heart of the velothi guy here - west gash halted production around late 2020-early 2021 after my computer shit its guts out. i didn't structure our team too well to account for my absence, and i'm also regrettably a bit of a micromanager, so i put the project in limbo for a year as i went through a rigorous re-organizing and re-imagining of what the mod would be. i returned december 2021 and got to work on a heightmap overhaul with the help of wolli & greatness7, where it sees active & swift development today despite me being the only guy working on it at the moment. you can play an in-dev version on our server (links available on the tamriel rebuilt & project tamriel servers). when this is finished, heart of the velothi will pick back up development building off of this heightmap overhaul with a much clearer design initiative and learn from a lot of its past mistakes. if you want to play the mod today, i recommend playing randompal's version (packaged in his beautiful cities of morrowind mod) which not only includes bugfixes & tweaks but also some better integration of T_D content. thanks for covering my mod a third time, and i'm super stoked to be featured among so many household names in the community as well as talented new modders!

"A pattern of continued growth that's been going on for the past seven years in the Morrowind modding community". I wonder if something started around that time which has constantly drawn attention to Morrowind modding and encouraged the creation of new mods. Some sort of video series maybe. I'm not exactly sure.

Glad to see my mod on a top ten list. Especially since it was my first mod and initially meant as a personal merger and patch for different Sheogorad mods. But then things snowballed out of control and then it became a major landscape overhaul :D

2020 was an amazing year for Morrowind modding, and the community has only grown stronger since then. Morrowind may be 20 years old, but I thinks its best years are still to come!

Ashfall- Love your mod. Assume its a team, because the size and all, really love playing with it. I was indecisive in getting it at first, because I thought it was going to be half-assed, but I really love it so far. Are there any mods you know of that expand on the mechanics, like adding in more of the craftables or whatnot? tldr; I need more, more more!

It makes perfect sense that the quality of mods would improve from the early days even if the modders are equally ambitious and skilled. We simply know more now, and that gives us a better starting point. All these mods are clearly very interesting and worthwhile, and I very much appreciate what you're doing here, DEG. But I can't just leave it there; I like to think about these things deeper, and provide my further thoughts. What follows is some musings on specific mods, your commentary on them, what I think makes them work well, and where I think your commentary might actually be a little misguided as to the strengths of the mods in question. I would say that Skyrim's dungeons are no better than Morrowind's, but for different reasons. The Ancestral Tombs have very little to make them worth exploring (though that does in fact fit in with the lore around them well enough if you ask me), but they're short and sweet, while Skyrim's are often more scenic, but outstay their welcome, and the existence of something novel and interesting is no more common than in Morrowind's. Particularly in terms of loot -- unique loot in Skyrim is much rarer than in Morrowind, so your reward for doing generic overlong dungeon number 361 is some generic stuff that may not even be worth the carry weight to cart out of there. Combine that with Skyrim's quests railroading you into generic dungeons constantly, and dungeon delving in Skyrim can be a miserable experience in tedium. Not to say that upgrading dungeons isn't a good goal, but Skyrim's aren't some incredible thing either. I love Remiros's dungeon upgrades, for the most part, but that's because they play off of and build on Morrowind's existing strengths, not because they emulate a different game which is merely bad in different ways. I will also say, what makes magic worthwhile isn't its flashiness. I appreciate flashiness well enough myself, but things like the ball of light following you, rather than you emitting light, or long, drawn out animations for picking things up with telekinesis, are not what I'd call obvious improvements. They're pretty, yes, but the speedy functionality of the original versions have, in my view, distinct advantages in terms of gameplay. The detection and miscast changes, on the other hand, are great. They improve actual functionality in a clear way, and deepen immersion in the process, without slowing down gameplay or simply being flashy for the sake of flashiness -- their flashiness has a purpose beyond itself. Maybe this is just that I always play mages in any game that lets me, so the value of "ooh, shiny" wore off a long time ago for me, but Morrowind's magic was always appealing to me for its versatility and variety of uses. Its flashiness or lack thereof is tertiary at best, and when flashiness gets in the way of the spells doing what I want quickly and easily, the lack of flashiness of the vanilla versions is a feature, not a bug to be fixed. Ashfall is a good mod, but honestly, in my view, the best thing about needs mods like Necessities of Morrowind is adding the food shops and cooking recipes that flesh out the world. NOM is very limited, yes, but it does some things that Ashfall just doesn't, and those things are most of the reason I'd want a needs mod in the first place. Those, and an early-game money sink that slows down how fast your character snowballs into being unreasonably wealthy, which NOM once again does more effectively than Ashfall. Ashfall is by no means a straight upgrade on NOM, and for me in particular it will never replace NOM, though it _is_ a very impressive mod in its own right. They're two different mods with very different priorities on what makes a needs mod worth having, and while some of that from the NOM side of things may have been related to the limitations of MWScript, I think they have value even as those limitations are removed. Ashfall certainly deserves its place here, regardless, mind. This is just, once again, me musing on the nature of needs mods driven by how your commentary went. Also, for the record, for a skilled programmer, building a second crafting system would be incomparably easier than the first, because you already have all the background generic work done, and primarily need to adjust the front-end to the new variation. Not a knock against Merlord at all, mind -- if anything, it would indicate that he's a very skilled programmer even more than if he had needed to do an enormous amount of work both times. It's just a misconception about the nature of the work that is all too common due to the absurd, and somehow positive, weight capitalist culture puts on exhausting yourself working. To be able to do something like this increasingly easily indicates skill. If it's similarly hard every time, you're probably just brute-forcing it repeatedly. I think Merlord is skilled enough to not need to brute force the implementation of working code repeatedly. I think he understands how it all works quite well, and thus that the second implementation would have been much more straightforward for him than the first. And that skill is what makes him an invaluable member of the modding community.

