For Reaper of the Cards, it's atk/def numbers are carefully chosen Japanese wordplay. When read in individual kun'yomi: 1 = hi, 3 = mitsu, 8 = ya and 0 = ma. And when read in individual on'yomi: 1 = i, 9 = ku, 3 = sa and 0 = re. When read as a sentence, it reads himitsu yama, ikusare which loosely reads as "you are going to the secret mountains" and is reference to the Shinigami who would lead people to the mountains and train tracks for them to die
Remember that in Duelist Kingdom, if a monster was summoned to a favorable field, it would gain a 30% increase in its stats, making these numbers even weirder
i no fear cuz i know his weak point to destroid the ring of levitation of his castle of darkness illusion and that colapse over his monster and then i win the duel! ha!
Sai Kisaragi Not true there is a lot of math that goes in to competitive both Smogon and VGC have a lot and to make things worse at VGC tourneys you can’t have the damage calculator so you have to memorize damage calls.
Its 2510 to make it just slightly better than Utopia, Utopia Ray and other 2500 monsters. Not strong enough to beat 2550 or above but just the tiniest bit better than 2500, so you can pull out those rediculous 10LP comebacks or some nonsense
Too bad attack points means almost nothing now without an insane ability to back it up. If the monster doesn't lead to spammable summons, negation or nullifying your opponents options its not good sadly.
That's because dealing with the opponent has always been a more effective way at winning rather than focusing on yourself. It's not just a Yu-Gi-Oh! thing and the card designers realize this. That doesn't excuse the occasionally awful design, but that's just how games are.
I like that they gave Panik’s monsters weird stats for the purpose of evening out the field power bonus, but in the process just made it even more confusing. XD
I say they should support these strange attack values. Maybe make a deck after it. Like: "When your opponent's life points doesn't end with a 0, you get to draw 2 cards." Or: "Target one monster you control with ATK that doesn't end in a 0. This turn, that monster can attack three times."
It was Yu-Gi-Oh that taught me to say "sixteen hundred", "twenty-two hundred", "thirty-three hundred", etc. Instead of "one thousand six hundred" on almost everything.
For me it depends on the context, sometimes I'll say sixteen hundred, other times it will be one thousand six hundred. Other times it just doesn't matter I just say one or the other
You say that like there wasn't a good few 4 star 2000 defence monsters about. Terribly common ones, at that rate (looking at you giant soldier of stone).
The anime-only sub version _Seven-Armed Fiend_ (episode 13 of the original show) wins out for having 666 ATK and 666 DEF. The dub changed those values to 1000 because, you know, 666. It also appeared in the Capsule Monsters anime, where it gained all sorts of abilities and was used by Alexander the Great. Because he played Yu-Gi-Oh as well. Did you know he was taught how to play children's card games by none other than Aristotle? Guy was one of the greats of his time.
beriorn I wouldn't joke about capsule monsters, it was a great part of the show. yea and also the first time we saw seven armed fiend bakuras father was given it by this mysterious evil guy like you said episode 13.
In the manga "The wicked avatar" monster had an ability to make its attack equal tot he highest on the field +1 instead of the +100 it has in the real card game
I had a feeling you were going to put EartboundImmortal Condor on this list. I use the name of their Nazca Symbols in normal conversation; Saying "Giant," "Condor," "Lizard" etc. is easier than saying their full names, sometimes. If it helps, here is how you pronounce Condor's full name: Weiro (Weirdo without the D) Ka Ka Raska. WiroqachaRasca = Weiro Ka Ka Raska. Hope this helped.
Castle of Dark Illusions' 1930 defence actually makes the card very useful because that way it gets higher def stats than the atk of most level 4 or below monsters.
They even say it in duel links now, and have for a little while if you use Goodwin. I'm more worried about butchering Ccpac Apu even after hearing it multiple times Inb4 I spelled that wrong
Sora Shiun'in I was gave 3 cards as my first,D.human, mysterious puppeteer and kagemusha of the blue flame, then bought yugi started back in 2002. Traded my old fake paper cards I'd had since the show first aired for real cards.
"Activated the monster effect! When this monster attack, your life point will be decreased by 2/36 multiplied point of normal attack!" Me:... I resign this duel.
