Transformers One: A Solid Maybe? 

I call it The MatPat Effect. If a big franchise makes a big Lore change in an official piece of media, you get the feeling of inner rage from the fact that you may have to re-think everything you knew about said franchise.

There was an interview with the director. He said that they gave him the "Transformers Bible" with all the fiction and lore in it and said "Make something original with this". And that's exactly what they did and it looks great for the moment. Also, I wouldn't say that the planet's organic. What it looks to be is living metal, constantly melding and shifting like those mountains in the trailer, and sometimes creating parts that split off and form into its own sentient creature like those deer/gazelle we saw. It's not pure organic stuff like plants and real animals. Everything is still pure metal, but it is alive somewhat.

Here is my theory: The bodies in the cave Alpha Trion is in are the dead Thirteen Prime, and the cogs he gave the main cast were pulled from the dead bodies, making them have those glowing moments that we see. Also, WHO DESIGNED SOUNDWAVE?! THE MIDDLE OF HIS BODY IS GONE AND HIS LEGS ARE TOO LONG! It’s like someone looked at the G1 box art and said “Ah, yes. Incredibly disproportionate” It looks good besides that though.

I love how megatrons d-16 design is a reference to the marvel comics design The black bucket helmet and the yellow eyes

A few things, Orion says something along the lines of “we’re worker bots, we can’t even transform” if I had to guess it’s just miners/workers don’t have t-cogs so those in power have an easier time keeping them in line and it seems like Alpha Trion (who does have his strange lion/unicorn/wolf mode) gives them the t-cogs from the corpses of the thirteen. The other thing is we see plenty of bots on the surface so I believe that’s probably just another thing that has to do with Orion and crew being workers. Steve Buschemi is Starscream and if I had to guess the scene where we see him, Shockwave, and Soundwave is during the war.

I never understood why people get so upset when the lore changes in a new adaptation of the franchise because it literally happens EVERY SINGLE TIME, each show and movie and universe has its own lore and way of interpreting certain events and it is honestly my favorite part of the franchise, there’s always something new. And I can totally understand just objectively not liking what the story is because you don’t like the ideas instead of disliking it because it’s different, but I’ve seen a lot of people hating online because it isn’t what they grew up with and that always just confused me. This to me was clearly made by people passionate about the franchise who did their research, even if not absurdly deep, they tried and that’s all I’ve ever really wanted, people who care to try. I cannot wait for this movie because to me it seems like an amazing time! And I really hope Megatrons arc gets enough attention and isn’t just thrown in at the end.

I think the surface being covered with plants makes cybertron way more interesting, and I love it when transformers aren't the only species on cybertron. Over all I'm so excited

If anyone has some reservations about the frequent humor, please remember that a first trailer is not always representative of the movie. I remember many good animated movies had some shaky first trailers (Spider-Verse specifically) so I think we should wait a bit until more is shown later on.

I don’t understand why people are so short sighted when it comes to what the franchise genuinely needs. This is what the franchise requires if we don’t want it to die along with us and we want new fans in the fandom. I really hope this does its job and gets new generations of fans

My biggest hangup was Bumblebee even being in it, like hes always been the rookie, the young brother to everyone. But now hes an important founder of the entire lore....

In the trailer Orion says "we are just lonely worker bots who cant transform" so it seems they cant transform due to their class system, probably something Sentinel Prime decided

I was so worried you were just gonna hate all over this thing. I personally am VERY excited for this movie. The animation looks amazing, I really like the designs, and I’m very interested with what they’re going to do with the lore. Looks great and I want it to be September now.

I absolutely adore this. I dont mind the lore changes at all, it just seems like everything I’ve wanted from a transformers movie.

I actually like the idea of the T-cog. Look at TFP Bumblebee and Starscream without them. Even without the Cog, they look the same as with it. The T-cog seems to be what tells the body where every part goes for the vehicle mode, and where the parts should be stored in robot mode.

Beast Machines called, they want their "I am transformed" back

I think the way the trailer is approaching transformation is unlike Functionism where alt modes decided your place on the social ladder, transformation sounds like something reserved for the upper class

This does look like a nice. However, I do agree with almost everything you said and think it was a wrong call to have Bumblebee be apart of this because he’s supposed to be the younger generation who are later led by Optimus the wiser generation. I think maybe Ratchet could’ve worked better since he’s usually depicted as an old friend of Optimus.

When I saw bumblebee with his battle mask on, I thought he looked like a Bionicle.

