I know I learned an awful lot from selling my first home. We had a home stager come through. She suggested a few simple changes. We only spent a few hundred dollars, but it made a huge difference. Ever since, I have made sure that any house we live in is kept up to date. With furniture that is right for the space. We enjoy living in it and we know that if there is an emergency and we have to sell there won’t be an overwhelming amount of stuff to do.

Sandra WestleyUK, I’ve just sold my home, and in December 2021 and into new year 2022 when we had decided to sell, I got the decorator in and painted all walls and papered some wall with neutral but attractive colours, also put in a new shower in the en-suite new floor coverings in both bathrooms, cost about £2500 max. We were advised the price to put it on the market and we had 7 viewers over Easter and by Easter Tuesday we had 3 offers one £10.000 over asking one £25.000 over asking and one £40.000 over asking price, and this last one had almost completed there own sale. So the money spent painting and making it attractive was worth every penny.

When the owner said it smelled better she was lying. I have NEVER met a smoker who could smell their own car or home. They don't have a clue how badly their smoking stinks a place up!

I’m a smoker (I smoke outside) and I hate the smell!! I know, so stupid and ironic! But not all smokers are oblivious to the awful smell!!

Matthias prices Seaford just rent the thing out it's not a terrible lot of money and does rent in the city where a job is unless the house is a prices in the city of the same price I'm sure there's a lot more other Canadian places are a lot more

Many smokers go outside of their own houses now to smoke. My mother finally did, because she knew my sisters and I hated the smell. She lived alone, and somehow her houses never reeked as so many do. Maybe because she was exceptionally clean and opened the windows frequently to air out. Her car wasn’t bad because she immediately emptied the ashtray after smoking. She quit when she was 83 and resumed it secretly in her 90’s when she knew she wasn’t going to live much longer. I only smelled it once, then.

They should also spruce up the tiny front yard and the back yard with some mulch and a few flowers for pops of color, very inexpensive and it looks very nice!

My sister in law had a cat she loved very much. She used to vacuum her cat with a small shop vac everyday. He loved it, and there was no hair anywhere.

@@safepethaven The truth is that it takes a lot of work to keep a house clean. If she is gone all day and has no hired help and a bunch of animals, it will get dirty fast. People underestimate how much work it actually is.

I have had cats my entire life and I have never had cat hair on my walls or the fan. I understand she works full time, but she can hire a cleaning person to come in once a week.

My pets are my world as well. But, I vacuum daily, and brush out my animals weekly. Not to mention dust and spring and fall cleaning. There was YEARS of cobwebby dust in that house. Plus they smoke.

I have a friend who always has cats and dogs and when we first met and I walked into her home I had NO idea she had a single animal! She kept her house very clean and it always melted fresh. She worked full time and had 2 kids. It is hard, but it can be done. Even animals don't like living in filth. Glad you talk that time too..it isn't easy, but its best ❤

Smoke leaves a residue, should wash walls before painting, but recognize this is a three day get house ready for sale. Pets will be reunited once house sells.

I think the after is a huge improvement over the before. The sofa is no longer blocking part of the entry to the livingroom and carrying the floor all the way through is beautiful.

This was filmed back in 2008-2009. The city this house is in (Oshawa, Ontario) is on the outskirts of the Greater Toronto Area, and up until recently was one of the cheaper suburbs of the city. Housing prices have blown up throughout the GTA though, you would never ever get this for $159,000 anymore. This would probably go for 6-7 hundred thousand today. Closer to the city you would be pushing a million even though it’s a townhouse. Detached house minimum of 1.2-1.3 million. For comparison, a 500-600 sq foot one bedroom condo in Toronto today goes for a minimum of 550-600k.

KILZ kills the odors when used as base coat under primer, for a smokers home. They don't know the odors they leave behind. I feel for any small dog left alone for almost 14 hours a day, then have owner sleep and start again. This is where a dog walker comes in.

She said she works but they might take them to a day care or have a Dog walker, she might work down the road and come back to let them toilet or the other home owner might work from home or work part time But yes, its not really fair for a Dog to be alone for that long

An office, whether at work or at home, should be arranged so that you can see who comes in the door. I couldn't be comfortable or effective facing outside. The smell of smoke doesn't go away with a coat of paint. It comes back when the paint smell dissipates. One whiff of smoke and I'm out.

I have successfully sold 2 houses with dogs and cats living in them. It takes a lot of work, but smell and hair can be controlled. I have been told they wouldn’t have known the animals were there were they not seen.

@@candy11401 my animals were housebroken. The dogs went to the bathroom outside and I cleaned the litter box. I don’t like housework but kept the houses immaculate when on the market. I also staged them. It wasn’t easy but it works. I now live in a one bedroom apartment for moderate income seniors. We are inspected at least once a year. I had a lab pit mix and 2 cats until one cat died and was told by people inspecting they wouldn’t have known I had animals had they not seen them. Cleaning carpets regularly and bathing the dog, along with keeping the litter box clean works.