What about Bones vs. Joey? All of Bones' monsters had weird stats to begin with, then between the field power bonus and Pumpking, the numbers went quite oddly.
Fun Fact: Utopia Prime is actually an adaptation of the manga card Utopia One, named so because it's effect left you with 1 life point and it's attack was 2501.
mew the mew without math, you wouldn’t even have most of the things you take for granted like TV, video games, etc. Besides, it’s just addition and subtraction, for which you could easily use a calculator.
They called him "PaniK" because he has a P and a K on his jacket and they didn't want to use the word killer because this is Yugioh dub censorship garbage.
You should have mentioned Yugi's Reduction Barrier Trap Card he played in his rematch with Rafeal, how when played it reduces all damage the user takes to just (i think) 10%, which after taking an attack, left Yami Yugi with 10 LP, also resulting in him winning with only 10 LP. But it did not stop there... in his duel with Dartz, he played the Relay Soul Trap Card, which can only be played when your LP hit 0. When your LP hit 0, you can play this Trap to summon a Monster (i think from your hand only) to act as your last Life Point's/Last chance effort to stay in the game, and you can keep dueling as long as that monster stays on the field, but if that monster played by Relay Soul gets destroyed in any fashion, then you lose the duel! And of course, Yami Yugi was able to win this duel with 0 LP's technically! lol
relay soul says you take no damage while the summoned monster is on the field, so yami didn't have 0 life point. The only card that let you win with 0 lp is infernity zero
The Champ yes there is,actually. 3 riryokou, and any monster card with the last two digits ending with 10. Btw whoever is telling you that you can’t get decimals in yugioh is probably some casual.
There was something magical about the duels in season 1, they really felt they could go either way at any time and it all felt really risky, hell, i didn't even realize some stuff until years later, like the the Field power bonus gave your monsters a 30% boost. Sure, I get WHY they had to streamline it later, because what they did in season 1 really, REALLY wouldn't really translate into a cardgame, but... I dunno, Season 1 man.
Season 1/Duelist Kingdom Manga is a solid piece of art, man. 1. Jonouchi's start of his journey and back then, the olmanga actually respect him and everyone that diss him (except Kaiba) got their ass beat. 2. Pegasus being an elegant, yet scary villain who introduce himself by reading Yami's mind through VSH. 3. Yami fucking hanged a guy. (Dark Killier/Panik) in manga. Or Yami defend himself from fire in anime. 4. Mai, a very strongest antagonist, but she also has the amirable side to her. Really drives Yami in the corner because trap/spell combo rather than brute force like Blue eyes. She is also the reason the gang did not starved. 5. Kaiba returns out of sheer will to save Mokuba and duel Yugi and his revival destroyed a Blue eyes. Cementing his status as its true master. 6. Manga Yami hanging around with his friends when he is not dueling and is kind of worry of what are they going to eat. 7. Yugi lamenting he may or may not want potato chip more than star chip at that desperate moment. 8. It has the energy of "camping with friends, but nobody knows wtf are they doing." on top of the rescue mission trying to get Grandpa back. 9. Jonouchi breaks Bandit Keith's ass then beat his ass in duel.
Just want to point out that if EVERY card dealt with atk/def and life points in increments of 100, you might as well divide everything by 100 and just use double-digit values instead. The fact that life, atk, and def are measured in 100s and 1000s suggests that the designers wanted to be able to have increments of 10s and 1s as well. Or the manga writer had no idea how to make an actual card game and just wrote a bunch of stuff that sounded cool.
I used to run a deck full of monsters like these as well as spells and traps that reduced monster stats and damage by half. It wasn’t a strong deck, but it elicited funny reactions from people at Locals.
Slightly off-topic, maybe, but am I the only one miffed that the real-world Winged Dragon of Ra didn't get its ATK from the combined ATK of the monsters sacrificed to summon it like in the anime?
Or one of the Ra support cards give him that effect.

Hilariously, Castle of Dark Illusions is super good in the Yu-Gi-Oh game Dark Duel Stories we got in the States. It was great to watch Kaiba ram a Blue Eyes into it, only for that Blue Eyes die instantly.
I almost thought that the Castle of Dark Illusions having ATK 920 and DEF 1930 might be because it represented a castle that was built in the year 920 and then it suffered an incident in 1930, but now knowing that the card in the manga had different ATK and DEF values made me realise that my theory didn't make sense.
