Trans Woman: How did I find my "female" voice? 

I just found you two today and you are both so great! I came out to my wife two months ago, and we're still navigating a lot of the early things. One of our early hurdles has been all the negativity online. We are happily married for over twenty years and are more in love now than ever. But it seems like so many of the stories we were finding online were about the tragedies. It was so frustrating and disappointing for us. We felt like we were in love, we felt like we were in a good place but it was like the internet was saying "nope, you're doomed". Little by little we're finding that it's more about the internet loving bad news, and in reality there are many many couples that survive and thrive through transition. Your channel is such a ray of sunshine! Thank you thank you thank you!

Testosterone thickens the vocal chords giving them a deeper more (Male) sound. Estrogen does not touch the Vocal chords therefor MTF on Estrogen will not automatically get a more feminine voice. Voice training is where its at ♥ Thanks for sharing this girls. Much love :3

Thanks for making this video! I'm training to be a speech-language pathologist and transgender voice training, as well as other voice and speech challenges, fall within the scope of that practice. It's really interesting to learn about the physiological reasons why someone's voice sounds the way it does. It has to do with the size and shape of not only the vocal folds but also the vocal tract through which the air resonates before exiting your mouth. However, there are a lot of psychological influences as well. As you mentioned in the video, when listening to the recording of a person's voice or speaking to a stranger over the telephone, we can usually pretty quickly and often subconsciously assume their gender. While the pitch of the voice plays a role in our perception, manners of speaking has a lot more to do with how we perceive gender through voice. A speech-language pathologist who specializes in transgender voice therapy specifically can give advice and training on speech habits and other behaviors that will really influence people's perception of your gender identity, and, maybe most importantly, can give you advice on what not to do with your voice so that you don't end up damaging your vocal folds and end up with a different problem. Thanks for another great video. I love your channel. I am a 64 year old trans woman. I began my transition 7 years ago, and try as I might, I have always struggled with my voice. I get sir’ed on the phone 100% of the time, less in person, but still about 50% of the time. For years I’ve been telling myself that it doesn’t matter to me, but of course it does. It’s very painful. I have found a new voice therapist recently and I have confidence that this time something good will happen. Wish me luck!

Singing really helped me with my feminine voice too. I started by singing along with male singers with higher pitch (Queen, the Eagles) then moved on to female singers. I also did lots of breathing exercises. At the start it took more work to speak in a higher pitch so I would run out of breath quickly.

No idea if you even read comments anymore on an old video like this, but did your trained voice sound weird to you at first? That's my biggest hangup at this point. My voice still sounds weird, like I have more range I should be putting effort into going to, but every time I try it doesn't change it whatsoever. My voice sounds decent to my ear as I'm speaking, but in recordings I swear it just sounds like my old guy voice pitched up a little bit and that really messes with my self confidence. Yet lots of people I have asked about my voice say it sounds good to them and not like a guys voice whatsoever. I think I just have to use my voice more in a bunch of different situations where nobody ever clocks me as male, to truly trust that my voice sounds good. But I guess I'm a bit disheartened because I wanted my voice to sound better to me as I'm speaking and it just sounds decent, not great, to my own ear.