I'm really hoping they give us a lot of infrastructure lore with this one. Beings who are their own vehicle really brings questions on how their road and transit systems work

I think the lore is mostly akin to the g1 origin story with the quintessons making cybertronians for work purposes, keeping them underground to prevent them from getting t-cogs and having power over the quintessons but that could just be my interpretation

I actually think megatron didn't give bumblebee his name here, only that he shortened b-127 by removing the numbers to make it sorta roll off the toungue better. I might be wrong tho as this is just a theory based on a single scene in a single trailer, so we'll have to wait and see

Honestly I was expecting you of all people to despise this trailer. I'm still getting used to the humor and their faces, but overall I'm excited for it, especially after someone behind it came out and said it's not going to be 100% a comedy

4:49 I imagine the transformation cog being something like a GPU - it's a specialised subsystem that is delegated one specific task, but does it extremely well. It's a piece of anatomy that allows a Cybertronian to transform instinctively without occupying their attention consciously controlling every movement of every transformation joint. Everything else you said about the lore, I agree with.

I've seen people compare the trailer's humor to Marvel movies and saying that it should've been darker and more serious since it's a prequel. Personally, I see it as potentially more akin to Animated, Cyberverse or Earthspark where all the humor is just hiding some mature and compelling writing that the trailer is simply not good at conveying like any other trailer for an animated film.

I enjoyed that trailer so much even the line where D-16 says "At some point I'm going to kill you." or something like that and Orion is like "I'll hold you to those terms." got a laugh out of me knowing what's going to happen in the future, also I could be wrong but I saw something where the director is already saying it's connected to the bayfilms....yeah explain why this Cybertron isn't a beehive looking planet...

Maybe the casts don't have T-cogs because on this Cybertron Quintessons enslaved all Cybertronians and removed their T-cogs (and only a select few were allowed to keep them)? That would explain why there are those obvious gaping holes on their chests as if something is missing... I'm more intrigued by those corpses of the Thirteen. What the hell happened there? Did Quintessons just straight up murdered them all sans Trion?

I feel like it’s unlikely, but I think it would be interesting if this movie is about them fighting off the quintessons and then starting the golden age, and maybe Optimus and megatron becoming enemies in a later film

Personally I absolutely adore what I’m seeing from One. From the designs, to the environments, to the voices, and even the potential plot beats. I think this is the one (hehe) *I* have been looking for. Bumblebee has always been my favorite and I’m glad to say I’m REALLY loving this newer iteration.

It’s worth mentioning that in g1 the autobots invented transforming during the war, so the possibility of them not being created with that ability checks out with g1 at least

When bee said "BADASSATRON" in that deep voice, it sounded like megatron

They target new young fans and for old fans. Fully animated. Origin story. No humans. Before the great war. Optimus and megatron still friends as Orion pax and d16 . So I'm okay with this. It's something new. I wonder what will happen in the end of this movie? Will Optimus and megatron go to their separate ways in the end? Will the actual war starts? The beginning of 2 factions? I'm very interested.

My biggest problem was that they looked like clay in this first trailer. It just felt unnatural. It was probably just the lighting as the new trailer looks much better.

The lore in this film is a completely separate continuity. The film overall is going to be a serious film.

Some fan theories is that the main 4 have super powers-like cogs because they got the cogs from the dead members of the 13. Also, seems like the Alpha Trion figure turns into a horned wolf, so furry up! XD I have great hopes for the movie. Seeing the toys and trailer only raised them. Anyway, great video as always! Now Hasbro better turn those robot-rabbit-deers into a core class and call them "Petro-rabbits". Kup needs something to hunt.

There's only one thing I'm hoping for, Frank Welker Soundwave. Don't wanna expect anything more. I do love this trailer and the fact that when they get t-cogs, they are struggling to transform, which makes since since they've never done it and have to learn how.

It’s crazy how much discourse there is for this movie. I can completely see why, especially when people basically wanted a full movie of the Bumblebee opening on Cybertron. I for one am actually looking forward to One because it’s something _different._ It’s a brand new Transformers movie that doesn’t reek of Bay explosions and unfunny suggestive jokes. I’m down for this film’s humor and don’t mind this being geared towards kids. As long as it’s entertaining and has interesting lore and characterization, then I’m good. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing a much more casual and friendly version of Megatron before he becomes the tyrant we all know. Just seems like a fun concept for him and Orion to be buddies before the war. I’m also glad to see that you’re cautiously optimistic for this film. I can see the criticisms you’ve pointed out, so hopefully that stuff will be properly addressed in the film. I will say, I too like the designs, but I felt that there was something off about the faces, so your comment about them looking like furries is hilarious. lol They do sort of have a Navi look to them. Maybe it’s just me, but I also get a little bit of a Bionicle fibe from these designs and animation. The Quintison troopers in particular look like villains from a Bionicle movie, what with the faces looking like masks, big red and doughy looking eyes, and bio organic designs. And yes, please have the actual Optimus keep the blasted mask on for the one minute of screen time he’ll probably have! Either way, I’m looking forward to this. One actually has me both excited and amused by it, while Rise of the Beasts simply made me scratch my head for the studio’s inability to learn from Bumblebee’s higher points. Heck, even Chris Hemsworth sounds great as Orion. I never found him to be a bad actor anyway. The MCU just wanted a goofy Thor is all.

