Certain Toyota AWD models suffer from differential bearing noise. Mike Riley explores these issues in this episode, covering diagnostics.
-
Toyota uses a rather unique rear differential design which involves not only a viscous coupling but also an electromagnetic coupler. Model variations determine the basic design of the viscous coupling unit. Vehicle applications such as the RAV 4 use a design in which the electromagnetic coupler is attached to the differential, separate from the viscous coupling.
A Siena van for instance, has the electromagnetic coupler contained within the viscous coupling assembly although ultimately both designs operate in the same way.
Due to the fact, that the large bearing which supports the viscous coupling is somewhat exposed to the elements the bearing can fail over time. The upgrade provided by Toyota in effect adds a large seal to the assembly to avoid this problem. A TSB (T-SB-0080-13R1) was issued by Toyota addressing this failure along with product and repair information.
Note: Always refer to OE product and technical information

Fantastic, knowledgeable video. Quick question..I have a 2019 Toyota 4runner Limited AWD with the torson center locking differential. The vehicle only has fifteen thousand miles on it. While driving slowly in packed snow the other day, I turned the selector knob to 4 HI, which locks the center diff. Immediately I heard a VERY CONCERNING and HEAVY and LOUD grinding noise with vibration (not the light buzz that owners say is normal). It sounded like gears slippng past one another. I Immediately stopped the vehicle as the 4WD indicator light flashed signaling a failure to engage. I tried several times to engage 4WD with the vehicle stopped and in neutral without success. I then put the vehicle in the default AWD mode and returned home without incident. Several days later, I tried engaging the center locking diff again and it worked perfectly. I also took the vehicle to the dealership and everything checked out fine...🤔 I've got one year of warranty left but am still very concerned. I love the vehicle but am worried about the episode. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. What do you think? I can't find anything on the web. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for posting and very timely for me. I have just noticed a growling coming from the rear of my 2015 AWD Sienna. Is there a TSB for the Sienna Viscous Coupler?

This happens all the time when these Awd vehicles get towed in and not brought in on a flat bed. if you get your awd drive sienne towed with just 2 wheels up in the air and the other rolling on the ground expect that growling sound it could happen to new vehicles too great video👍📹😮

Also when was this bulletin issued? There was one that was released in 2013 with the same number but no R1 on the end? Do you have a link with the information for this SB?

My 2013 Sienna has been unusually loud for the past little bit and the noise seems to be coming from the rear differential area. Would it be possible to replace the bearings without purchasing a whole new unit? It seems like the aftermarket replacement bearings don’t have the o-ring attached, since the design of the coupler has been revised and is now sealed. Would the dust deflectors and covers from the revised coupler fit in the original? Thank you immensely.

I took apart our 2009 AWD VENZA . Big bearing is good. Going to replace it anyway because it comes with the bearing kit I purchased. But the inside smaller bearing is bad. Is this normal or something else maybe causing this issue?

Thanks for the video. I have a 2017 sienna awd. Started hearing a noise that was similar to brake pads dragging during slow speeds. Noise was loudet when turing either left or right. Took it to toyota dealshership and the techs thought that the front brake calipers were warped... van has 27000kms. Wife drives it to work twice a week and is.no speed demon. They machined the rotors and did a brake service. No change in noise.. I'm starting to think this could be a problem with the power transfer unit and the bearing that you indicated a potential problem point. Thanks again

It was probably a wheel bearing. I misdiagnosed my neighbors cars loud noise while turning left or right and turned out to be either left or right front wheel bearing

@zcamarta 4 месяца назад
@@jean-pierremallet3524 It ended up being the tires. The AWD models come with run flats. I changed them out for some michelin latitudes non run flat tires. Noise is gone.

My Problem started after the wife started regularly running through a Nice big Auto Car wash, i think it was Undercarriage high pressure wash that pushed water into Said Bearing killing what was left of its life. I replaced just the Bearing itself. Alittle tricky disconnecting the tiny pins in plug and remembering to put back together, I also used a Diff type ((Permatex)) vibration proof Sealant for reassembly, filled with proper Diff oil, BE SURE TO USE ANTI SEIZE LUBE FOR BOLTS, And be careful removing old ones,they can be stubborn due to "steel in aluminum corrosion,"Problem solved. Noise gone. Only had to purchase OEM Toyota dust cover ring and Bearing, consider Oil Seal behind coupler if it is leaking, mine was not, I didn't replace. Cheers. Hope it helps someone.

