Here we are with part three of this five part series on positional rifle shooting. Today we are focusing on the seated position shooting, both supported and unsupported. This is a great position to practice, as it has applications in the competition arena as well as in the field for hunting.
Once again, I want to stress the point that even if you don't shoot competitions like Palma, NRL, PRS, etc., having experience in these skills will pay dividend towards your overall proficiency in shooting.
This stuff is very easy to practice with dry-fire in the comfort of your home. It can be a blast to set up little mini-competitions with your shooting buddies and develop a simple course of fire to induce a little pressure and stress.
Next up.... the kneeling position. Stay tuned, I'll have it out in a couple days.

Cheers for the vid. Another variation of the position where you are seated with both knees high and balancing the mag on your left elbow - try placing your left hand on the underside of the rear of the stock. With your support hand over top of your trigger hand you are having to break position quite a bit in order to run the bolt.

I’ll play around with that. I think I’m picturing what your saying and that’s how I typically will shoot seated. I weighed that Vudoo last night and she came out at 21.8 lbs. haha. The balance point is a couple inches forward of the magwell (where I like it for NRL) causing it to be very nose heavy in that position. I had to have my support hand on top just to keep it from rocking forward. Haha. It’s an absolute pig. You are spot on though, it was awkward to run the bolt that way. I appreciate the info, I’m going to experiment with that today a little and see what I can come up with. -TPM

@@triggeredprecisionmachinellc Pretty much the exact same weight as my rig. I found it helpful to add a single point sling to the mix, switch from rear support hand to forward, use a vertical left elbow on the left knee; and tighten the sling with the rifle in a slightly upward cant prior to dropping on to the target.

Awesome, I've never thought of using a single point. That's a fantastic idea. It's gonna be raining tomorrow so I'll play around with that in the shop. Very cool, thanks for that info.

Would you use the same variation and setting your body up shooting from the seated position more freehand as you would let’s say off shooting sticks?
@triggeredprecisionmachinellc
Great thing to bring up. Yes, I would build a good seated position up in a similar way, and put more effort into supporting the rear of the rifle to gain stability. This would be the exact same as shooting off a barricade, seat back, or other prop in a match.
