This is a quick walkthrough of the destruction caused by broken compressor blades from the turbo being run through the engine.
This engine and turbo had done 278 500 miles when this happened - driving home from work one evening, start to accelerate onto the dual carriageway then a big bang and lots of smoke from the exhaust.
Vehicle wouldn't shut down as it was running on its own oil, so left it in gear (it's an auto), parked the nose against a tree to hold it and ripped the air cleaner off to block the inlet and choke it to death.
The vehicle's serviced every 4000 miles with semi-synth oil and a new Toyota oil filter. This, combined with the diagnosis of the turbo failure (fatigued turbine shaft, not a collapsed bearing) would imply it was more age than anything else.
Either way, it's chewed something in cylinders 3 and 4 which are now skipping slightly at low revs, and skipping a lot at high revs and throwing out large quantities of smoke and oil as can be seen on the steel plate I've wedged in to the side of the engine bay. I'm not giving up on this yet - when I have the time, I'm going to pull the head to see what carnage has been caused internally by the wayward turbo blades. I shall post a follow-up vid once this is done.