Does this apply for 2017 RAV4 XLE AWD AT Transmission? Why the NSK bearing replacement has no seal on it? Can I get that piece with the o-ring included?

From Mike Riley: The video in question refers to Toyotas 2006-2012 due to the differential bearing failure. Newer models will have this upgrade done at the factory. Replacement parts availability is dependent upon what Toyota thinks is applicable. It may be that by 2017 Toyota has chosen to not offer the components separately but rather with the viscous coupling assembly only. Contact Toyota to determine what is available along with any adjacent parts that are needed
@rojasbjm
@rojasbjm 3 года назад
@@autoprojobs4941 Sure! According to ToyotaDIYers, this part is unserviceable (1) (please see links at the end of the comment): As the company claims with `N03` code "This part is not supplied as an individual part because it's difficult to keep the function/quality of parts assembled/disassembled". Curious that is not the only part that is treated the same for Toyota (There are other parts that you can't buy at the dealer). Talking with my mechanic friend he told me that achieved to find the damaged bearing (an NTN 6819 LLU 95x120x13mm (2), also manufactured by NSK). I haven't talked with him since then, not sure if the new bearing has a seal or not. Not sure if the O-ring seal is needed since it seems like water can't enter since the enclosure is kind of "sealed". I'm afraid that Toyota will need to publish a TSB in the next couple of years for this kind of component since I'm seeing all over the internet that I'm not the only owner with this issue in the car (i.e. they extended the warranty for some RAV4 series 3 XA30 (3)). I'm putting all the info here in case someone is in the same situation as me. This bearing issue impacts several models of Toyota's. Although the cover and viscous assembly may be different, the bearing in question is the same. The factory bearing is proprietary to Toyota and not available separately although a comparable bearing (size wise) is available in the aftermarket but without the O ring groove. Water intrusion between the bearing and cover is not the issue but rather water intrusion into the bearing itself which is why Toyota implemented the large metal clad seal and redesigned deflector. It is those two parts that prevents bearing failure due to moisture. If a bearing through the aftermarket is preferable then use that and purchase the metal clad seal (41302-42050) and one of two deflectors based upon design (41252-42013 / 20). An OE bearing can be obtained by purchasing a new cover w/ bearing (90304-94005) and rob the bearing.

@cansmash

Just a heads up, I don’t think the revised deflectors will work unless you buy the updated coupler housing (cover). Based on the pictures in the TSB, the revised cover OD has a shoulder that the revised deflectors fit over top of. I can’t see the new deflectors working with the original covers, if you are trying to do the bearing replacement only. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. I’m planning on doing the bearing replacement on a 2013 Sienna. I think I’ll have to use the originally designed deflector, without the “metal clad seal”. Does anyone know if the RAV4 covers fit the Sienna couplers?

Hello, I have a question, I hope you can help me. I just bought a 2010 rav4 AWD and its making a humming noise around 30mph till 40mph if I let off the throttle noise stops. I think its coming from the transmission area. I read that it's normal on toyotas. Any suggestions?
@karlschauff7989
@karlschauff7989 3 года назад
There are many noises that Toyotas make that are supposedly "normal" but still indicate underlying issues.
@TransmissionDigest
@TransmissionDigest 3 года назад
Noise can be extremely difficult to diagnose. A noise affected by throttle position normally denotes a gear issue and not a bearing problem. Try to determine the source with the vehicle on a lift.

So is the Viscous Coupler a dry unit? It doesn’t share or use the oil from the rear differential does it?
@TransmissionDigest
@TransmissionDigest 3 года назад
The viscous coupler does contain oil (fluid) which is unique and separate from the differential oil. The viscous coupler is not serviceable but can be tested, as mentioned, to ensure that the oil has not leaked out into the differential. If the inner spline moves freely it's an indication that the oil has leaked out and that the viscous needs replaced. ~ Mike Riley

An annoying growling noise at 40-45 mph was driving me crazy. Apparently some part of the 2010 RAV4 powertrain is flawed by design, so replacing the part might not fix anything! I found this free and easy workaround and it eliminated the noise! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DBDPW6UYSqs.html
