After some struggling, I get custom-made aluminum engine bay cowls installed for both the splash guards and the radiator shrouds. Pretty nice stuff, but some modification was required (and not unexpected).

Thanks for the video. The shrouds make a BIG difference. It also makes things harder to work on, which, I suspect, is why so many cars don’t have them. 😊 I manufactured my own using the original as a template. Hopefully it will keep more water off the shelf.

I've noticed a bit of interference, but not enough to take them off. I think they'll be nice to have. Thanks!

Looks great. Built to last now. Your windshield install inspired and helped me to install mine (not a Triumph). Nerve wracking but went well with some help from my wife. Thanks for the videos, I have learned a lot.

Thank you. That's great to hear! Yes, it was nerve wracking. I was just waiting for that crack sound!

Glad to see that you rounded off the top edge I did too but also fitted an edging to it to cover both the cut part and to finish it off.

Yeah, I figured I would gouge the heck out of my arm at some point. I think the stock, paper ones are like that, though, with the sharp edge. Wasn't worth the stitches!

Nice job and well done with sticking with it. Same as most 'copy' parts, a little adjustment is always required. One point though, since it's from the UK and going on a British car, its aluminium, not aluminum lol. Wish I was at that stage though, just been out filling and sanding bodywork today on my spitfire 1500.

Ha! I missed my opportunity, Barry. Damn it. I love they way the Brits say aluminium. Thanks!

Nice job ~ as you said the left side is 4 sure bowed but is fine with the mods. great vids of the restoration

@roundtailrestoration 4 года назад
Thanks, Van. It is still bowed a bit after I played with it, but I may be able to play with it a bit more. I'm more concerned that, under pressure, it'll rub against some paint somewhere and scratch it off. But, I do like the looks of it!

I have a feeling there are two types for the spitfire. I have the MK2 and the ones you have there are for the MK3 onward I think? Not 100 % The MK1 & 2 are more rounded rather than straight cut. I haven’t fitted mine yet but I know I had to order the right versions.
@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration 4 года назад
Yes, Lee, it appears that you are correct. The gentleman that made them didn't offer anything other than "Spitfire". I had done some research on this, but kinda took a chance because the entire set wasn't much more than just one side of the ones made of cardboard (or whatever it is).

hey Chris, great video....would love to have a set of those for the GT6....if I cant find them in the aluminium I might order the cardboard ones or if i find someone that has a set, have them trace them out on some cardboard for me and I will make them from that....looks pretty snappy....Dot lookin good!!!!
@DavidPlass
@DavidPlass 4 года назад
I was thinking the same thing - trace them from someone else's. ;-) On the GT6, the driver's side (LHD) rails also hold the wiring harness for the headlights.

Thanks, Robert. I know the guy makes them for the GT6 as well, and I think they are louvered. If you search for the group buy on the forum, you can find the guy that set it up. He might do another buy soon.

I don't know. I got them as part of a group buy on The Triumph Experience. Here's a link to the forum thread (www.triumphexp.com/forum/spitfire-and-gt6-forum.8/gt6-and-spitfire-valence-boards-and.1650523/). Maybe you can reach out to the guy who started it. I think he mentioned he was going to do another one.

Should they not have been fitted outside of the radiator supports?
@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration 4 года назад
If they are supposed to be that way, I couldn't get them to. I tried. Looking at the Triumph Spitfire and GT6 Guide to Originality, is shows them going on the inside of the support (picture 1.61, if you have the book).

Chris, would you be able to get the thickness of the aluminum by chance?

Yup, no problem. I probably won't get back over there until mid-week, but I'll get it. As long as my old-ass remembers!

Hey MrSteve, the aluminum is 2.5mm thick.

Made mine out of diamond plate aluminum. They look ok and do keep,a lot of road crime of the engine.

Same here that diamond plate looks great with a little polish. I just made my own template out of poster board and got the shape I wanted for my car , easy to cut with the shears and tidy up the edges and 20 years later still looks good

Honestly wouldn't run cooler without them?
@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration 4 года назад
That's a good question, Sammy, I don't know. The factory started using them pretty early in the Mk1 run (it was an option before that) so I guess the engine getting dirty from the road was a larger impact than the heat tunnel they create. I'm sure there's a lot of argument about that, though.

From a guy called adunn on ebay ?
@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration 4 года назад
I don't know, actually. The guy is out of England and a member of the Triumph Experience Forum set it up. There was a bunch of us on a group buy. They were shipped via Canley Classics and the name I have on the invoice is not, nor resembles, adunn.

next step. get rid of those crappy stromberg carburetors and put in a dual port weber from bologna and the 4 pipe header to handle the excess air flow. sounds better and adds 10hp to the anemic 1.3L on my '71 MKIV
@roundtailrestoration
@roundtailrestoration Год назад
But I just got the carbs running right! Also, the Mk2 has more of a header than any of the other cars. Webers may be a solution for my TR4. Thanks for watching!
