This Apple Event was one for the ages. We thought the new chip would be the MacBook pro M1X or M2 and now we have 2 new chips. The M1 Pro & M1 Max. I went with the Macbook 14 M1 Max and I think I am in love LOL. The power on this thing is crazy, let me know if you guys picked one up yourself! Ive been hearing so many issues about the 14 inch MacBook pro having battery life problems or extremely loud fan noise. Today I debunk that.

I had the same exact thinking. Once you get to your destination, the 16in would be much better for usability and ergonomics. Those are important factors for productivity to me. Also the bigger screen, better battery, better thermals, and better speakers are a plus.

Like you, I got both, and like you, on the whole I prefer the 16”. I do like the 14” for couch surfing to edit websites or to take down to a cafe for casual use, but when I get back to the 16” it’s a relief and a nicer experience. If you had a big monitor to plug into at each location you work regularly it might be different. I’m still glad I have a 14” too though - looking forward to taking it with me on holiday hopefully in a few weeks without any heavy editing work for example.

Thanks for the video comparison! Been seeing way too much of "The M1 Pro is more than enough!" so it's nice to see more content on maxed out M1 Max machines. I personally went with the 16" myself just because I'm not sure how much I'll be able to use an external monitor, and because I wanted the essentially unlimited power.

I have the 14", the way I see it while at a hotel you can use the HDMI from the tv to extend the display in use cases where more display space is needed away from home. At home I rarely use the built in display unless away from my desk. The smaller form factor is great more often than it is an inconvenience in my use case.

Great comparison! I think the 16” is the way to go. I came from a 15” and the 16” has the same footprint, but larger screen. To me the $200 extra is definitely worth it for the larger screen, better battery life and improved thermal performance. The screens are so nice on these new laptops, I haven’t used my 16” much with my external monitors. Maybe if I had 4K monitors I would be more tempted, but connecting these to anything less thank 4K would be a downgrade in my opinion. I actually ordered a 15.6” 4K monitor to use as a second display occasionally.

the video quality of the MacBook Pro 16 inch screen is 1080p. I use 2 externals though and you are right....the colors are out of this world and very tough to replicate on a 1080 monitor . I thought it was higher than 1080p also because its just beautiful but they said there was no point in making it 4k because of the screen size.

Nice reviews Johnny. I am more concern about the performance when editing the vídeo projects (the playback). Did you notice some differences when you start adding color grade, effects, multiple camera files, etc, or do they perform the same at this point? What about the fans, do they run more frequently in one than the other(when editing)?

Thanks a lot....great things to consider with 16" vs 14". I'll be upgrading from a 2013 Macbook Pro 15. I don't have to travel with it so I'm leaning towards the 16". Debating on going with a refurbished M1 Macbook Pro vs a new M2 Macbook Pro? I can save about $420 going with the M1. Not too concerned about the extra cost if the M2 is worth it. I plan to get into some video editing, but probably nothing very complicated. Any thoughts?

In the past I always got the largest screen laptop possible. But, the 13” m1 showed another way. It is so light I find myself holding in my hand closer to my face than I used to do with laptops (I am sure the use of iPads has also gotten me used to that). So the smaller screen closer to my face is a way to be more mobile. In airline use for sure.

I did the same and stuck with the 16”. I have 2 external ultrawide monitors attached and when I traveled the 14” screen was just too small for me. The extra weight was not an issue. Can’t open the computer on a flight in a coach class seat BUT I have a 12.9” iPad for that. Battery life differences were significant from my experience. 16” is an all day machine for my workload.

There's also 3rd way to use a laptop....on lap. I like to work part of the day outside (indoor-outdoor -living) while being in my other home in sunny Spain. I had the opportunity to check both sizes in store and first impression from 16" model was, that I will regret later if I select it. I love everything extra it gives, but I wouldn't want to work 2 hours it being on my lap. I'm leaning towards 14". When working on desk, I will be using additional monitor anyway.

After weeks of debate (with myself) and literally 10 times ordering and cancelling orders on the apple website I finally settled on the 16 inch over the 14. Mine should be delivered next week hopefully. My reasoning was that I already have, and am planning to keep, the M1 MB Air (absolutely love my M1 MBA!). If I need portability I will use the Air but I want my new MB Pro to be with the big screen. I had a chance a couple times to play with both 14 and 16 at Best Buy and for me the larger size and weight didn’t make much difference but the bigger screen size did make a difference. Not to mention the better battery life and slightly better performance of the 16.

If you’re keeping the air 1000% right decision. Congrats on the new machine!

@CAM Tech On October 18th, I had ordered a fully maxed out 16" M1 Max with 64 GB RAM and 8 TB SSD. However, I returned it during the first week in November after watching many reviews on these machines and I knew that 8TB SSD was overkill for me. Then I ordered a 16" M1 Max with 64 GB RAM and a 4 TB SSD but canceled it because I wanted to do more research to better understand my needs and expectations. Thus, I have been to the Apple Store several times focusing on the weight and screen size. The weight really didn't matter all that much because I have been traveling and doing all the things with my current Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro for almost 8 years. Next, I would like to do a fair amount of multitasking as well as split-screen development with tools like Xcode (i.e. code and SwiftUI preview) and VSCode (i.e. implementation and test code). Finally, I'll be reordering 16" M1 Max with 64 GB RAM and a 4 TB SSD today.

