Hey gang! I said it before, but the reason I’m covering this show so much is because I know a lot of the debate surrounding it is mostly toxic racist/misogynist doofuses, so I want to have a voice out there discussing the good and bad about the series in a less gross way. I have concerns. I have things I don’t like about the show already. But there are also things about Velma that I do think are cool and interesting decisions! Hopefully that all comes across in my videos. I’m just a dork who likes Scooby and wants to talk about Scoob stuff online in a hopefully fun and thoughtful way! 💜

It's sad really, Mindi does a good Velma voice, but from her interviews it sounds like it's going to be a self-insert dressed as Velma. The trailer makes me dread that instead of compelling story the writing is focused around insulting the fans and backlash they knew was going to happen like she-hulk did. It feels like a lot of these recent changes to are done to cause backlash and stir up free press.

This isn’t the case, because HBO would not let them use Scooby Doo. This means they had to pitch this show themselves. Mindy had a fun idea with a garbage execution.

Yeah I typically hate the people who complain that no changes should ever be made to a franchise, but this show just seems so different from past scooby doo shows, that it really seems like they should have just made a new series. From what we know so far they 1) gave the show a more adult tone, 2) set it before they became a team, 3) removed scooby doo, 4) race swapped 3/4 of the cast, 5) have potentially given the show one overarching mystery instead of villains of the week, and 6) have potentially killed off Velma. I feel some of those changes by themselves would have been fine for a new scooby doo series, but at this point the only thing recognizable about this show is the names and outfits of the characters.

@@bluesnake4626 The fun part is one can argue a different WB (well adult swim, but the point stands) show had that exact idea as the premise but then also had fully unique characters that played off of that while maintaining a general Scooby-Doo vibe right down to the art style evoking classical Hanna Barbara cartoons which was Mike Tyson mysteries, they even managed to have a talking animal while still being a bloody, dark series with real deaths and real monsters, and that worked out as a good show so I'm having hope.

My one issue with the "Not wanting to bring Scooby to an adult level." Is WB allowed it for an entire Supernatural cross over with full on swearing, blood and gore. So Scooby has already been brought there in an animation style VERY identical to classic Scooby.

Funny enough, I'm pretty sure that bumper *predates* Matthew Lillard being cast as Shaggy. CN used to be surprisingly meta with their advertising back in the day, it wasn't uncommon to see them make bumpers like that parodying popular movies or TV shows. Heck just yesterday I watched a twenty minute movie cobbled together from different bumpers where they had the gang parody the Blair Witch Project for a day long Scooby marathon. Scream came out a full five years before the live action Scooby Doo, so this is less a reference to the casting as it is one seriously amazing coincidence.

@@juls7403 well, the original Scream came out back in 1996, so if that bumper really is from 2001 then they would've already announced the cast for the Scooby movie long before then. So you might still be right, that could be a double Easter egg since Scream would've still been thriving in reruns back then (not including the original sequels since his character was killed off in the first one)

I don’t think Velma’s sexuality from that canon is related to this canon. If we are talking about the grand brand version of her that is supposed to be the general public’s consensus of her she should be bi, but in specific canons she could be strictly straight, gay, bi, or whatever.

Yeah, people have this weird view of Velma (and other characters) where there is one definitive version of them across all media when there really isn't. There are sharply different continuities that are completely separate from each other. Velma can be gay in one, bi in another, and straight in another still. All 3 can exist in separate continuities and all are equally valid in their separations. I mean this show has an Indian Velma, that's incompatible with a the White Velma we see in other continuities. It's the same thing with her sexuality, these are clearly separate Velmas.

I think they might make scooby a human character. That's why they spelled it "Scoobi" with an i. Hence the question "WHAT is Scoobi? Is he a dog? A human? A ghost? An imaginary friend? Who knows but I feel like he is going to be in the show in some way.

Mindy acts in American films, we should not be considering what some guy in Bollywood would does when Mindy has never been in a Bollywood movie. Like if M Night Shamalan made a movie, I could totally see him give cast Mindy and give her a white boyfriend if he wanted to. He's a male Indian, he counts. Not to mention that Bollywood is a big place, not everyone is against female leads having white love interests. Also, the implications of your last sentence are a bit suspect. We were only talking about Mindy having a white boyfriend. What does that have to do with Mindy being an ideal love interest? It's almost as if you are saying that to be an ideal love interest, you have to be the object of affection of a white male.

