Toyota Sequoia Review-- SHOWING ITS AGE

The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size three-row body-on-frame SUV capable of moving a large family and especially towing. The Sequoia has been updated over the years but the last full update was ten years ago and it is starting to show its age. Compared the best selling trucks like the Tahoe and Yukon which have been updated with modern fuel efficient engines, the Sequoia has a thirsty V8 engine. The Ford Expedition has even moved to a turbocharged V6 engine and a ten speed automatic to improve fuel efficiency. the cabin is roomy but suffers from hard plastics and a small centre head unit without apple or android operating support.

I bought my used 2008 (first gen) about 3 years ago. I replaced the stereo with proper nav and blue tooth. It is great for my wife and four girls. This thing is a beast and a great drive. The turning radius is amazing. Love it...

jmasoncar s I love Toyota but any truck will last 10+ years. This thing is old. Super cheap outdated interior. Itd be retarded to buy this is 2018. 2007?
@jmasoncars4452
@jmasoncars4452 6 лет назад
Mario L I agree with you but will any truck be problem free for 10 years and only lose around 20% of its purchase price? Yeah it's at the back of of the pack but I'd still say it's the most reliable and will hold its value the longest. Same with the tundra. It all depends on what the buyer is looking for.
@MLProductions.1
@MLProductions.1 6 лет назад
jmasoncar s the tundra is a huge upgrade over this in design and interior. If they upgrade this like they did the tundra it actually has a chance to sell. I completely agree that it will be the most reliable as well as most like hold it's value better(not %100 sure since it's such a old body) they just needa release at all new one it wayyy over due. My mom litterally sold her 06 seqouia with 110k last month with 0 issues ever . The car never had one problem. I have a 06 navigator and the front airbag suspension just fucked up at 99k miles(normal with any car on airbags) going to convert it to coils. Other then that its had zero issues as well.
@MLProductions.1
@MLProductions.1 6 лет назад
jmasoncar s my mom was actually going to upgrade to a gx470 Lexus but same thing she opted out since it's such a old car overall. People that want reliability don't want a 10 year old body car
@jmasoncars4452
@jmasoncars4452 6 лет назад
Mario L wow that's damn Good for a navigator! I would assume you've taken good care of it though as well. I have a 2008 Tacoma bought bran new $115,000 miles, only recently had to replace the alternator becuase the bearings were noisy but that's it. Tundra is definitely an upgrade I more so just meant it's still based on the 2007 platform. At the end of the day if it were my money I'd buy a new expedition if I needed a big suv.

Picked up an 02 Limited with 260k. Two repairs and new headlights were the only things needed. I changed out the head unit for a Nav/Bluetooth/backup camera to give me modern essentials. Rollin for less than $5000 into it. Using it mostly for a moving vehicle (trailer) and filling a house (cargo). I'm happy with it.

What a beautiful interior! Proper knobs and switches, proper shifter and a small screen instead having the dash dominated by stupid iPad wannabes. I wish car manufacturers would give you a choice when purchasing a vehicle these days even if was just the base model to have a proper ergonomic dash set up like this instead of the video game- take your eyes off the road to adjust anything dashes that are being produced currently.

People complain about fuel economy or outdated, it’s a big car so yes it will use more fuel. It’s outdated, because it works and it’s reliable. Why would I want a big ass screen infotainment and then having to go to get it service after 50k miles. With that truck you get your moneys worth. I personally prefers Toyotas reliability and durability than all the flashy electronic crap that will break right away. It’s a good looking truck and you can keep it for a good 20 years. Now if you’re one of those who change cars every 3 years then sure get something else. I’m getting one tomorrow is a 2018 and I’m very excited. I’m planning to keep it for another 15 years. Had my highlander for 12 years and I got my moneys worth as well.

Under 100k miles, the O2 sensors were replaced. Under 160k miles, the front sway bar end links failed. At about 220K miles, the front struts. The originals were fine. I just wanted to see if replacing the originals would improve the ride. It didn't. The ride was still fantastic. At about 262k miles, the driver side catalytic convertor was replaced. At 265k miles, the original belt tensioner started going bad. As a result, I moved up the timing belt service (at 90K mile intervals). The original water pump was ok but I had it replaced. Finally, last summer the valve cover gaskets were replaced. Oh yeah, I replaced the liftgate door handle myself three summers ago.

A extremely important SUV for Overlanding as is the 4Runner, I have 2 friends one of each & here on #VancouverIsland #BC where a litre of gasoline is $1.64 today regular. All of us go Overland trips and my friend who has the 4Runner gets ONLY 1 or 2 mpg more than the Sequoia when at 30-60 klms a hour (4x4 on dirt roads). If the Sequoia is $20,000 cheaper than a Tahoe or Armada then its worth it for fuel costs over a year @ 1 tank per week! But I'd probably get the Armada for the dependable engines even if I pay at the pumps in Canada.

Toyota has done a great job with the new Camry and the Corolla hatchback....however these markets are shrinking. They really should be focusing on the SUV market as thats where the market is. I know the new Rav 4 is coming out soon and the fact the old model still sells in outrageous numbers shows how much people love the brand. They really need a new 4Runner and Sequoia and to add the hybrid version of the C-HR.

The main reason I bought a 2018 Sequoia Platinum is parts availability. The more you change a product, the less parts will be available in store. The steering radius is great on this vehicle, you don't have to run over sidewalk to make a U turn. I mostly use it for long trips / towing an RV. It only uses more gas if you just putt around town, stopping at every other light; I use a small beater car for local driving. I really like the large side mirrors where I can see around my RV, they also fold in or out electrically, just push a button. This vehicle is equivalent to sitting in your living room when going on a long trip.

With over 160k miles in 10 years of owning a 2008 Toyota sequoia, we've only had to replace the water pump and the radiator. Yes, it's definitely a gas hog and it a bit boring to look at, but we have gotten our moneys worth out of it. Nowadays, this beast just sits outside and only used when we need to haul around the kids. Would I buy a 2018 model? NO. However, if you're looking for the reliability of owing a Toyota sequoia, I would pick up a used leased one.