If I recall correctly Reaper of Cards has weird stats because it’s attack and defense are supposed to point to the dates of some important events in history.
I made some support for this type of deck. I call it quick math support. Mathematician's Lab (Field Spell): All Monsters gain 1111 Atk while their controller's opponent's life points end in something other than 00. Weighted Scale (Trap): Deal up to 1000 damage to your opponent and gain LP equal to 2000 minus the damage dealt to your opponent with this card. x =/= 0 (Continous Trap): Ignore any damage that would take you to 0 LP unless it would take you to exactly 0 LP. Rising Interest (Continous Spell): At the start of your Draw Phase if your lifepoints end in something other than 00 add 1 Value Counter to this card, then draw a number of cards equal to the number of value counters on this card. Caning Cane (Equip Spell): Can only be equipped to a monster with an attack value that ends in something other than 50 or 00. The equipped monster can attack three times each battle phase. Divide by Zero (Counter Trap): Activate only as an even chain link number to a card or an effect activation. Negate all effects in the current chain.
I would like to say you are a wonderful person for the way you pronounce certain words the good way. Also was always curious about the difference with certain cards in the anime vs real life
Panic Monsters - any monster thats attack or defense doesn't end 00. Lets make it a thing people. Example: 1930 attack = panic monster, 1910 defense = panic monster. 1900 attack dos not equal a panic monster
08_hotline 2 I know right, it's as of it feels super strong from it's gains, as if it was worth the effort. It's basically saying, "Hey! Check out my measly 200 bonus. I can turn duels around with this! Also the digits end with an odd number still!" It's like playing Fire Emblem and having a unit with 10% growth rates on literally every stat. And the character finally gets 3 stat increases total and make comments like, "I feel stronger!" Or "Is this my strength?" Makes me want to die from cancer.
Honorable mention I see doesn’t get enough attention is Thousand eyes idol with 0 atk/def and no affects. I’m aware its a fusion material for thousand eyes restrict but to be a statless normal card without that knowledge I feel is worth the mention
I think the real king of games is Kaiba. He is a really solid character, he is practically a walking billboard for the Blue Ryes White Dragon, he own a billion dollar gaming company, he opened a duel monsters themed amusement park, he’s hosted 2 duel monsters tournaments, he has a really solid Win loss ratio, having only lost to Yugi and Pegasus, (and drawn with Alister that one time, and he would have defeated Noah!!!! But he chose his brother instead, I’m not counting that as a lost - that whole arc was pure filler anyway). He also created the duel disk systems and the VR systems so people could get more out of the game, AND he helped to create the first Ener-D system! Kaiba has done more for the game than any other Character ever has. Kaiba is the real King of games.
You can use utopia prime’s effect to trigger the condition for cards like “End of The Line” that requires you to have very low LP to activate their full effects. Having 100 LP or 10 LP does make the big difference in this situation.
I still got castle dark illusion from my childhood, it was considered a good defensive monster back then, none of us have smartphone or cellphone, often pissing off myfriend when they happen to get damaged by it lol
I'd love retrains of Castle of Dark Illusions & co. "Barox, Beast of dark illusions," "Metal Guardian, Protector of Dark Illusions," "Chimera, Fiend of Dark Illusions". Stuff like that. With the boss perhaps a big Xyz "Citadel of Dark Illusions"
Top 10 Anime Exclusive Cards you wish were Real? (Edit: Though I was wondering, should it be a Three-Way List of the Top 10 Anime Exclusive Monster Cards you wish were Real, the Top 10 Anime Exclusive Spell Cards you wish were Real, and the Top 10 Anime Exclusive Trap Cards you wish were Real? Or should it be just one list?)
does anyone remember those good old days where we didn't summon 7+ monsters in the same turn and the monsters were more likely to die by a battle instead of an effect? if this game was owned by ea we would barely notice any difference.it would still be pay-to-win and full of unbalanced cards just like it is now.
And where decks could be mildly themed without some sad sack telling you every card you picked was shit, while calling PoG the most OP thing since the Atom Bomb. Where people could play for fun and not just stupid crunch... ugh.