So I have some thoughts about everything I’ve seen and heard about for this movie, and I’ll probably explain it in two comments. Starting with designs, voices, and lore, I definitely like a decent amount of the designs I’m seeing. From what I’ve heard, the designs are based on the past 40 years of varying Transformers iterations, and I think it shows. Orion Pax (pre T-cog) looks more like his G1 counterpart, and D-16 (pre T-cog) looks more like G1 comics Megatron. When they get their T-cogs, Orion Pax looks more like IDW Orion (at least the design we saw in the 2-pack with Senator Shockwave), and Megatron looks more like his G1 show design, albeit with some Cyberverse inspiration; and it looks like they’ll go full on Cyberverse inspiration when he becomes proper classic Megatron. The Seeker designs seem inspired by Cyberverse, Shockwave looks like he was ripped right out of the Highmoon games, and Soundwave looks like a more G1 version of his Bumblebee movie design, albeit with what looks like Earthspark Soundwave body proportions. Alpha Trion’s alt mode is actually based on that lion-unicorn creature he turned into for his Titan's Return figure. By the way, when I saw that Alpha Trion didn't have an actual beard this time around, instead now having a long chin that mimicked the beard, I wondered what you thought of it. I was thinking to myself "Well even if this isn't the exact head design Perspective wanted to see used, at least he got the "No facial hair" wish fulfilled for Trion". Personally speaking, Trion's head reminds me of Elder Vakama from the first 3 Bionicle movies. For the voices, I'm mostly okay with them. I like the work Chris has put into Orion, especially since he had help from Peter Cullen; though does anyone else feel as though he sounds like John Cena for some of the voice clips we heard? The VA for Megatron sounds nice for a "younger-sounding" Megatron. If Scarlett puts as much effort into her role as Elita-1 as she did for the Mermaid Princess in the first SpongeBob movie, I think we'll be good. I really wish they had Keegan do a variation of his Toad voice in order to morph it into something akin to TFA Bumblebee's voice; though according to Keegan, it was the director who wanted Keegan to use his regular voice. Also, yes, Steve Buscemi is voicing Starscream. For the lore, it looks like they're taking the lore of the Quintessons ruling Cybertron, alongside the caste system lore and giving it a sort of TFA-like spin of changing something familiar into something new. From what I've heard, the workers and lower class are forced to live underground while the upper class and the Quintessons live on the surface. Also, while Megatron may not be the one to start the general revolution, it does seem that he will be the start of the Decepticon cause. If you look at Starscream, Soundwave, and Shockwave, none of them have Decepticon emblems, whereas Megatron (even as D-16) has the Decepticon emblem on his shoulder, so it seems he will be the start of the Decepticons, he just won't be the start of the entire initial revolution. I also like the Prince of Egypt-style Moses and Ramses relationship they clearly have going for Orion Pax and D-16. I think it will help to flesh out their brotherhood and make their divide a bit more tragic; I’m really interested to see how that goes.

I'm glad you enjoyed the trailer. I also think it looks fun. I also like the art style for a different reason. I like that despite being animated, they decided to go more realistic look on the metal. Maybe realistic isn't the right word, maybe hyper exaggerated is better. I just like that you can tell they're metal. I know who storyboarded this film. He says the reason he wanted to work on this film is due to the strong emotional ending. I'm not revealing who it is because people on the internet are fucking nuts and I don't want people harassing him online. I will add that the storyboard artist has won multiple Oscars and other awards for his previous work in live action and animation.

Honestly as a Big bay fan I’m really liking what I’m seeing. The animation looks smooth and crisp, the designs look good,voice acting sounds good. However the one design I don’t like is alpha trion, his mouth his just… now

G1 made the Tcog idea related to the war. The autobots invented transforming to get the leg up on decepticons. In prime, only almagamus could transform, and he was a multiple morphing character, not even really a transformer. Everyone else was born with it after he and a bunch of other primes died.

