The thing is about Loki's brood. They're in the form of their greatest greed. all are formless. Should Fenrir lose his greed the ribbon shall no longer bind him. At least that's what I take from the tale in the Children of Odin (book based on the Edda's and folklore).

@@jakey4931 Hi there, as far as I can recollect there is no specific mention of what you say, only that the rope Gleipne (Gleipnir) was made from "things nobody can find"; The breath of a fish, a womans beard, spit from a bird, the mountains roots, the sounds from a cats paw and the bears sinews. Gleipne will not break before the time of Ragnarok and Fenrir will be free. Read and translated a lot of Edda and the other texts in school. On Dwarves, you should of added that they were greedy and very good armor smiths, Thor's Hammer is made by Dwarves for instant, and there is one Dwarf known as Fafnir who was greedy for gold and gems, and was cursed and turned into a dragon, guarding his treasure. This was also the inspiration for Smaug, when Tolkien wrote ''The Hobbit''.

Absolutely correct. In fact, when tying up Fenrir they disguised it as a challenge of the wolf's strength. Fenrir, somewhat skeptical of the string they brought when he'd passed that test twice with heavy chains, demanded one of the gods place their right (dominant) hand in his jaws as proof that they'd let him go should he be unable to break free. Tyr was the only one willing to do it, and when Fenrir realised that he couldn't break the chains and the Aesir had no intention of letting him go, he bit off Tyr's hand, forcing the god of war to learn to do everything with his left, which probably won't help him in Ragnarok when he achieves a mutial death with Hel's hound Garm.

Actually Tyr already lost his hand to Fenrir, in order to capture him (since he is as smart as a man and don't trust easily) they convinced him that they would not capture him in a trap. But in order to make him trust the Norse gods Tyr had to put his hand inside his mouth, as the trap sprung and Fenrir was put in irons, so to did Fenrir's jaws close and Tyr lost his hand. Now calling himself the master of one armed combat. (I think this is accurate, if not, then I apologise).
@lkj53
@lkj53 8 лет назад
I read that they tried to bound Fenrir three times, he broke the chains the first two times and on the third time they used magic. The third chain was crafted by the Dwarfs and Fenrir felt the magic, so to earn his trust Tyr put his hand in Fenrir's mouth. When he couldn't break the chains, he bit off Tyr's hand and the gods placed a sword in Fenrir's mouth to keep it open.

