With a bit of a squeak from the the rear of the #TriumphSpitfire Project I think it's time to take a look at the suspension and see what can be done to refresh it with some new parts from #MossEurope . I've decided to upgrade the shock absorbers with ride adjustable pair made by #Spax

I enjoy these Spitfire projects Steve, great stuff. This was the first job I did on mine when I got it, except I kept the shocks standard!

Cheers Tony, glade you enjoy my videos!! Nice easy job doing the rear shocks, but very satisfying, and makes the world of difference to the suspension on a Spitfire 👍

Great video and inspiring as always! I’m doing a full rebuild and got those exact same shocks, and I’m hoping to fit them next week, so perfect timing!

Looked a little chilly there Steve....putting some money into the old girl...those Spax shocks are not exactly cheap compared to the standard ones.....I’m running the same on the front of my 250.

I think Spax shocks are great, I know you pay more for them, but they did have them back in the 60's. Ok back then they most likely wasn't adjustable, but they we're about, so they are somewhat period accurate. And having them adjustable gives me the option to tighten up the suspension, or weaken it off to however I desire 👍

You could use a spare wheel instead of one of the road wheels under the car then if it does fall off the axle stands you won't damage the wheels that you went to the trouble to paint. Just a thought...

Blimey, that went smoothly Steve! Took me ages to get the top bolts off mine. Even the rubber bushes had welded themselves in place. Nice replacements though. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts on those but the car sits nicely so I'm sure you'll be pleased
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Cheers mate, I think it sits much better and drives far better with the spax on it over the standard shocks. I'm really pleased with the results. It's not going to end hear, the plan is to poly bush the suspension too 👍

Steve, would it have been possible to rotate the shocks 180 degrees, to make the adjuster easier to get at without removing the wheels?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
I thought about that when I fitted them, and thought yes the way you are saying makes sense for adjustment. However if a rock, stone or whatever fly's up and hits the little turn screw, it's exposed to it that way round, and would damage it. So just for my own peace of mind I put them with the turn screw facing the wheel 👍

Good Morning Meastro. First time l've seen the hardtop Steve , very handy for winter driving . As soon as you said you'd changed the rear spring the damage on the inner wheel arch lips made sense. I' d dab on a bit of etch primer and then underseal over that bare metal . But that underseal has really done it's job. You have to remind yourself this car is 54 years old ! Really hope you stay safe as this new strain is very worrying and l guess you're still having to work. And l can't understand the decision on priority , but what do we know ? Well take care and stay safe. 😊
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Hi John it wasn't me who changed the rear spring, it was done by the previous owner. I will be going over the car soon with underseal, However I don't want to go too mad on it as I'll be sending the car off at some point for new sills and floor pans 👍

@@SteveDentonClassics l''d love to do the work for you but we know it isn't possible . The sills don't look too bad to me but l'm sure you know otherwise! Cheers !

Got a pair of these to go on my Herald. Dumb question probably, but does it matter whether you fit them with the adjusters facing the backs of the wheels as Steve has, or facing in towards the middle of car, so they be adjusted from underneath without taking rear wheel off?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
It doesn't really make much odds which way round you fit them. I just do them with the adjusters facing the wheels, as to some degree it makes it less risk of being knocked off by say a stone of whatever maybe flying underneath the car at the time 👍

Great Job, will handle better then before...by the looks of it your chassis in urgent need of a treatment too, loosing a lot of metal by rust at back... Anyway, still on the roads... and better then before.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Cheers mate, and yes it's much better now than what it was. I'm not doing too much with the chassis until the body is restored, and hopefully this will be soon 👍

Loving the series mate! What are you going to do about the dreaded underseal?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Cheers Kevin, currently nothing as the car will be having new floor pans, sills and doors and varies other body repairs there no point covering it with underseal at the moment 👍
@kevelliott
@kevelliott 3 года назад
Ah ok. I actually meant how were you going to get rid of the old, where it's all over the chassis, wheel arches etc. And do you plan to use underseal again? I have opted to keep only the painted chassis surface and try to keep it clean and dry.
@SteveDentonClassics

The car will be repainted at some point, not red! So it's really a case of I'll cross that bridge when I come to it 👍

What’s your thoughts on replacing the rubber bushes with polyurethane ones?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
i think if you buy a good quality poly bush like SuperPro Bushes then they are great. I've fitted them to many cars, and it transforms the suspension. to a much more precised feel. The Spitfire in the video will have SuperPro Bushes fitted to it too in time 👍

You made that look very easy, I'm sure that I'd take swear words to the next level. Quick stupid question, are the fittings on the Spitfire imperial? Also if I can ask another question, what socket set are you using? Sorry for the questions
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Not at all, I use mostly Britool tools, and 95% of nuts and bolts on British built classic car pre 1982 will be Imperial. So you'll need AF sockets and spanners to work on them 👍

Nice video again, bet it took longer to set up the cameras than do the job itself! What worries me about adjustable shocks is there is a choice, I'd rather have less option and just be told what the best setting is 🤣.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
Cheers mate, its so true, a morning job turns into a days job when I film. As for the shockers, well Spax make them so on the softest setting they are the same as stock, then winding them up firms them up. I've always liked Spax as they we're available in the 1960's, so are some what period correct 👍

@@SteveDentonClassics I can well imagine how long it all takes to sort the video out, do you remember the comic strip presents series and one they did following a band called Bad News, and they are on a motorway going to a gig and they complain its taking so long because they have to keep dropping the camera man off and drive past and then wait to pick him up 🤣. Ah good so you can start at standard shocks and then dial it up a bit at a time, that's not so bad then.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 года назад
I don't remember it, but yes that's exactly it. It's not always the easiest of things being a one man presenter, director, editor, cameraman etc etc However when I read all the nice comments, it makes all the takes, re-takes, edits and time spent getting a video right to make it enjoyable for the viewer to watch worth while 👍