If you played more than 1 metas, you'd actually know that what you're describing is an "unga bunga" deck or caveman yugioh. There were a LOT of metas in Yugioh that required a ton of skill and reading and early yugioh where you summon a vanilla beater and pass was not one of them lol. And there were very few metas (if at all) where monsters were more likely to die by battle than an effect. Some decks would rely on running over opponents, but very rarely was there a meta where every deck was about running over shit through battle. If you also say you played Yugioh for like a year when the show was running, then you don't get to say "does anyone remember"
Should've added thousand-eyes idol. Its a 0/0 with no effect. OR Chainsaw bug 2400/0 lvl 4 monster. thats pretty cool. remember the first time i saw that card back in the day
I was playing Yugioh Duel Generations on the iPad at one point years after years away from the game and dueled some opponent, I don't remember who, I think she was a girl from 5D's, who had a deck full of cards that slashed every monsters' attack power in half. After a very arduous duel whose details I can't entirely remember, I think I finally won with a monster sitting at like 712 attack power or something after continuous slashes to its attack power.
i remember when i had a yugioh game for the gameboy advanced... it went after the rules of the second season (somewhat) and it also still had the field power bonus... also monsters were unable to kill certain types of other monsters...
the worst part about these weird number cards is that the official yugioh duel disk only worked in 50's at the lowest so there was just no way to calculate these on that
if u summon 3 of these monsters you need to give math equations to your opponent that he needs to calculate them in 1 minute if he fails or does mistakes he losses duel *hidden effect*
4:19 Seeing how you included a few anime-exclusive cards, or at the very least monsters with their anime effects, there is one monster that could easily replace Metal Guardian. And that is the Seven-Armed Fiend. In the Dub, the Seven-Armed Fiend is nothing special. It's a Level 1, Dark Fiend-Type monster with 1000 ATK and DEF. However, if you watched the Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh, the original text if the monster had it's ATK and DEF be 666. The number of the Devil. (Thinking about that, I'm surprised that PaniK didn't have the Seven-Armed Fiend as one of his monsters.)
There's a fusion monster that gains 10000 atk only on your turn. It's called Armityle the Chaos phantom, and is made by banishing Uria lord of searing flames, Hamn lord of striking thunder, and Raviel, lord of phantasms from your field.
These random 10s and 20s are pretty much only there to ensure they are dominant to other monsters of the same attack but not legitimately more effective in dealing damage
Ah, the pain of using an 1800 attack monster and smacking castle of dark illusions and needing to remove 170 LP which will then haunt you for the rest of the duel.
Only Duelist Kingdom itself, Marik's Winged Dragon of Ra effect and Panik have weird stats in terms of LP. Stats normally have the last two digits of 00 and 50.
This makes me want to go on a hour trip on the train to get my GBA SP to play stairway to the destined duel now. I think I'll be asking my mother to bring it to my university purely with the yugioh game. But god these numbers are weird to do mental maths with. I'd just round up to be on the safe side when attacking.
I wish the earthbound immortal bird kept a burn effect, his anime effect and irl effect have nothing in common. Also, honorable pention to Dinomorphia Rextrem which makes all ATKs wonky.
For the Earthbound Immortal, Goodwin pronounces is as “Wih-rah-cow-cha Raas-ca” so Im gonna say thats the correct way to say it. Not trying to correct you, I completely understand not knowing how to pronounce it 😂 Great video btw
back when I used to play I made a wall deck. it would hardly win, but anyone who lost to this deck felt really stupid. Anyway castle of dark illusion would be one of the cards I would run in it, and people hated keeping track of the math. lol... when you spend your time around highly competitive people sometimes winning is no longer your goal, but making them beat you in the most painful way possible is.
For Utopia Prime, MOST players just use him as an extra xyz material or in the anime overlay unit for one of the final forms of the og Utopia, Utopia the Lightning and its staggering boost when it attacks. I guess that is why Konami made Prime's attack points 2510. (The reason why I said MOST is that there are some people, like panik, that are just plane evil and make our brains hurt even more by doing "weird" math.)
You forgot to add that upon paying the LP and material cost that Utopia Prime destroys all special summoned monsters the opponent controls and deals 300 damage for each one destroyed this way. Oh also the destroyed monsters are banished so it's really upon successfully banishing them that it deals 300 damage for each one but ya know, tomato tamato.
