The Supra, just for the looks, wow, such a nice car.

Former 280 owner. Love the old school Z. I’m glad they finally up the HP in the newer offering. The Supra is a strong piece of kit as well. I can say I would be happy with either (I think). I’ve gave up my built 280 about 30 yrs ago. It was about 50 hp over stock which in todays standards isn’t anything significant. The L28 was rated at 170 hp. Think I was making 210-220. I could outrun 5.0’s in the 80’s which were rated at about 225 if I remember. Also outran 6.6 trans Ams & Z28’s. The only thing that ever got me was a 911 turbo. Pretty sure it was a turbo as it had a picnic table sized whale tale and flared fender wells. We came off a stoplight and I hung through first gear, lost a 1/2 car in 2nd and he drove out of my life in 3rd. Such great fun! We are blessed to have such potent vehicles from the manufactures. I’m still a little old school. I’m running a 2007 C6 Z now. Surprised that my mpg is about same as these cars however I’m making about 550 wheel (yes not huge numbers for an LS7). Boost is great & it wouldn’t take much to turn up the wick on these two, I’m sure. Beautiful cars, the both. Nicely done review.

The B58 is a far superior motor and drivetrain. No offense to the Z, but make no mistake, I think the A90’s are here to stay. Least for me in my garage!!!

Bottom line the Supra has one of the best if not the best engines going for it right now. And if BMW really advertised power the B58 is at least 425 HP at the crank. Fit and finish from what I saw is superior in the Supra and the BMW i-drive is away ahead of the Nissan. Basically not even close, Supra hands down.

Supra cool but i love my new z never was much a toyota guy used to drive a bmw.

I think the Z is gonna find itself in its own class of "not everyone has it, so its cool" for a bunch of reasons. The supra got introduced early enough with the b58 to juice that thing to high heaven, whereas half of us cant even see a Z in person yet on the streets. As much as i want to love the new Z its hard to love something that most of us have no access or exposure to

I think my two favorite sport cars of all time are the Porsche 911 and the Supra MK5. When it first launched, I was not very enthusiastic about it because it wasn’t a PURE Toyota but I understand that in this economy, the only way Toyota could give us a affordable sports car; would be to collaborate with BMW. Also knowing that the B58 engine is the closest we’re going to get the Toyota 2JZ(and might even be better than the 2JZ). The Supra also has a better road presence than the Z and like I said, the only other sport car I would consider over a Supra is the 911.

Great video! I had the opportunity to drive both of these cars back to back. They were both wonderful and I'm so glad they exist. I was surprised at how very different they were. The Supra had the better engine and chassis dynamics. It feels very polished and high tech. The Z had a better overall design and an old school, analog drivers car feel I found missing in the somewhat sanitized and digital Supra. I thought the Z had more soul and was more fun to drive fast. It's a personal preference thing.They are both quick, handle great and are very entertaining. You really can't go wrong with either one.

Beautiful, powerful, unique. A debate of taste. However, they again are making these machines unaffordable and that was what got them extinct in the first place.

Deciding factor for me is sound of inline 6 over the v6. Especially if going aftermarket, I think the Supra sounds much better. Otherwise, various trade-offs between both cars.

Z wins for being an actual Japanese sports car.

Looking forward to seeing Toyota put the GR Corolla engine into the 86, probably will outsell both the Supra & Z combined.

Great conclusion. A lot of reviews have ruled out the Z completely because the Supra is faster but posing the Z as a touring/cruiser is probably better. Plus, since it's cheaper to start with it's also cheaper to modify to spec whereas the Supra will always be a costlier build. For that, these two are the same. Not to mention, they are the last of their breed before the EVs push out the enthusiast vehicles.

Modern day 6cyl , RWD, turbo charged cars under $60k , this is where it's at. However, I'd prefer a 240sx .... or FR-S/ 86 /BRZ , to wring out that HP/torque (more useable power 100% of the time) , drift , light weight RWD , good MPG cars ... under $35k .