It drives me crazy that so much work goes into walls [remove wallpaper, wall repair, new paint] and the first thing they do to the beautiful new wall is hammer nails into the wall to hang something up. Please, please, please, use COMMAND PRODUCTS to hang what you want without putting holes in the walls! What if the new owner doesn't want something hung in the same place? Now they are looking at unnecessary holes in the wall. PLEASE DON'T PUT HOLES IN THE WALLS!

This does NOT work. You have to take up the subfloor to get the pee stain out, and painting does not get rid of the smoke smell. As soon as the "new paint" smell is gone, the smoke smell comes right back. That is because smoke is a VAPOR and permeates all the cracks and voids behind walls. I'm telling you this from experience. Also, windows will be covered with a nicotine film and so will any lightbulbs and light fixtures. I bought this house 16 years ago and on damp or hot days you can STILL smell smoke. The staging is good in this house, but the smoke was not abated.

Paint over smoked walls doesn't work. There is industrial cleanser that will destroy the odor by permanently removing it.

I hope Yvonne didn't bring the pets back after someone put that under contract, and before moving completely out!! This alerts me to write into any real estate purchase contracts I write that no animals, nor habits like cigarettes, can be brought onto the premises before they move out. If that's actually a bridge too far, I don't contract w that party. Sofie ethically should have made that crystal clear to Yvonne. From now on, I'll be asking any seller I buy from, exactly what history of tobacco, weed, and animals on the property actually is, subject to specific financial remedies if breached. That woman's husband's eyes swell shut when near any cat dander, my grandson's do as well, his lungs + bronchia swell + are inflamed, his breathing compromised. This is what is so irresponsible + dangerous about people bringing their pets into stores w them. Every furry animal has dander -- deadly for more & more people w allergies.

Lol, some of these comments! This house is by no means a pigsty. It’s dirty, yes and simply not clean enough for market but I wouldn’t categorize this as a shambles or anything. The truth is that when you want to sell a huge asset like a house you have to BUST ASS to clean it and prepare it if you want a good price.

oh my god I cant imagine the smell in this house. those stains on the plywood under the carpet says it all. Cat urine stench is impossible to clean up. Cat hair was the very least of this houses problems

I agree. Dealing with previous owners pet problems. Having new hardwood floors installed presently. There was new carpet when I moved in, we just tore it out and the odors were horrendous. It was subtle odor in spring when the furnace and air weren't running. Now I have to fix the issues. Uuuhhhggg!

@@amanda1500 omg I am so sorry that sucks so bad!! That's what is so disappointing about this episode, it just goes for the quick fix and hides the problem for the poor buyer to find out. It's a terrible example to set for other people to follow. If you were doing the right thing you would do the job right. No one should have this kind of nasty surprise buying a new home.

Arm and Hammer pet deodorizer Spray. Though my cats are really good about not peeing outside the box, there was a spot in the closet near my bed that really bothered me. I bought the Spray from Amazon, and I sprayed it thoroughly and let it completely dry maybe four times, plus absorbing as much as possible with a clean towel the first few times. Absolutely totally gone within less than a week. On carpet, too. Really amazed me.

What annoys me about every episode is the real estate agents have already told the sellers what to do and sellers refuse to budge. Why does it take tv show to get sellers off their butt? These idiots will likely continue to smoke indoors and stall their house selling.

Thought was watching Kennel Hunters or a remake of the Glass Menagerie and surprised this woman could speak because looked like she was going to hack up a fur ball any second. Why do people need to be told they're living in a shithole? Dogs, cats, lizards, she's going to need to buy an ark and guaranteed as soon as she moves in wherever it is that the place will look like this one used to look in about five minutes. Would have paid to see the cats fight the lizard thought and glad to see Sonny Bono still alive.

I get the removing of Animal hair and moving the crickets elsewhere but Animals are family, they don't say to get rid of the kids If I was looking for a new house I wouldn't care if they have Animals or not, of course having the house clean and not with hair everywhere would be good but the Animals themselves are exciting to see but if a kid was there that would put me off especially if the kid was loud or getting in the way or if the house owner was carrying the kid as they was showing us, I would feel uncomfortable, I don't care if they have a kids room but I would like to see a house thats clean with kids out of the way and with or without Animals

A relative was a real estate agent in TO ~ pet smell makes it almost impossible to sell a property. The pets were not destroyed ~ just removed until the sale.

Well, it's pretty stressfull for the pets to be with so many strangers that comes to viewings. When we were selling our apartment first we did was to move our cats to safe place. Then we can make all we need - and it wasn't very quiet, so better for sensitive cats' ears thay they were away for a while. That said I also think that cat home that smells cat from the door means that someone does not clean litterboxes frequently... so poor animals