@VOLKHVORONOVICH

Indeed. Knowing of the prophecy that Loki's spawn would be at the kill at Ragnarök, they abducted the three children from their mother, Angrboða [the Bringer of Amguish]. Hel, who never smiled [you wouldn’t smile either if above the waist you looked alive but below your body was a corpse], Odinn cast into Hel, that lies near Niflheim. There she would guard and rule over the dead-all that did not die in battle. Jörmungandr, was thrown into the sea, where unrestrained he grew so great as to encompass the earth beneath the waves. But Fenrir, the Fenrisulfr, Odin thought could be tamed and so he kept him with them. But daily the Wolf grew and the Gods feared. Only Tyr had the courage to feed the Wolf and there was a certain trust between them. The Gods decided the Wolf must be bound [they who would fight against their fate often find they have brought it to pass]. They brought to the Wolf a chain called Laeding challenging him to test his strength. He broke through it easily; the broken chunks of chain went flying with a crack like thunder. They brought again a second chain called Dromi. The Wolf sniffed at it and though it was visibly stronger he knew he had grown stronger as well. “One can gain no fame without taking some risks,” he growled. This chain he burst as well and the molten chunks of steel flew like comets, forcing the Gods to take cover. From that was coined a saying-“To leap out of Laeding and to dash out of Dromi,” when anything was especially difficult. At last they determined to call in the specialists-the Dwarves, who had made all the treasures of the Gods-every single one. Odin’s spear Gungnir, his arm ring Draupnir and Odroerir, the mead of inspiration; Frey’s ship Skithbladnir and his boar Gullinbursti; Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and Freya’s necklace Brisingamen. Skyrnir, Frey’s servant, it was who went to Svartalfheim to put the Gods’ request and when he returned he was carrying the rope Gleipnir. Now Gleipnir was not much to look at; in appearance it was only a slender, silken band. How could something so flimsy bind the Wolf when such mighty iron mongery as Laeding and Dromi had so miserably failed? Skyrnir told them what the Dwarves had told him. The rope was made from invisible and hidden things, things that are not found on Earth because the Dwarves have them in their keeping but they are things whose strength is beyond compare. And Skyrnir chanted the magick Runes that the Dwarves taught him; the six strands of which Gleipnir was woven: “Af Din Kattarin “Ok af Skeggi Konunar “Ok af Rotum Bjargsins “Ok af Sinum Bjarnarins “Ok af Anda Fisksins “Ok af Vogel’s Hraka.” [The Noise of a Running Cat The Beard of a Woman The Roots of Mountains The Sinews [or sensibilities] of a Bear The Breath of a Fish And Bird’s Spittle] They took the rope to the Wolf and challenged him to one final contest. “It may not look like much but it’s a bit stronger than it looks.” “You will break through it surely.” “And if you cannot break it it will show that you are no threat to the Gods and we will free you-you can trust us!” The Wolf replied, “That rope is so small it will be no contest-but if it is made with magick, I’m not having that put around my legs. And if I couldn’t break free it would be a long time before I’d get any help from you. Nevertheless, rather than be thought a coward by any of you I will let you bind me on the condition that one of you sets his right hand between my jaws as a gurantee you will let me go. I know you won’t object to my keeping you honest.” You should have seen the Gods all looking every which way except directly at the Wolf. Seeing how things were and how none of the Aesir or Vanir knew how to deal with this unforeseen circumstance Tyr stretched out his hand and set it firmly in Fenrir’s jaws. “Good-” mumbled the Wolf, speaking with his mouth full, “-you’re the only one of them I trust.” Then began the contest. The Wolf struggled and strained but no matter the force he exerted the narrow band grew tighter and tighter. Boiling in ever-growing rage and fury the Wolf stressed and strove; so powerful were his efforts that the force of gravity began to warp out of shape around him; darkness began to cover the Hvedrung’s son. And then the Wolf knew he was beaten. He looked at Tyr. The God of righteous war looked upon him unflinchingly. “Bite-” he said, “-for we have sworn a false oath to you.” The “Leavings of the Wolf” bore his pain in silence but all the Gods rejoiced. They took then a sword and set it to hold open Fenrir’s flashing jaws. In the end they buried him deep in the earth, fastening the rope Gleipnir in such a way that it might never become free from where they’d anchored it. And so the Wolf will remain until the Day of Ragnarök. But that Day will come and the Wolf will break free once he understands the mystery of Gleipnir’s making; once he understands that those six impossible things of which the rope is made, and which hold him prisoner, are Kennings. Kennings for mysteries, within mysteries, within mysteries; mysteries upon which the Power of the Gods is built. But when the Wolf solves these Mysteries-in that Day the Power of the Gods will be broken and the Wolf shall walk free. He will know the Gods to be no Gods at all; he will know himself to be held fast, only so long as he believes in them. In that Day shall the Ragnarök occur and the Powers that be in the Heavens shall be shaken [Matthew 24:29].