You don't make a Pokemon show that doesn't feature any Pokemon. You don't make a Simpsons spinoff that focuses only on the Flanders. They could have easily made a mystery show with four characters that wasn't based on Scooby characters. They just wanted the IP attachment because IP is king these days and a show is more likely to get greenlit if it's based on a pre-established franchise. It's perfectly reasonable for people to have doubts about the next iteration of the Scooby Doo franchise when it doesn't feature the most popular and well-liked character that the series is named after

The animation in this trailer looks infinitely better than the screenshot we got initially, so I'm less concerned. I just hope it isn't, y'know... Just another adult animated comedy that makes the same jokes all the time. The style change is a great step in that direction, at the very least. Velma's updated design looks great.

Don’t think of Velma crushing on Fred as course correcting; they’re just different timelines. In one line she likes girls, one she likes guys, one she lives for the mystery of the week, one she’s a little kid, one she has dark skin, one she’s a lone survivor in a zombie apocalypse. Scooby is in a same league as TMNT, Transformers, He-Man, and Looney Tunes. There's multiple shows and these shows are in their own timeline. Heck, there's like 4 different Scooby gang origin stories that conflict whether they met as kids or as freshman high schoolers. Unless stated otherwise, every show is independent of one another that doesn't connect with each other

Honestly, it just seems like poor timing that neither this show nor the Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo movie could've accounted for. In _Velma,_ she's attracted to men. In Trick of Treat Scooby-Doo, she's a lesbian. In Mystery Incorporated, she's a lesbian. Like you said, different iterations where they're basically different characters. It only feels like "course-correcting" if you try to lump in every single iteration into a single canon, which would fall apart before you even get to the more modern Scooby Doo series imo.

12:50 Tbf, the question wasn't "Where is Scoobi?" but "What is Scoobi?". I'm thinking it's maybe a "Bojack Kills" sort of thing from Bojack Horseman, where the name of a character was used for the name of a thing, in Bojack's case heroin. Maybe "Scoobi" is some drug that's going around the town or some conspiracy or master plan that'll guide the overarching plot.

Velma has always been gay. She was confirmed to be lesbian by the show creators and writers but due to the first series surrounding just a bunch of goofballs solving mysteries it was never implemented until Mystery Incorporated where she is kind of shown to be gay due to her on and off relationship with another girl.

But I think you have to do it with more subtly. Here, it just ends up making Velma sound as annoying as the people complaining about her. Which doesn’t really help. They probably could have switched Velma with a random side character in the trailer. That way, Velma isn’t the one being annoying.

Yeah I'm mostly concerned about just how much the creators care about the source material more than anything. That teaser released wasn't a great introduction and the interviews certainly haven't helped. I actually hadn't heard about WB not letting them use Scooby as the only thing getting pushed is how they couldn't figure out how to make him mature which doesn't look great for them.

First I want to thank you Scott, you wonderful nerd! Thank you for talking about Scooby-Doo! We’re such a weird niche as fans and this is my favorite fandom! I definitely will give this show a chance when it comes out and hopefully it surprises me(much like Harley Quinn); but I do have some reservations after reading leaked character descriptions (in addition to the general feeling that Mindy doesn’t really care about Scooby-Doo). I just hope the animation is clean and there’s a great story that just adds to the wealth of Scooby stuff!

I feel like it is a bit odd to have a announcment that Velma is gay but then have her with a crush on Fredd in this one...but then again wasn't the Gay version the one where she dated Shaggy? because that universe is great...but it did feel like more a alternate version of the team than something thats attached to the original version....o just saw the video of her crushing on the girl with glasses.....maybe it'll be like Shaggy and his being a vegaterian..sometimes he is...sometimes he's not. sometimes she's gay...sometimes she's not. I do think the crush on Fred is a bit odd....but it IS kindof interesting. with that note and a picture of her being friends with daphne with her eyes crossed out....my bet is the fall out was due to the crush on fred...or most likelythe fact that Fred likes daphne.... as a majority of the franchise has fredd and Daphne have a boyfriend girlfriend not labeled but we have a understanding type relationship. even more so wea all know usually fred goes off with daphne...but ofte also velma to. it could be interesting it it turned out velma could have crushes on bothe daphne and fred its a bit of a misdirect....or at least explore a interssting what if velma liked fred to which could cause tention in a freindship and maybe seeing them come back together. Given what happened, what she did was actually fairly generous, and actually in keeping with signaling Velma as a nerdy type.