@@conradtaylor29 sounds great, sounds like your getting same specs as me - edit - yours is the 64gb unified memory, mine is 32. I have just a very small bit of regret that I didn’t get the 64gb UM but 32 will just fine for me. It may just use more swap memory at times. Plus, this thing is already at just over $4800 and I had to draw the line somewhere! I just got email notification from Apple this morning that mine will be delivered next Wednesday!

"If I need portability". Well, if you most don't need portability, what's the point to get another LAPtop?? If you already have the air for 'when you need portability', makes a lot more sense get a desktop.

So interesting. I’m super intrigued by this….Your export experience couldn’t be more different than mine. I’m releasing a video on my use as an architect and content creator. In both use cases, the 16” was way quieter than the 14”. During renders, the 16” hovered at 2400rpm on and off, while the 14” hovered at 4500 continuously and would ramp up to 5800-6000rpm. In my PP export, the fans of the 14” kicked in starting 1 minute 30 and didn’t stop till export ended. I was on Automatic. I wonder if it’s a QC issue. 🤔 Edit: M1 Max, 32 core gpu, 32 gb RAM.

Also, I want to be able to do the tasks that pay me well especially when traveling 😅😂. The weight is nothing since I’m used to 15/16” form factors at this point.

You tested M1 Max 14" but does the M1 Pro also have low power mode? I'm kind of disappointed with the 14" MBP's battery which is rated at 11 hours of wireless web browsing. Even 4-5 years ago Apple rated the 13" machines at 12 hours browsing and that too with intel chips. So this happy with M1 13" MBP (or even M1 Air) user might have to get the 16" because of mini led and battery life. My most used app is probably the browser (Netflix, RU-vid, class lectures, web browsing) My ideal machine was 2011 13" MBA - it didn't lack anything compared to its bigger cousins except for ethernet port and DVD Drive (never needed for my use case)

Great video, nice job. 1. the portability talk is really narcism, both are easily portable. If you fly all the time, are a student with small desk in the classroom, or work at a coffee shop on a small table then the smaller footprint wins out on the 14, this is not the same concept as portability. 2. Even if you use external monitors, having the 16 has many benefits over the 14. 3. People should get what makes them happy, but the only logical reason for the 14 is for working in tight quarters, there are no other valid reasons (that are not offset by the 16) on having a 14 over the 16 so no reason to try to defend these reasons, people should simply say i like the 14 better, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, nothing wrong with this at all.

For serious pro work, 16" is a no brainer. It goes through the tasks like a workhorse, 14" is kind of a gimmick compared to 16". It works ok until it get's warm then all system fails. As a professional photographer I have opportunity if not a requirement to have both. 14" is a basic (M1,16gb ram) model, 16" is maxed up (m1max,64gb ram,gpu32c)... I got 16" 3 months after 14", and for sure I did a real life comparison. As photographer I use medium format camera, as well as full frame, so all files are huge. I use Lightroom, Capture one and Photoshop software, many times interlinked... To be brief, all the tools that serious pro uses, and I do hdrs, panoramas etc.. So there's no room to hide for the hardware. So after 4 months onward, this are my findings: 14" (16gb ram, basic graphic, 1tb) ok for a very basic tasks, it's great actually if you keep it simple and not load up very demanding projects. If you keep the quantity low, few 10 files for edit, export, retouch, etc... it shines out any intel based laptops immediately. It doesn't lag, all is smooth and it is on pair with maxed out 16". I love the size, bam you throw it in the photobag and you're off. Love it! BUT: as soon as bigger project come, with hundreds, thousands of shots, among which there are panoramas, hdrs, 1:1 previews etc..lots of 100% views of 100mp files, things fall back immensely. I say immensely to be compared to Intel laptops, if not even worse. With heavy load, Lightroom starts to lag so much, that at times it is impossible to work, every click on a brush takes few seconds of a "wheel time", which makes you wanna throw the laptop at the wall :). Don't but it is hideous. Therefore, for a quick jobs in-out, great. For a serious workstation, nope nope and nope. Gimmick! 16" (64gb ram, 32c gpu, 2tb) throw at it whatever you want, it goes through like a knife thru butter. I think that's not just the maxed out spec, but just the size. Cramping all the spec into 14" has to come with some tradeoffs. I can't even imagine what would happen if I'd get maxed out 14". It would fry, I guess. LR export: 46 edited files at 100mp to resized JPG= 14" needed 31 seconds more 187 edited files at 100mp to resized JPG= 16" (7:22min) / 14" (15.24min) ...14" slowed down after 4 minutes drastically. Which might be due to the heat that kicked in and slowed down everything. ...now imagine you are working on something else while exporting on 14". Of course on other occasions I did, and it only slows down the export even more. Don't even think of using other heavy duty software when process power slows down, you are in for a chain reaction when all just becomes a dream where you try to run but you can't. So if you are in for a serious work, needing a workstation; 16" is the only way, don't be mislead by reviewers who in most cases are not professionals in video/photo world.