I combined Operator Jack's mods with my existing setup which includes a mod that makes character powers constant effect instead of cast once a day. Made a character with Tower birthsign. Can see everything always! A super thief! Based her on a custom court assassin class I made years ago in Oblivion. It's wonderful so far. Edit, turns out I've been using nearly all of these except Starwind. Ashfall is great.. Strongly recommended. My roommate will love Starwind though, thanks dude!

my guy my dude, i love your videos please keep making them, i know that we every opinion is good and all but "skyrim's dungeons were far better cause they had more loot to them and things to do" is not a good opinion, ancestral tombs were not supposed to be dungeons with sick magic sword of awesomeness for pro gamers they were design to be worldbuilding atmospheric landmarks that you can explore if you want.

The reason why i like Morrowind dungeons is precisely the reason why i hate skyrim's. That is, because most of them are short and sweet and don't overstay their welcome with 100 enemies to kill and 100 containers to go through. The precise reason why i straight up stop playing Skyrim is because i was tired of the game sending me to long and boring dungeons every single quest. More is not always better.

The idea that every hole in the ground needs to be special is stupid. I feel like it adds to the feel of a real world when not every tomb/cave is massive.
@MorrowindModdingShowcases
@MorrowindModdingShowcases 2 года назад
As a dungeon designer, when I say Skyrim has better dungeon design, I'm referring to environmental design, atmosphere, story design, interactivity, and yes, to a degree, scale. While Morrowind unquestionably has better loot placement and leveled enemies (using limited leveled lists, as opposed to the later games), it clearly falls flat in a lot of other areas. Some of Morrowind's dungeons are really good (see: Arkngthand), and some of Skyrim's dungeons are really bad, but on the average, a lot of Morrowind's dungeons simply have no reason to exist, lack detail, will literally only take you 3-5 minutes to run through, and more than a few suffer from instances of copy&paste-itis. That might be more realistic, but that's not great from a gameplay perspective. Skyrim does go overboard with making dungeons, on the average, too long, and (strangely) too convenient, but I'd argue the ideal then is a middle-ground between Morrowind and Skyrim, and most of the good dungeon mods being made for Morrowind today do exactly that, taking elements of Skyrim (environmental design, atmosphere, environmental story-telling) and combining them with what Morrowind already does well.
@vennin7781
@vennin7781 2 года назад
@@MorrowindModdingShowcases haha that strangely convenient remark got me. But I can see what you mean about the dungeons feeling copy/paste in morrowind. I wasn't saying that I enjoyed all of them the way they are now, I just feel like when you finally find that awesome massive cave/dungeon it feels better. I personally think the work being done with dungeon mods now is awesome.
