater Revisited; a better show than John and others.

What I am tired about is your posts insinuating John Fogerty is this, and John Fogerty is that. You like Tom Fogerty? That is great. He probably was a very nice chap! Why don’t you start threads about Tom’s contributions to the band? He made a few albums & had some decent songs! His contributions in Creedence were limited, however, before he bailed on the other 3 members he was a good part of the band. John Fogerty could help it that John could write better music then Tom. That is not a slight on Tom, just how history played its hand out. Don’t forget, Tom Fogerty tried to get them back together sometime after he bailed& after he realized he really couldn’t make it as a solo act. Again, not a knock on Tom, just facts!

@jimlabos
@jimlabos 4 года назад
Rusell Shaw sorry but John wrote the songs, arranged the songs, played guitar on the songs and then sang lead vocals on all the songs. The rest of the band whatever you may think of them was not that great. This was not a group with equal talents. It was John at 99% talent. It want like the Beatles where John and Paul we’re the main creators but then George showed himself to be quite a talent for writing and Ringo cane up with the perfect parts. CCR was filled with envy of John and when he finally gave them the reigns because they were constantly complaining that he was too bossy the music became shit. If they had had some humility and true love for the guy they would still be a band and maybe Saul would not have gotten away with so much. CCR without John is nothing as evidence shows. John without CCR is still John as evidence shows.

Listening to Creedence again now, in 2017, it really shows how much they needed each other to obtain their "sound". Everything all the band members did on their own, post breakup, didn't measure up to what they put out as Creedence Clearwater Revival. As John Fogerty controlled every musical thing and wrote lyrics to the songs, it is always looked upon as "his" band which, I think, is not accurate at all, upon hearing all aspects of the music. and what the other three contributed. As John found out, you can't hire musicians to duplicate what the other three members brought to the whole of the sound. If you read everything out there from all band members' perspectives, you'll probably see, like I did, that one huge reason for the breakup was John's inability to manage the band's financial affairs. Oh, it's easy to use the old cliché that they were "screwed by their record label", but John insisted on being "manager", but knew nothing about business and recording contracts and, in effect, was ultimately responsible for screwing himself (and his bandmates) out of the millions they so rightly deserved.
@drummersagainstitk
@drummersagainstitk 7 лет назад
Respectfully, I've no idea where your source was that he managed the band's financial affairs. Stu, Tom and Doug didn't want to do anything about anything. John was a driven SOB and he did produce the "goods" in every aspect and they hated him for it. That is unfortunate for them but you can't blame John for it. Any musician changes will change a bands internal sound. When things become huge things get distorted. How it played out behaviorally was not smart by Stu, Doug and Tom. Remember.... the genius is intrinsically in the tune. NOT WHO PLAYS IT.

@W Hartzell I’ve seen Creedence Clearwater Revisited and I’ve seen John Fogerty in concerts.

They're saying he was a piss poor manager. Could he have hired guys today, sure but, at the time, the other guys had been through the dive bars, $20 nights etc and felt like they were just as much CCR as John. On his deathbed, Tom blamed John for breakup. That says it all!

John wrote all the hit songs. Pretty much every song, until the "Mardi Gras" album where Doug Clifford & Stu Cook removed all doubt who had the song writing talent. John also arranged Grapevine & Suzie Q. The band was first called "Tom Fogerty & the Blue Velvets," and Tom was the lead singer. Sibling rivalry can be a bitch and holding grudges is an "emotional cancer" that never ends well. Record companies are notorious for being too greedy and controlling over a product they have very little hand in creating. John was robbed of tens of millions of dollars. The saddest part of it all was the years that fans were robbed of the music they could have possibly been recording together. Keep On Chooglin, John Fogerty! Your songs will go on for a long long time. Contrary to the last comment, your significance is monumentally evident to any true fan of yours in CCR and beyond.

"You always hurt the one(s) you love." Theirs is sibling story (we all have one or two) that got complicated by outsiders, like their record producer. My guess is that the producer wouldn't release John because of his songwriting ability, and John said in an interview that they were "depressing" years, when he wasn't performing, and especially so because his brother "sided" against him in the dispute.

Rich ? Famous ? John Fogerty made them neither Rich nor Famous. John Forgerty believes he was every thing in that band and gives no credit to people that struggled with him and supported his music as a team since the mid 50's. Its the mentality of a Plantation owner with no appreciation for those who slaved to achieve his plans. I worked for a guy ..I think he was from Haiti..I somehow was directed by my mom to assist this guy in renovating the Laundromat she worked at during the day..the guy needs someone to assist him. Work had to be done at night after Laundry closed.So I was in there assisting this dude for 11-12 hours a night till Laundry opened i the morning...Drop Ceiling..Wall Paneling..Tiles..it was for around 10 days..in the end Im hoping to get paid some modest amount and the guy doesnt pay me.When he was confronted the guy says why should I give him my money..it's my job, my company, I did everything..That's what this John Forgerty dude reminds me of. Not to mention every thing he did on his own Post CCR was rubbish.. Look at me Centerfield..oh brother..just rubbish. That band CCR was r o c k i n and he was the main man but he wasnt everything..and all that popular stuff he put out on his own just really sucked.

