About to finish up my 4wd conversion thanks to you guys!!! Already have everything installed, just waiting for the snap ring for the cv axle :/. I've spent roughly 3k and about 24+ hours working on it. Struggled really hard with the bearings so i ended up paying a shop $100 to do them for me. I would say the transmission swap and front differential install are incredibly easy, its the wheel hubs that are a night mare lolol. Thanks again for putting this out here!

It's good to know what you spent on the project. I figured hunting down and getting the correct parts was hard, but when I saw the hubs, I realized that it is a huge pain lol. I'll probably do what you did and spend a little money to avoid the headache.

I just recently did this conversion on my truck a few weeks ago, everything went pretty good and everything works great. Still sorting out a few issues, for some reason driver cv popped out of diff a little causing a leak from the seal and I can’t get the cv to pop in any farther. and had an issue where the hub lock nuts weren’t tight enough and probably decreased the life of my new oem bearings but luckily I caught it after 5 days and replaced the nuts and tightened good. great video! I watched the first one before I did the swap but ended up doing it before this video came out.

@@TabletSnipesHey I know you commented this a while ago. I’m still learning how to work on vehicles. I feel comfortable doing the swaps on the transmission and transfer case. Is swapping the wiring harness and ECU super difficult? Is it worth the trouble?

I just picked up most of the needed parts for this conversion from a guy who is doing a manual and solid axel swap on his newest project Tacoma from the same year as mine so he wasn’t needing almost any of the parts I need for a decent price! And it had similar KM’s/mileage. Can’t wait to get it done!! Also you figure out how to get the speedometer working?

That's great that you found a ton of the parts all in one! That will save you some cash for sure. I did get the speedo working, you have to extend the speedo wires by about 10 inches or so and the speed sensor is different from the 2wd one but I found one on eBay for cheap and put it in. The plugs are the same.

Least I'm not the only one that did that to my my truck. Just remember the transmission originally pulled out of there both transmissions of the same any difference is the rear of the which you probably already know about. When I did mine I found out a great deal of information about the two types of transmissions at Toyota made for the 4Runner , Tacoma , tundra and Sequoia. From 95 all the way up to 2004. There's a few differences between the years and I found out.

Quick tip from AvE, I know it won't help ya now, but if you put the larger part of the swivel joint that holds the bearings in the oven for 20 mins at 350, wait until it cools a little, the bearing will slide right in no problem without even a bearing press. Ive seen him do it, it's pretty cool, misses might not like her pies smelling like crude oil though.

Put those bearings in the freezer for an hour. It will press in a lot easier. You can also heat the hub right before you put the bearing in.

Funny you should say that because it was close to zero outside the day we filmed this and that garage doesn't have heat lol in hindsight we should have just heated up the spindle a little and they would have probably fallen right in.

I have a 2003 tundra V6 4x4 with 5 speed manual that I hit the concrete wall at 35 mph. Insurance totaled it out, bought it back. Now in the the process to get another 2003 tundra not 4x4. Using the wrecked truck as a donor.

Definitely looks like a decent amount of work. I have a 13 regular cab 4x4 with the 2.7 4 cylinder and I would really like to put a v6 drivetrain in it. It seems possible what do you think? I’m in ny and we have to pass emissions with no check engine lights.

I would think the best way to do that is to find a wrecked donor truck that way you can get all of the wiring harnesses and the little things that you will need to do the job. That would be my best advice for that

For the transmission you use a auto 4x4 and the transfer case you use a j spec from 4runner or tacoma right alease same gear ratio ? What about the front Def have to be same gear ration? And do you know if I use a manual front Def can I still use the same set up?

HELP !!!! Can someone point me in the right direction in resolving my 98 4Runner issue? When I engage 4H it goes in silent but when it goes back to 2H (disengage) the is a loud bang (like a sled hammer bang). The is a delay for about 30 second to disengage as I drive down the road. My other 4Runner does a loud click only. I don't know the history on the car but I have changed all the oil already.

I’m not switch to 4wd I’m taking the 6inch fabtech lift off my truck. I was wondering about the spindles because my truck has the big 6inch spindles. Can you use pre runner steering knuckles and convert them to 4x4 steering knuckles.. if any one has advice on this project I would love to hear them

Can the factory center caps be used with hole sawing the center out? I am in the middle of this swap my self and I am down to collecting pieces for the front driveline, I really like the looks of factory wheels, but would like manual hubs, obviously it also keeps costs down if you don’t have to buy another set of wheels, but 4Runner and LandCruiser wheels offer a center that uses manual hubs.

I left my center caps off and I kind of like the looks of it but yea you can use a hole saw to cut the center out and still be able to turn the lock out. Believe it or no the locking hub fills in that opening pretty well.

That's awesome, Tacoma's are great! I'm not 100% sure but I believe you can swap out the center section of the rear axle to the e locker. The only thing I'm don't know is how to sort out the electronics.

Interested - when you lock the front differential into 4wd does that mean you’re always in 4wd? Or the differential is always ready for 4wd when you shift the transfer case? I’m seriously considering this on my prerunner! Thanks for some great videos!

Thank you and thanks for watching! The front diff will be "locked in" all the time but when the transfer case is in 2wd and the hubs are unlocked nothing will be turning in the front. Then when I want 4wd I just lock the front hubs in and pull the transfer case into 4wd and it's good to go! You should definitely go for it, it's totally worth it!!

Hey buddy. I just finished my 4wd conversion and have used your video for reference. I locked the front add with the worm clamp. Did you get any vibration from locking the cvs together?

I haven't had any issues with vibration, when you lock the actuator in place with that clamp, that isn't locking the axles together, it's just simply locks the diff into 4x4

Hello, I’m doing a conversion, but I’m stuck on something… for the Speedo sensor, do I need to get a anither speedo instead of the original one? If so can you provide the right speedo sensor? Thank you!

Yes you will need a different speedo sensor. I looked one up on ebay for like a 2000 4runner. The plugs are the same but you will have to extend the wiring approximately 10 inches or so to reach back to the transfer case. Thanks for watching!

Hard to tell where the interference is with the wheel spacers in the video, but could you take the outer part of the hub off, then fit the spacers? Then reassemble the hub and install the wheel.

Unfortunately the spacer hits on the nuts and studs of the lockout, I might be able to spin it in a lathe and make a little more clearance.

Another idea might be to mill essentially half circles, only as deep as necessary to clear the hardware, for each of the 6 studs and nuts with a jig, basically 60 degrees apart. You would still retain the vast majority of the inner circumference for hub centricity of the spacer to hub fitment and for hub centricity for the outer diameter for wheel fitment with virtually no compromise in strength. Just a thought.