The BMW Supra is a better numbers car, but I like the Z better. It has more personality, and in my opinion looks much better. Plus there's the fact that Nissan has only built about 100 of them per month since they were released. You just don't see very many of them on the road. I'm not a BMW hater (used to own an m240i w/manual transmission), but I think Toyota dropped the ball by not building their own car.

Guys, you all keep saying you're "sure" BMW engines are underrated for power. B58 has been out there for years -- has no one dino'ed one yet? Let's put an end to this speculation. I tell you the reason it feels more than 380 HP is because when normal cars say X HP, that's peak HP, which means you don't get that power until you rev it out. Turbo engines move that peak power lower in the RPM range, so you can get most of that power in normal the RPM range. Just dino it!

Love the review but to say those engines are legendary is very questionable. Now if you want to say the VQ and 2jz are legendary that'll go without question

Supra for driving and Z for its beauty! Problem with the Supra is they stuffed all of the FT-01 design elements into a car the size of a BMW Z4. It’s too busy. Plus, it’s a “BMW” Supra! Verdict: buy the Z and drive with dignity😂….or buy the Z4.

The Supra is better in every way. Even though the Z came out years after the Supra it’s still based on the old Z and is not as fast in a straight line or track.

I would be fearful of Bring Money Withyou (BMW) lack of long term reliability in the Supra. Nissan these days is not known for their reliability either since joining up with Renault. You better have deep pockets if plan keeping these an extended period of time.

Nissan for me, spend the money diff on mods and tuning and we'll see whos the better sport car. At the end of the day the nissan is all nissan not a confused bmw.

I think if u compare Nismo Z edition it would be different from what I saw , nismo editon was better choice.

The basic chassis design of the Z is older, and the actual power of the B58 is higher. Unless you like the design of the Z, you should pick the Supra. But if you drive with MT, Z is good. The Supra's MT and pedal layout are in a weird position.

No need to think twice about this!...Z, hands down!...As an enthusiast, I want nothing to do with "Z-upra"! ...I love the older models of Supra -- NOT the current "Z-upra"!

These cars aren't even comparable. The Z still feels like a boat and is one step behind the Supra in every conceivable way. You definitely know where Nissan went to cut corners. Car is heavier then the Supra, car has lag with the twin turbo setup idk how they managed that. Lets be honest. The Z is a recycled regurgitated 370z that Nissan dealers are killing you with mark ups. Not to mention it won't even let you turn traction control fully off and rev it out. When the Z has less then half a tank of gas it starts cutting timing. So many negatives.

And still from January of 2022 placing a preorder deposit directly to nissan canada, i have not received any information or a allocation to my order so by default the z loses

At least they made the “Supra” (BMW) a manual… though it doesn’t have a manual e brake, at least they tried because people was getting too comfortable driving an auto which isn’t good. So they get props for that… a lot of companies don’t recreate a chassis with a manual if it wasn’t meant to be.

Supra for me. I lost all faith in Nissan as a manufacturer a long time ago. The z is nice but the unavailability of them, the boring engine and aesthetics just turn me off.

One of the things that's kind of has me baffled is why Toyota, a car company known for their reliability, have BMW, a car company that's known to be wildly unreliable, build their Halo car.... I mean, it's a nice car right now that it's new but we all know in 5 years it's going to break everywhere, right?

Fuckin traction control.. I never use it.. it becomes a hugely terrible crutch.. My 22 SS 1LE has about 4 levels of t/c and its off along with esc always, unless I get caught in rain.. It makes bad habits of just flooring your car when you shouldn't.. Its much faster to learn to modulate and accelerate thru and out of corners like your supposed to.. I guess I just can't stand the feeling of pulling power and closing throttle all the time.. I grew up driving fast stick rwd cars well b4 traction control was even a thing.. But it taught me to learn to feel the car, and read what its doing, the 1LE is not a car on a knifes edge, and easily caught, but there is a lot to be said about learning cornering, straight line braking, on throttle thru corners, left foot braking, ect.. Being in the correct gear is also huge, cars are easier to catch when your up in the rev range than on the bottom end of the tq peak.. IE:keep it above peak tq..
