Having had a bit of a clunk from the back of the #SpitfireProject for a while now, I’ve decide to do something about it, and replace the radius arm bushes. But then I thought, why not upgrade to something much better and put done adjustable radius arms on the back as well as upgraded poly bushes, one thing leads to another, and I got new brackets as well. Well, it’s time to get them fitted to the car. Hopefully it should make set up that much easier

These are a great idea, not having to shim the brackets out to fit. I’ve watched quite a few of your videos whilst rebuilding my 1500, and they are the best and most informative; you never miss a step. Thanks.

Once adjusted at the 4 wheel alignment shop, it's a good idea to wrap the threaded sections in masking tape, before coating them in black enamel, this will protect the threads agsinst corrosion

Mark Field aka Jigsaw Racing aka Lemans R on e-bay is great! Extremely knowledgeable and easy to deal with!

I've known Mark Field for a very long time. What he doesn't know about small chassis Triumph's isn't worth knowing 👍

I've also known Mark since before Jigsaw Racing days, indeed he was still a butcher back then!

That's a nice upgrade. My first choice of poly bushes is Superflex. I rebushed the Dolomite's front suspension in Superflex many moons ago. I've already started the next Dolomite video so it will eventually appear on my channel.

Oh great stuff, the difference a decent quality polyurethane bush from from a quality supplier such as Polybush or SuperPro make to a car is night and day 👍

Great video, and good to see you back. I didn't realise the setup on a spitfire, but looks a good move to change to adjustable 👍

Nice addition Steve, I see my Spitfire must have been modified to be more awkward. The front bracket is attached with fixed nuts in the cabin and bolts through fron the arm side. A complete pain
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
It's a good modification to have, just got to look on the bright side, once you get the nuts and bolts right, you have an upgrade that hasn't cost you anything 👍

Another very helpful instructional video, thanks! 👍 Would you consider doing one on rust proofing the underside, your Spitfire looks like my Herald, plenty of surface rust underneath, but nothing serious hopefully. I’m thinking of spraying it with a lanolin based wax.
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
In all honestly no, there's not much point in rust proofing my Spitfire as most of the underside panels are going to be replaced when I come to restore it. If I adding waxoil or underseal to the car now, it comes with fire risk problems when cutting out old panels and welding in new ones, so for now it'll remain as it it, however as soon as the new panels are welded in then it'll have rust proofing 👍

@@SteveDentonClassics Thanks, good to hear you have plans for the body work too. Superficially it doesn’t look too bad on video. Look forward to seeing what’s to come!

hi Steve! its look nice! Didn't the nuts do a loosen with time and vibrations?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
In all honesty its no different to modern cars like BMW's that use the same mention to adjust the toe. If they are done up tight, they should never come loose 👍

Are those adjustable radius arms made of mild steel, or are they stainless? Because if left unpainted, they will rust very quickly
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 9 месяцев назад
Since the video they have had a few layers of paint applied to them 👍

Hi Steve. .....simples !!! It's a no brainer , so you'd assume this has been around for a long time ? Cost is the answer as to why Triumph didn' t do this . And the same principle is used to adjust the bonnets . I get the impression you enjoy the Spitfire every bit as much as the 6 ......heard anything from Harriet ? " And for your final question !" Do you know if the guy you bought the Spitfire from watches you ? Cheers bud !
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
It's like anything, I'm sure if Triumph's budget was unlimited then the Spitfire would coil springs and shockers on the back instead of a leaf spring. But then you have to build to a market to sell to and for what it is they did a good job. We just have some great improvements to choose form nowadays 👍

Probably unrelated, I am looking at a Mk1. I've heard that the rear suspension can be improved by changing it to GT6 rotoflex ones or Mk4 "swing spring" ones. I wondered which is the better solution?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics Год назад
In general, the best proven upgrade for the round tailed Spitfire is a swing spring set up from a Spitfire 1500. It does widen the rear track, so be aware of this. A GT6 rotoflex conversion would be expensive and require accurate welding for mounting brackets, where as the Spitfire 1500 swing spring is just a bolt on modification 👍
@wckoek
@wckoek Год назад
@@SteveDentonClassics I have read that Rotoflex is the best in terms of handling, but Canley no longer carries the kit, not sure of others and like you said it is expensive and more involved, I guess for my use the swing spring is a better solution.

Nice little upgrade… did the shiny new mounting bolts come with the arms or bushes ? Metric or Imperial ? :-)
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
Afraid not, I had to buy the bolts separately from David Manners Group, and they are the correct Imperial bolts 👍
@jonziggy
@jonziggy 2 года назад
They look a really good addition to the car, but why not clean up and paint the underside area they mount on at the same time?
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 2 года назад
Cheers John, but at the moment there is little point painting and cleaning up anywhere underneath when the whole car is going to be striped down to the bare bones to have new sills and floor panels welded in. Once that happens I'll do a proper job of it 👍