@@merseybeat1963 You are either joking or extremely ignorant. John was the writer of all of the tunes! The rest of the guys tried to screw him and stabbed him in the back. They played the game and lost in the the end although John had to go through al of the court bs. You want proof? What have these guys done? They were basically a cover band of themselves. Why? Because John was 99% of CCR. Any of the guys in the band could have been replaced by any mediocre musician. They shoudl have kissed his ass for getting a job in that business. Listen to Tom. He can hardly put 2 words together. He has the sophistication of a primary school kid. He was lucky that John let them keep the name CCR. If you think otherwise then you are welcome to go to a CCR concert and find someone singing as good as John sings the songs. HE WROTE THEM, ARRANGED THEM AND PLAYED GUITAR AND SANG THEM. The only crap album that the band made was theone where he let them have control. It was a total wreck and they could not admit it as their ego wouldn't allow it. This is what happens to a lot of bands where there is one major creator and the rest of the guys think somehow they are entitled to an equal share. Post CCR was rubbish? Then you are really ignorant. John was sued for sounding like himself. Such was the hatred with these guys. Imagine being sued because you sounded like yourself. Luckily John won the case. John sounds like John Fogerty and John Fogerty sounds like CCR period. I usually don't comment on these band feuds but this one hits home as a songwriter. These guys are akin to Ringo Starr suing Paul or John for their solo songs after the Beatles ended. Yes I know it was CCR's Publisher that sued but the guys in the band were 100% behind him and stabbed John in the back. So don't go telling us John didn't make them rich or famous. They made a hell of a lot more money than they would have made on their own. Certainly the fame they attained had all to do with CCR and John was CCR. This interview was done in 1986! Now where is CCR now? Poof! Nowhere. Where is John Fogerty? Still playing and living hapilly with his family (and playing with his kids who at least will not stab him in the back like his brother). Greed enters where talent leaves.

@@jimlabos But he didn't make them rich and famous..because they are not rich and famous. What are you saying man ! They were a T E AM playing together since 1959..Nineteen fifty nine..they hit it in 1968.. they went through all that struggle and crap lifestyle for most of those nine years backing up and supporting John Fogerty ..(The John Fogerty Project)..through thick and thin. Yet JF thinks it was all down to him. After CCR he was never as big as CCR right..I dug CCR a lot..they were freakin good..but that solo revival period he had for a few years..that stuff sucked to my ear. Talking about the Beatles..this is similar to Pete Best sticking it out with them for all those years living like sht and them kicking him out just at take off..which was understandable to get the additional Octane Ringo provided..but when they made millions to not show any appreciation to Best at all was DEAD WRONG. They threw him a bone 25 years later only because they had to..The boys were just too greedy to give him some due..Sir Paul held tight to the one or two million he could have given to Pete for his years of service..instead Sir Paul pissed it off so much easier the many millions to the wood legged gold digger. Those Ex.CCR guys are not rich..and not famous. Be well.

Are you referring to the signing over the voting rights to Zaentz? That happened two years after this interview, after Tom learned that he was dying. Zaentz swooped in to take advantage of the situation to offer him money to offset his medical bills and provide for his wife and kids. Zaentz was also leading Tom on by making him think he was going to use Tom's "Unbearable Lightness of Being" song in Zaentz' movie of the same name. Zaentz played Tom like a fiddle to get revenge against John for leaving his label.

Never met Tom, but can assure you that John had tremendous respect and real admiration for his older brother as both the spiritual and guiding bandleader of CCR! (The bandleader runs the band, even if little brother is the Star)! My bands backed and hosted John through the years of 75 - 80 a couple dozen times and Mr. Fogerty was always respectful and loving towards both of his brothers. Brother Bob was John's right-hand man and nicer brothers you couldn't ask for. Never a loud or cross word between them. I have 5 brothers and these guys were always close. When you create something as inspirational as most of John's song are, you can feel eternally wronged when band mates minimize you and your source of said inspiration. Tom somewhat intentionally tried to hurt John, to put little brother in his place, once and for all, just before he passed away. That was so much later in their lives, the 90's and I am sure Tom wanted to heal the wound between Saul and John. John first sat in with my band in 1975, unannounced but welcomed as a sideman. Though already a qualified band leader, he took direction as good as the best when he was playing lead or backup with my band. He kicked the crap out of "Play that Funky Music" when it was on the chart and my band played it. Great guy, personable, smart and bitter only towards businesses that try to ENSLAVE the naïve and unsuspecting "Golden Goose", like they're entitled to it because they are crafty, and young people are dumb. John had the "vision" and that is the reason CCR split. Tom told John that he (Tom) had lost control of CCR, that Pendulum had derailed them, as it wasn't Creedance anymore. And now was a good time for Tom to launch his own material. FACE IT: Greedy, older business types kept these guys at logger heads with each other, turning them against each other for decades, to Tom's end and longer. Saul is gone and his Son is in charge and loves John, so this is a Happy Ending. All of CCR are very nice and talented people and just need our respect not criticism.
