This is by far the best video on the internet on this job in these Toyotas! Seems the rack and pinion goes bad pretty frequently, our 2008 has had a steering pop when turning for 50,000 miles and I just bought a 2007 with the same issue. I've seen some shops do this and they dropped the sub-frame! This is MUCH simpler the way you did it and thanks for showing the torque specs! I'll be doing this job on 2 different Rav4 this week! Subscribed!
My friend, you are the boss. Whether you intend to, or , it just comes naturally, you give the easiest to understand explanation and direction of how to accomplish this job. I am about to start. I will let you know how it goes. Thank you.
Great Video, My marks rubbed off, thought I would line up steering wheel after test drive at the yoke inside the cab. It was off 40 degrees. VSD or traction control kicked in at 20mph and what felt like the brakes kicking in, in pulses without my input. It also sounded like metal on metal, passenger side, but brake pads were good. Put steering wheel within a few degrees centered and it seems to be working fine now. Web search of same problem, different repair showed me that one. Intermediate shaft boot in engine bay was a pain. look at diagram in beginning to understand the clipping mechanism. Same boot on the bottom I just pried up with pry bar and it slipped off without messing with the clamp. Thanks again,
removing it n installing it, instructions from the manufacture: before starting place steering wheel straight ahead, place matchmarks between the sliding yoke n intermidiate shaft before removing the sliding yoke so those marks will be a reference when the new one comes in n that is all, now by me: when I take it out i install the new outer tie rods temporarily on the new one matching the same amount of rounds that the old one has n put them next to each other if no match: then you have to turn the shaft on the new one till you match both so it will be easier when installing it.
Out of curiosity, how do you center the new rack in its travel (assuming you uninstalled with the wheels pointing straight ahead)? We usually just eyeball it with the wheels on before attaching the intermediate shaft but was wondering if there was a better way.
@@JM-AUTO I notice the marking of the shafts...the new rack left to right was my curiosity. It could be anywhere but if you mean you lined up the tips of the outers old to new and the input shaft...that I missed
toyota says to remove the tranny on all these rav4s 2wd, awd, 2.4, 2.5 or 3.5l engine, but there is no need to that at all, if you watch my video you will see I had no dificulties at all and it is the same proccess for all these rav4s. thanks for visiting this channel I really appreciate it.
It was a great video except for the end part. The rubber boot seal is a nightmare to reinstall...and if you look at the video one can see that he didn't finish installing it correctly. I am still trying to figure it out...
thanks for sharing, no I did not install it incorrectly, the boot was shrank there for it did not cover the entire area that was supposed to cover n it is very easy to install it, it takes about 15 seconds of a minute I have done this so many times on rav4s but this one was shrank, all toasted, appreciate you looking at that.
what are the symptoms of a bad steering rack while driving? Does it feel like the steering stiff or loose? I recently purchased a 2011 Rav4 with oddly stiff steering. Power steering motor seems to work well at low speeds but the steering stiff at higher speeds and you bounce side to side in your lane trying to make very minor adjustments.
loose steering wheel , vibration, clunking, cracks, all of this while driving, but best thing to do is taking tires off and outer tie rods to really check the steering rack.
@@JM-AUTO I did that motor mount completely unbolted and lifted totally out of the way, my driveshaft is blocking the rack from coming out not enough clearance I'm working on a 2006 Rav4
it might be but it would be good if the front suspension is checked to make sure what is causing the issue, taking off the tires an checking from the tie rods to the inside of the steering rack n see if it has clunking or wobble.
This is likely to be no.2 intermediate steering shaft if everything else has been checked. A pop or clunk felt in the steering wheel whilst manoeuvring. Toyota did a service bulletin about it.
Got a 2009 RAV4 without the reservoir and when you turn the steering wheel the first two or three inches each way it's squeaks.... Is that a bad rack and pinion? anyway to lube it up?
steering rack does not really do the noise but most of the time the squeaks are caused by the power steering p or misalignment in the pulley or if there is a small leak it will squeak.