Very fair points, more fair than other people who just seem to hate everything they're seeing. Personally, I'm loving what I'm seeing, far more than what I saw with Rise of the Beasts, anyways. I think delving into this story is the franchise's best chance to make a truly great movie. Even the ones people put at the top, 86, 07, and Bumblebee, I can't call any better than a 7/10 for me. I just hope they nail the emotional moments, since if they really make us care about Orion and D-16, their friendship turning bitter could be really heartbreaking to see play out in animated form.

I don't think this counts as Megatron giving him the name B, because Bumblebee's name isn't B, it's Bumblebee, or Goldbug, Or B-127. B has only ever been used as his nickname, and it's not very special of Megatron to give Bumblebee a single-syllabuled nickname which was just the first letter in his name anyway

The upper class have transformation cogs, as seen in the trailer where they jetpack across a race, while the lower class dont in order to suppress them. Also, because they got their cogs from the bodys of the 13 primes, that may be why elita calls them "powers" or maybe shes talking about something else that the 13 primes cogs may have given them.

I HAD THE SAME REACTION. I loved the 2005 IDW Megatron and was super disappointed about Megatron getting downgraded to “D-16”. However I thought the jokes was good and the designs were amazing

I won't repeat my biggest problem with the trailer (the goofy tone) as that dead horse has been beaten over and over. The other big issue I have is that once again, Hasbro shows ZERO creativity to which G1 characters they spotlight. Elita-1 doesn't get enough attention? She gets more attention than 95% of G1 characters, IMO. That's the problem: Hasbro keeps spotlighting the same boring 7: Optimus, Bee, Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, and (take your pick of Shockwave, Elita-1, Soundwave's cassettes, Jazz, Wheeljack, Seekers, etc.). It's the same G1 guys over and over in any form of media (comics, cartoons, etc.). There are people who complain that the franchise is too G1 focused. G1 isn't the problem; the real problem is that Hasbro keeps using the same tiny cast of G1 characters over and over, ignoring the 98% of all the other G1 TFs. What about Blaster? Brainstorm, Nightbeat, Swerve, Sixshot, Kup, Blurr, the Predacons, Quickswitch, Fort Max, Crosshairs, the Micromasters, the Pretenders, the Seacons, etc, etc, etc? Hasbro, you're telling me that Cyclonus or Galvatron wouldn't sell? There are other interesting TF characters out there besides Starscream. Imagine how boring Marvel Comics would be if all the stories featured Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Wolverine? Or if all DC Comics stories only featured Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern? What a boring world we'd live in.

I think this is what Transformers needs More experimentation and risk taking And if it’s written well, then I can look past a bad joke or some wonky designs (Except Soundwave, they did my boi so dirty with his design)

My theory is that the reason why they don’t have transformation cogs, is because they are either dockworkers or minors, not needing transformation cogs in order to fulfill their purpose. This could also also have some elements from prime and IDW, with the council being functionist, and locking you into a job based on alt mode or no alt mode. And from what I’ve seen, the designs that don’t transform look kinda like action Masters

I tuned in at 6am on Paramount's youtube channel to view the trailer live, but had to wait another hour for the trailer to premier. Since Paramount and Hasbro did this launch the trailer in a small craft into space countdown stunt. So I tuned back in at 7am, and Bam! Trailer hits the screen live, and I got to admit, I like it. Sure, I agree that the characters look like Fortnite skins, but like how Transformers One looks. I rewatch the trailer a few time on the Hasbro Pulse youtube channel, and soon after, Hasbro reveal Studio Series 112 Optimus Prime for TF:One. Looking forward to seeing the movie in theaters in September. -It's funny how you assume that Alpha Trion looks like a furry, because it's true. His mainline toy shows his alt mode as a horn wolf lion animal.

My only real gripe about the designs is that the faces look very elastic for being made of metal, which I wouldn’t be as off put by if it wasn’t for all the mechanical detail they put into the eyes

I've waited 14+ for a movie set on Cybertron focusing on the war. And this is what they give us.

If anything, I view Transformers One being a prologue to a new continuity of Transformers.

I quite liked what I saw, but what made me hate this trailer to the core was the lack of knowing what continuity this was going to be in. I saw rumours that it was going to be set in the live action which boiled my piss until i saw it was going to be its own seperate thing. Also you were right about Alpha Trion being a furry, because he turns into the unicorn lion again, you know, the one mode he seems to have consistently other than a spaceship for some reason.