Honestly I agree with the second half of your statement but your first is the one I tend to disagree with especially on this channel. As many have said this new adaptation of Scooby Doo isn't one of the shows that want to embrace diversity but instead prefers to use that shield to make money from it. Velma being lesbian is completely fine as it had been embraced in the beginning of the franchise but completely changing the race of the other characters while trying to say they're "Shaggy, Daphne, and Fred" is definitely not the route to go. They also have several racist undertones regarding Shaggy being a stoner, and Fred especially having the low end of the stick by being described as an "average white boy who steals ideas, is incredibly pathetic, and has not gone threw puberty". Daphne also is immediately thrown into the abyss because the writers felt that she was nothing even though most of her appearances had her being a powerful person and an amazing member of the team, this results in her being put in the screenshots nude even though she was classified as being a minor.

The art design is looking a bit like NFTs. I don't mind the varied ethnicity, but that neon and very simple layout of the characters look sort of like non-art next to the rest of the cartoon. The velma voice is a little odd, but I could adjust to that, if she still acts smart and velma-y

I do think they'll probz make her bi longterm though. Sexuality stuff aside bisexuality is kinda better for protags from a writing perspective just cause it means you can write romance and love triangles with more characters.

it bugs me that this trailer is as controversial as it is. This trailer doesn't seem all that different from the initial Harley Quinn trailer which was also weird and meta, while the show proper has pretty different sense of humor. I'm interested in what this series will do, I think Scooby-Doo is a franchise that is so malleable that you can really do anything, like team up with Sonny & Cher or have the gang fight an eldritch monster.

I have such mixed feelings on this show as a long time Scooby-Doo fan. I like the art style and the animation and Mindy Kaling sounds great as Velma so far. An adult Scooby-Doo show is something I(and I know many others) have wanted for a while and going this very Scream inspired direction seems like a perfect fit. That said... Their excuse for not having Scooby makes no sense to me and is very concerning. Scooby can, and has, worked in more adult takes before. Scoobynatural, Apocalypse and Mystery Incorporated has shown that. Even if this show goes really gory or raunchy, I do not buy that Scooby couldn't work. But specifically what concerns me is them saying that Scooby is what makes the show a kids show. And that makes no sense because talking animals have existed in adult animation before Scooby-Doo even existed. It feels like a tremendously bad sign when the people behind an adult Scooby-Doo say that they don't know how to make the character work in an adult show. That really feeds into my biggest fear right now which is that the people behind the show(mainly writers and directors) aren't super knowledgeable about Scooby-Doo and they might feel the need to try and distance itself from the franchise at large. Shaggy being referred to only as Norville so far just reinforces this concern to me. That said, the Crystal Cove easter egg and the fact that Frank Welker is playing Fred's dad might point towards the opposite so we will have to see when the show premiers. I just have mixed feelings on the trailer and the show as a whole. It really feels like it could go either way in terms of quality.

Heck, when VB did an adult take on the gang: only shaggy could hear him talk, and it was just him being insane. That also wouldn't be out of place. I honestly don't know about this show after these 1st 2 episodes. It seems the only thing that has carried over from the source material is that shaggy has an unrequited crush on Velma. I am interested by the serial killer plot. I do want to know, but the way the writing has been so far... I can't see the resolution being very rewarding. In fact, I do believe that's what they're going for anyways. It will be some dumb unearned throwaway joke. All of the clues will be explained explained away through cringe humor. Like I didn't tell anyone... or I did that... insert reason for embarrassment .... that's why I ... etc. Example, "The bloody rag isn't from the killer. The bloody rag is from when Daphne ran out of tampons, because her 2 moms are both going menopause." "And I was too embarrassed to tell anyone that we're actually poor." Also, why is the child with two moms; the drug dealer. Why. I swear either elitists are dumb, and don't know how to convey a positive message about their causes, or they're just... in all reality... extremely elitist. Which is too say, anyone isn't exactly like me is lesser. Like sure many of these elitist writers support the general ideas of feminism, and rights for LGTBQ community. Supporting rights, doesn't mean they agree with, or even actually support the lifestyle. They just support the idea that 2 consenting adults can do whatever the want. So it ends up a backhanded compliment. We have the 2 loving moms, but even with both of them having really good jobs: they can't afford to raise 1 F-ing child. Oh and they abandon their detective work, because they get distracted by a baby. I'm not crazy right. That's pretty GD sexist.