Fenrir was betrayed by the gods.😞 I'm glad he got in the top 3.
@forsell0608
@forsell0608 3 года назад
He didnt get betrayed. Fenrir was suspicius of the unbreakable bond since it was so small, and tyr had to give up hos hand to him, and then he realised he couldnt break free. They didnt really betray him
@Bluesit32
@Bluesit32 8 лет назад
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Tyr lose his hand while Fenrir was being bound? They persuaded Fenrir to allow then to tie a ribbon around its legs. The ribbon was made of cat footsteps, bear sinews, the call of a fish...or something like that. The point is that the reason they don't exist in the world is because they were used to make the ribbon. Fenrir agreed on the condition that someone place their hand into its mouth. Tyr stepped up and placed his right hand in the jaws of the wolf. The ribbon was tied and, much to Fenrir's dismay, it could not break it. In retaliation, it bit off Tyr's hand. Also, I believe Fenrir is destined to devour the sun during Ragnarok.
@destroyer11388
@destroyer11388 8 лет назад
Depends upon the version of the myth. One version fenrir had two kids. Haiti, and Skoll. Skoll is to eat the sun and haiti the moon. In another version fenrir eats both his mouth touches the sky and ground at the same time and he swallows odin whole.
@82SSchultz
@82SSchultz 8 лет назад
Yes, you are right. I was going to post just that, but I see you beat me to it! Tyr is my favorite Germanic god and just for that reason, that he knowingly sacrificed his hand to save the world while everyone else failed...Thor and Odin included.
@destroyer11388
@destroyer11388 8 лет назад
Well to tell the truth all the Norse Gods failed in their task, and accidentally set into motions the beginning of ragnorak.
@82SSchultz
@82SSchultz 8 лет назад
What I mean is at that point he saved the world and everyone else failed to step up to do so. Ragnarok, which was later, is a whole other matter. In that he kills and is killed by Garm, the hellhound.
@destroyer11388
@destroyer11388 8 лет назад
82SSchultz In all honesty if they didn't tie up Fenrir in the first place he wouldn't have an undying resentment for the norse gods. A couple of the things they did to try and prevent it only furthered it.

A better name for "Fossegrimen" is "The river man", in Sweden he's called "Näcken". It's a wording from the water flower "Nymphaeaceae" - since he was presumed to be by or in the water of rivers where that flower is growing in Sweden. Also, he does not teach you how to play the instrument, he lures young boys to the water to have them drowned.

It gets even weirder. Loki ate once a half-burned heart he found in a fire during his travels. It made him pregnant and eventually he gave birth to the first trolls.
@prestonestes1388
@prestonestes1388 8 лет назад
Loki was actually forced into it this time because the gods did not want to give the goddess Freya to a man who built the wall around Asgard as they promised. In order to stop him from completing the wall in the time he promised, Odin had Loki transform into a heated horse to lure away the man's horse. The horse did mate with Loki, impregnating him, and the man failed to complete the wall. This led to the man being executed by the gods for not fulfilling his promise. The wall is now incomplete and will allow the Jotuns a place to enter during Ragnarok. Also. Fenrir, Jormungandr, and Hel were born from Loki, as the father not mother, and a giantess. All children of Giants were malformed, and technically Loki is a tiny Jotun who was blooded into a Norse god by Odin, making him a Jotun with Aesir blood.

The only difference though is that Nidhogg will win. He is the last "great beast" as i like to call them that will end the world completly and prepare it for it's next life. Also, i can't accept you put the crawling snake over the winged snake.

Though the world won't end. Ragnarök is just twilight of the gods - man will still survive.

Shirou Tokisada Amakusa Kotomine But...it's Surtur that destroys the world by coating it in flames...not Niðhoggr

Jan Vovk He devours the leftovers after all deaths (Odin, Thor, Loki, Sutr, everybody else besides the humans...)

Shirou Tokisada Amakusa Kotomine I don't think this information is correct. Unless you provideca source I cannot agree with that statement. Niðhöggr gnaws at the tree of Yggdrasil and is seen during Ragnarok with corpses in its mouth. It is not stated anywhere that he devours the world. So, some evidence would be lovely to proove one of us wrong. I'm not saying I am correct by no means, I just haven't traced that information anywhere thus far.

I think it's funny when people try to talk about myths and then bring up movies.

Nolan Semprivivo not always a bad. Sometimes you learn about myth in video games or movie then get curious about the real myth.

I think it's funny that you don't understand that in the broader spectrum, myths and movies are the same. Have a Miller High Life and think about it.

3:03 you forgot to mention that the messages the squirle was giving to the dragon and the eagle, was trash talk it blamed one or the other for. This caused the dragon to start rating on the roots of the tree and the eagle to toss heavy winds down along its log. This is (acording to norse mytologi) the reason for many natural disasters. Sorry if i wrote something wrong, men jæ e en Nørman!
