Make an "Office in a Bag" like Flylady suggests - you will have what you need at your fingertips, whether you keep a planner in there, a tiny stapler and staple remover, envelopes and stamps, recent mail/bills, your tablet and charger, portable phone stand, pens, paper, passwords, important addresses, your Home Control Journal....

I've moved many times, but this is the first in a long time, and I'm setting up my own home. I've been watching moving tip videos. Done of your this were like others, but re-keying locks and transferring over all the utilities had not been mentioned yet. Thank you!

Great video 👍. I saw a great idea in another video - after putting a trash bag over hanging clothes, put a hair elastic around /over the top. Plus paper plates between real plates and coffee filters between bowls.

Great tips! I always make the bed first whenever I move. That is essential! You can also get free boxes at liquor stores, grocery stores, big box stores, etc. A tip I have is to create a 'Last to Pack' list for all of the things you use daily and won't be able to pack until the last day. That helped me stay organized and ensure I had the proper boxes and space!

I am in the midst of moving. I ran out of packing material! So, I found some old sox that we were going to recycle, and they worked beautifully to pack cups. I also bought a hundred paper plates for 99 cents and used them to put between my good dishes. Thank you for all your tips. Every idea will make it easier.

I got file boxes from Staples and packed all my books. They are sturdy and have handles cut out.

These are all great! I've moved several times and it's never an easy job... but, this is great! Also, liquor stores always have boxes and they are the perfect size for lifting no mater what you fill them with! ;)

OK, I've watched 3-4 of these moving hacks videos and you all say to get cardboard boxes from grocers, dumpsters, etc. Recently I've learned that grocery stores are no longer giving away cardboard boxes... they are breaking them down and putting them out for recycling. Also, even cardboard-only dumpsters can contain "unwanted guests." Unfortunately, bedbugs (!) are making a comeback, and grocery stores are a haven for cockroaches. Both of these nasty critters like to lay their eggs in cardboard, so don't use those boxes unless they were given to you by a relative or friend who can vouch for their lack of bugs. After you use them, recycle. You don't want to keep them for future use, for reasons aforementioned; i.e., nesting bugs.

Something to drink (already chilled, if possible) for yourselves and the movers - non-alcoholic and NOT generic. When we moved into our current house (34 years ago now), our refrigerator was set up right away, and we were just a block away from the supermarket, so we were able to buy soda pop and offer some chilled pop to the movers -- but it was store-brand cola, not Coke, so the movers were a bit disappointed.

Totally agree with rekeying your locks. I used to work on vacant homes for mortgage companies, and for ease of use most of them use the same 4-5 keys across the board. I once went to change a lock on an abandoned house and it looked familiar. The lock on the front door STILL had my sticker on the lock "REKEY THIS LOCK". I put in my keys until sure enough, one of them opened the door. Almost 7 years after changing it. So myself, and untold amounts of other less scrupulous people had the keys to this house all those years. I would literally buy hundreds of these locks all with the exact same key every month. PLEASE do yourself a favor and rekey or replace your locks. And don't buy the cheapest ones you can find, the price difference is usually minimal when taken into consideration long term vs your own security.

We just bought a house about a month ago, and I wish I would have had these tips then! Our move went pretty smoothly, but there was definitely room for improvement! Haha

I trash-bagged my clothes when I moved into my college dorm and my mom wanted to murder me while we were moving in haha. Everything was just sliding and falling all over the place as we were crossing the street, and the bags were ripping and it was just not a good time. The next year, I put my clothes in the trash bags BUT my dad made me put them inside these huge duffel bags after so they were contained. Long story short: don't do the trash bag method if you're moving into a dorm or any apartment in a city where you can't park your car right outside the building!

if you have glassware. . . if you have towles use them for the inside of you glasses and then you have towles for the first night.

Your workplace is a great place to get boxes. Be nice to the mailroom folks.
